BREAKING: The Dario Argento 1977 horror thriller Suspiria has been set for a remake that will be directed by Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green from a script he wrote with Chris Gebert. The search is on for Suzie, the young protagonist who travels to Europe to attend a world renowned school. After a series of brutal murders, the young American student learns that the academy is a front for something way more sinister than education. The original had a surreal, psychedelic tone that involved the supernatural, witches and a whole lotta blood.
The remake is backed by Crime Scene Pictures, whose partners Adam Ripp and Rob Paris are joining forces with producers Francesco Melzi d’Eril (Hotel Rwanda) from Memo Films and Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) under his First Sun film banner to produce and finance the remake. Rizal Risjad, Silvia Fendi and Philip Elway will executive produce and Lisa Muskat will co-produce. Wild Bunchwill sell foreign at Cannes in May and CAA will make the domestic distribution deal. Production begins in September.
“We love the style and energy of the original film – and David’s script brilliantly updates the world, presenting a rare opportunity to create an elegant, classic horror film,” Crime Scene partners Ripp and Paris said in a statement. They are in preproduction on the Joe Lynch-directed Kate Hudson-starrer Everly. Crime Scene is in post production on Gambit, the remake scripted by the Coen Brothers, with Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci starring. Mike Lobell produced and CBS Films releases this fall.

BAD IDEA! The original is a masterpiece! Its like someone remaking the Sistine Ceiling. It can only be a bad pastiche.
oh, for christs sake, enough with the re-makes already! When I read this, my heart just sank. The original is so central to my movie going memories that the thought of this just sickens me.
Yawn. Susperia is a classic horror title and my level of confidence that Green will do anything interesting with it is exactly zero. If Eli Roth were doing it, this would be a remake worth getting excited about. Pass.

Get your agent on the phone, Jessica Barden.
David Gordon remaking Dario Argento? Excuse me while I laugh like Seth Rogan.
Why stop there?
Casablanca – Channing Tatum, Kristin Stewart and Taylor Kitsch
Gone With the Wind – George Clooney, Charlize Theron, Leonardo Dicaprio and Gabourey Sidibe
Easy Rider – Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Will Smith
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – Seth Rogen and Angelina Jolie as Nurse Ratched
Come on, Hollywood, what are you waiting for? There are plenty of potential remakes still to explore.
i like David Gordon Green, but Suspiria is incredible and shouldn’t be ruined by shitting on its legacy… it’s not the story that was so horrifying and beautiful, but the style… the creepy, re-voiced acting, the casting, the incredible 3-strip Technicolor cinematography, etc. there’s no way to top it.
I’m not surprised, nor should any fan of Suspiria be. They have been trying to get this project going for years (I think Natalie Portman was attached at one point even). This is the first news of it actually moving anywhere though. I just hope they do the film justice and keep it very dark and sinister, and cast skilled actors over popular ones. But hey, we’ll always have the original to fall back on.
Has anyone seen Catechism Cataclysm? Gordon Green produced it and it turned out awesome! Steve Little’s da man! Green will pull Suspiria off… he’ll pull it off.
Agreed. Yet another classic that will die a horrible, blood splattered death as a remake . . .
Does the studio understand this one of the films in Argento’s “Three Sisters” trilogy?
Without the Goblin soundtrack, the remake will just stink.
Your Highness, The Sitter, Suspiria – when is DGG going to get back to making the kinds of films that made him a future-great-auteur? They don’t all have to be “George Washington” or “All the Real Girls”, but when you are capable of making films of that caliber it seems a shame to abandon thoughtful storytelling.
Watched “The Sitter” recently…what a terrible film. Cudos for getting everything short of a postcard produced, but what’s the point if they’re no longer entertaining. With the anonymity he enjoys, earned through several beautiful films, it feels squandered the way he throws these things together.
Add my name to the growing list of those who think original masterpieces should be left well alone.
I think this is such a bizarre choice, and I’m excited.
Read this script in 2008 — what a pretentious train wreck it was then. Can’t believe it’s in any better shape now.
This will do about as well as the “reboot” of The Thing. Which was a much higher profile film but seeking the same audience. The Hollywood brain trust strikes again!
Good idea, horrible choices
Read this script when it was at Searchlight. It was really good – and DG Green co-wrote it. He has a real chance to get back to his roots with this one if they cast it right. Color me optimistic.
The original was brilliant and they’ve put together a great team for a new interpretation… it’ll be interesting to see how casting/production develops
This is TERRIBLE. Suspiria does NOT need to be re-made! Any attempt is going to become a gigantic clusterf**k.
what the problems with this people ? it’s a stupid idea . please stop this madness !
