EXCLUSIVE: Not every viable Marvel Comics hero is in The Avengers. 20th Century Fox is revving a reboot of Daredevil, and the studio is setting David James Kelly to rewrite of the script, for David Slade to direct. The 30 Days of Night and Twilight Saga: Eclipse helmer became attached last year, and reports have the studio working off the Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli story arc Born Again, as The Kingpin uncovers the superhero’s secret identity, and uses it to turn blind lawyer Matt Murdoch’s life upside down. Fox, which also has the X-Men franchise and its spinoffs, also has Chronicle helmer Josh Trank working on a reboot of Fantastic Four. Kelly is repped by WME.

Another reboot just to keep rights from reverting to Marvel.
So now thats: Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Wolverine, X-Men and Daredevil. Lame.
What was “lame” about X-MEN FIRST CLASS?
I don’t blame Sony either for doing anything and everything to keep Spider-Man under their control. I don’t like the reboot angle — why not just keep turning out sequels, it worked for the Bond franchise for decades — but these studios paid for the rights and I’d do the exact same thing if I were them.
The bigger issue to me is how the studios plan on maintaining the middling Daredevil and Ghost Rider franchises.
What was wrong with X Babies you ask? Everything it was an awful movie that only hard core losers funny book fan boi nerds trumpet as good.
“X Babies” was poor because it was for losers and nerds? Was it too action packed for you? The storyline too hard to follow? Or is it because you get a hard on for the old Magneto and are jealous of the young one?
X-Men didn’t get rebooted, it got a prequel.
Uh, yes it did. It clashes with the cronology of the first movie.
Remake after remake bothers me too, but…
Let’s face it, the DAREDEVIL they made was about as bad as movie making gets. I don’t blame anyone for saying, “We can do a much BETTER version of DAREDEVIL.”
I completely disagree. I loved Daredevil.
I thought it was good too. The visuals of sonic vibrations were pretty cool and the action was pretty good. I’ve seen a lot worst from superhero movies.
Disney is obviously going to have to buy the film rights for these properties. Sony and Fox won’t let them go.
Sony will never give up the Spider-Man property. Disney will have to pay billions for it.
Who is David James Kelly and what else has he written? I just googled him and nothing really came up.
Had a script on the Black List. Has done some rewrite work around town.
Sounds great to me — the first movie was a complete dud. The Born Again arc is great — but i wonder how they’ll deal with Capt America’s role in the story? Maybe they’ll replace with a X-man?
When has a blind person ever been shown accurately on screen? Blind just does not work. Its a visual medium!
I can hardly wait to get another Daredevil movie out there for us comic book fans. (Which, by the way, is a visual medium also, but the blind lawyer Matt Murdock has been fighting crime since 1964 in the Daredevil comics.)
Victoria, you’ve obviously not watched Covert Affairs, with its blind character Auggie Anderson, nor do you personally know any blind people. Why you would say “blind just doesn’t work” is beyond me. You should check out The Blind Film Critic, Tommy Edison, then check your preconceived notions at the door.
Daredevil killed the superhero genre last time (tho the Elektra spin-off banged the final nail). Daredevil’s just gay. Unfortunately, the industry is dumb enough to equate a bomb Daredevil film with the reason to cancel, say another Captain America film, so let’s hope DD never sees the light of day.
Don Murphy is that you?
How did Daredevil kill the superhero genre? Freaking hardly. Same year saw the release of X-Men 2. 2004 had Spider-Man 2. And two years after Daredevil we saw the first of Chris Nolan’s X-Men film your homophobia and blatant mistakes not withstanding.
All that said, I’m skeptical any of these movies will actually get made. Fox has been talking about these “reboots” for years. They are literally dragging their feet.
Daredevil wasn’t a bomb, it just wasn’t very good. It grossed over $100 million. It was based on a comic book hero that no one outside of comic book fans had ever heard of. Grossing $100 million is pretty good in that respect. The cast was all wrong, with the possible exceptions of Colin Farrell, Jon Favreau and Stan Lee as the man saved from being hit by oncoming traffic. Guy Pearce would have made a much better Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Almost anyone that looked remotely Greek would have made a better Elektra than WASPy-looking Jennifer Garner. In fact, it was too soon to deal with Elektra at all. Karen Page should have had a prominent role. Also, the movie was too damn dark. That may have been fine for a sequel, but not for the first in a series. Okay. Sorry. I’m rambling. Hopefully though, the people working on the next Daredevil movie will pay attention.
Couldn’t agree with you more Duke.
Ill admit right off the bat that I am a huge hornhead. i was very disappointed with the first film (for many of the reasons that Duke already said).
My issue is this, if they are going back to do a completely new (Q%&_(&%Q script isn’t that still technically “in development”??? I thought the option was that they had to be in production by X time or it reverts back?!?!?!
My concern really is that Spidey, Daredevil, the FF, and the X-men need to go back into the house of marvel ASAP. Feige already made a few comments about possibly doing a “Civil War” storyline in a future avengers film. That can’t happen without the characters back in (Spider-man, DD (sort of), The FF and Wolverine are all huge factors of that story line).
Maybe this is the reason why there hasn’t been any updates to “aka jessica jones” tv show. DD plays heavily into Jessica’s mythos.
sigh.
Just give up Fox.
I hope they utilize Elektra in this one and cast Stana Katic.
I hope this planned reboot of Daredevil fails (as I do for the reboots The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man) if only because it increases the likelihood that the rights will revert back to Marvel.
The last Ghost Rider film was pretty bad, though I think that it made much more money that it deserved to.
Spider-Man, which has made millions at the box office, is perhaps a special case in that I doubt Sony will let it go easily, but if it flops, they may not have much say in the matter.
Marvel Historian, Christopher Nolan hasn’t made an X-MEN film. That would be Batman you’re thinking of.
Also, Fox are not LITERALLY dragging their feet. Figuratively, maybe.
Oh message board comments, how you make me face palm.
It’s been 9 years since Daredevil. They are dragging their feet. They are not serious about making this movie. These movies aren’t coming out in 2013 or 2014. They just aren’t happening.
As for NYCS:
“DAREDEVIL killed the superhero genre last time.”
Really?
I’m not sure what universe you’re living in, but in this one DAREDEVIL wasn’t a financial failure and was released towards the start of a superhero BOOM that has only escalated in the years since the film’s release. If anything, MORE superhero films were made after DAREDEVIL than before.
Have you seen the figures for THE AVENGERS this weekend?
Marvel aren’t going to stop making billions of dollars because a Fox film MIGHT not do as well as one of their properties.
People, THINK before you start spewing nonsense!
No worries. Flash in the pan
Praise the Lord that a reboot is coming. The first one was dogcrap – an insult to anyone who loves the comic. I remember hearing about Affleck being cast as Murdock and saying, “huh?” No Guy Pearce? Hell, Matt Damon would have been a superior choice. Add to the the asinine suit, storyline that careened from pillar to post without any sense of what makes the IP special…horrible. Jennifer Garner (a decent actress) as Elektra was the final straw.
Once again they’re trying to spin a second-tier Marvel character into B.O. gold.
I’m all for a reboot if they do it right. The last DD flick had AWFUL art direction, and like dukeroberts above, I didn’t like the WASPy Elektra (Jordana Brewster would have been way better).
Simon Baker is Matt Murdock. Period. And a WHITE Kingpin, please. I’m sure it’s some big guys out there.
Get some of those French free-running guys (like from District B13) to be DD in long shots.
I always thought DD would be better on TV ’cause a) he’s a LAWYER and b) his rogue’s gallery is super low-tech and would be CHEAP to do (The Owl, Stilt-Man, Gladiator, Batroc, Bullseye, etc.)
AND CAN WE HAVE AN ON-SCREEN CO-CREATOR CREDIT FOR BILL EVERETT????
I do like David Slade (“Hard Candy”) so we shall see. As always, keeping an open mind.
Yes daredevil and elektra where not great films but Jennifer Garner rocked as elektra…… she does her own stunts and can she kicks ass an elektra movie reboot should be done and properly she’s a fucking assassin lots more action should be in a film about marvels character and I do pray Jennifer Garner plays the part cause no one else could and that’s just my opinion!
Never understood the complaints about Michael Clark Duncan as Kingpin. Who cares if he’s black or white? Why does Kinpin have to be white?
Would you exchange your eyesight for some crappy sensory enhancements and a hot short-term Greek girlfriend you can’t see? Oh, you wouldn’t? That’s why Daredevil sucks. No wish fulfillment.
Fox should trade him away like Jeremy Lin.
