EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures must be expecting a fairy-tale ending for Snow White And The Huntsman. I’m told the studio is already in discussions with David Koepp to come aboard to write the sequel. The word is the studio hopes to fast track the project so that Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders can make it the next project he directs.
Huntsman bows June 1, with Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth playing the title characters, and Charlize Theron as the evil Queen Ravenna. Trailers for the film have been intriguing, and it doesn’t seem that Universal lost anything by not being the first Snow White pic to hit the screen. After playing a game of chicken with Relativity Media over rival projects, Relativity won that battle by releasing Mirror Mirror on March 30. The film has so far grossed $56 million domestic, and $132 million worldwide. That’s hardly a blockbuster and the movies are so different in tone that perhaps Universal has a right to feel bullish enough to start on a sequel. CAA, David Fox and Eric Greenspan rep Koepp.

Good news, assuming the film lives up to its promise.
But I was sure that they were talking about this being a trilogy last summer at Comic Con; when they were comparing the scale to Lord of The Rings right?
They were talking about a trilogy. However, Hemsworth, Theron, and Stewart are all going to be really busy. Hemsworth is attached to a a new project and everyone wants him. Theron is attached to a new project and is in demand. Personally, I think On the Road will do a lot for Stewart (saw it…strange, but excellent, film) and that she is going to start getting a lot more offers…Sanders apparently is interested in doing a sci-fi film. It may be hard to entice all four into doing a third film.
So I guess it’s fairly safe to say the Evil Queen doesn’t die in the end.
They did talk about three films. Not necessarily a trilogy, but three films in this universe. It is also not safe to say the Queen doesn’t die in the end, because there could be NEW evil brewing. Snow White and the Huntsman is going to be an epic film. Kristen, Chris, Charlize, plus all those amazing English actors playing the drawfs, and Rupert have made this the must see film of the summer.
That’s gonna be one expensive script considering Koepp’s quote and Daugherty’s seven-figure passive payment.
Still — writers making big money: always a good thing.
I’m guessing this means Daugherty didn’t get sole credit? Makes senses because everyone and their brother rewrote this. Otherwise, they would have to let him write the first draft of the sequel, right? I might be wrong but that is what I though regarding original specs. Either way, looking forward to this. Great cast, director, and visuals. Hope the story is strong too.
He would have to be given first sequel right regardless of how many writers re-wrote his script. Universal must have paid him to give that up so Koepp could do the sequel.
Whoever gets Separated Rights ends up with first crack at all sequels. If the studio does not engage that writer on the sequel, the writer gets paid a passive payment which is almost always equal to 1/2 the total amount paid the writer on the first film (fee + credit bonus, which in Daugherty’s case was not credit-dependent). It seems safe to say that Daugherty was not engaged.
Separation of Rights, I should mention, is something that the WGA assigns to the ‘creator’ of original material. It is a means of rewarding a writer for creating the core of the property should the franchise move forward without them. Whenever you see a ‘characters created by’ credit, as you usually do in a FAST AND FURIOUS film, for example, it is an indication of the original writer getting Separated Rights.
In this case there is zero doubt that Dougherty got Separated Rights and, therefore, his passive payment (due upon first day of principal photography of the sequel).
(What ‘Anonymous’ wrote in response to this is also more or less correct — the passive payment is the contractually locked sum that Uni had to pay Dougherty NOT to write the sequel first)
so if the queen dies in this film, who is going to be the main selling point for the next one?
I want to see Snow White and the Santorum followed by Snow White and the Gingrich then Snow White and the Romney. Thank you.
Wow: hilarious. Hurry up, Kimmel could still use you for the dinner tonight.
The Queen dies and Snow White gets her happy ending. The end. What is the sequel going to be about? This has fail written all over it.
The trailer looks good but a sequel is so unnecessary IMO.
So maybe the next one will be about Snow White and Prince Charming? Or are they going with the old cliche that the Huntsman finds out he’s really a prince and didn’t know it?
A film with Kristen Stewart in it? That makes this one a must-miss for me. Good lord, that girl just can’t act.
You should take a reading comprehension class instead of seeing the movie and then read The hunger games. Then you can understand how great YA fiction can be and stop with the ignorant comments on this site.
What does the Hunger Games have to do with Kristen Stewart? Other than the fact that both she and that movie are quite terrible.
And sorry, but I have no interest in YA fiction, as I am an adult and not a child. And even if I were a child, I’d like to think I have more self-respect for myself than to degrade my mind by reading the dreck that is YA fiction. Stuff like Twilight, The Hunger Games, The Host, etc.
Watch her play Joan Jett in ‘The Runaways’ and then eat your comment.
I did see her in The Runaways. Once again – she just can’t act.
In your opinion. Having seen several of her indies, I and quite a few others disagree. She and Chris Evans (surprisingly) were very good in a little film called Fierce People. The film was a hot mess, but the performances were excellent. She was quite good in the stripper movie (can’t recall the title) with Melissa Leo too.
It was Welcome To The Rileys and it was good.
It is indeed my opinion.
It is also my opinion that I think most people share my opinion of Kristen Stewart. You know, that she can’t act. Because she can’t.
This seems a bit premature. I’ve read the script for the first one and it underwhelmed me. It’ll be interesting to see if star power, CGI and big battle scenes can overcome a weak story to produce a profit.
Are you talking about the original script? The first one was blah, but the re-written one was excellent. Amini can work miracles.
how do you know kristen stewart can’t act or anyone else that depends if the queen is dead or snow white eats the apple you haven’t watch any snow white films how can people be so Ignorant besides they all have others plans and projects
