The Walt Disney Studios has set March 14, 2014 for the U.S. release of Maleficent, the film that stars Angelina Jolie in the title role as Disney’s ultimate villain. The live-action film explores the origins of the evil fairy Maleficent and what led her to curse Princess Aurora in the animated Disney classic Sleeping Beauty. Elle Fanning is in talks to play Aurora. Robert Stromberg, the production designer of such films as Avatar and Disney’s Alice in Wonderland and Oz The Great and Powerful, is directing a script by Linda Woolverton, whose work includes Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Alice in Wonderland. Joe Roth, who produced Alice in Wonderland and Oz The Great and Powerful, will produce Maleficent.

Can.Not.Wait. Maleficent is my all-time fave villain. I think Angelina is the perfect choice for this.
LOOOOOOVE A. JOLIE. HOPE THIS WILL BE A GREAT MOVIE. CAN’T WAIT TO SEE IT!!!!!
Angelina hasn’t been in a good movie yet… guessing we’ll get more of the same here.
Yours has to be the most ignorant comment made on this blog today…if not for all time. Your jealousy is beyond transparent…
Nope, not jealous of The Tourist, Gone in Sixty Seconds, Salt, The Good Shepherd, Girl Interrupted, Gia, Wanted, Changeling, Land of Blood and Honey… not one bit actually.
Just want one good movie out of her. Just one. Otherwise, she’s no better than Snookie’s Cookie.
a live action disney movie… how rare… i watch a lot of old flicks on hbo, max etc… so many fun good live action disney flocks from the 80′s and 90′s… stuff that had nothing to do with toons… ruthless people, stakeout, sister act, good morn vietnam, sweet home alabama, the rock… what the hell are they doing over there now?
Perfect role for Angelina and perfect film for Disney. Can’t wait!
Angelina always delivers. Her problem is in choosing material. “Salt” was meh, “Wanted” was meh and like others I’m not really interested in the film she directed. In fairness whoever would’ve thought The Tourist with both Depp and von Donnersmarck was gonna suck so bad? Have to give her a pass on that.
I am a fan of Angelina’s but to me the most interesting thing here is the perfect casting of Elle Fanning opposite Angie. I am expecting limited screen time for Elle and because of that I expect her role to be heavy on symbolism; goodness, purity, youth, angelic beauty, etc. Combine that with all the controversial perceptions of Angie. Symbolically they are the “ying” to the others “yang”. A good director would take advantage of those perceptions and should come up with a better than worthwhile film.
Amazing how easy it is in this business of ours to simply forget and omit those who champion an idea from inception to sale, and from sale to green light. Such is the case with this project, per my understanding of the facts. Joe Roth had little to do with the cultivation of this concept and yet his is the only name mentioned on the producer line in this and any press release. I’m not saying Matt Smith should be given a ticker tape parade, or even heralded as a great idea man. But mention the guy’s name for Pete’s sake. Throw the dude a bone, instead of boning the dude.
This is disgusting. Only a filth full industry like Hollywood would promote and glamorize fairy tale villains who FOR YEARS have wreaked havoc on innocent lives through black magic.
Oh, yes, the entertainment industry wants to ruin innocent lives through ‘black magic’…like it has nothing better to do! You’re a moron….isn’t there a Kirk Cameron movie somewhere you should be supporting?
Wow there are some really talented people behind this..
I can’t wait.
Love Ms. Angie, and have missed her on the big screen. Hope she does something else too.
Sera that this will be the only project of Angelina until 2014 …. As I suffer every year it gets more time off work from one project to another. She could do a second smaller productions that did not require much time for her ….
I would love to see this movie and the casting of Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning make it more interesting. Jolie has a large worldwide fan base for her action movies so I hope they keep it fast paced and interesting to meet the fans expectations. Although the Tourist ended up making almost 300M WW, I felt the movies disappointment came with both a poor script and the director, Donnersmarck’s, lack of experience having had only one full length movie under his belt before directing it. I enjoyed Salt, but the script needed improvement. However, with this project, Linda Woolverton’s has proven herself to be a great script writer with several great films under her belt and Robert Stromberg’s experience and creative track record in Avatar and Alice in Wonderland bring renewed interest in this film for me. I hope Disney puts something out there that is so creative and just something we haven’t seen before. It’s going to have to in order to do well at the box office considering this is the third of a string of newly released movies based on the classic fairy tales of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
she managed to destroy all the movie star image with that bloody leg!
Angelina Jolie is the perfect role for Maleficent. Cannot wait for the movie. I think really though, Dakota Fanning should be Aurora, not Elle Fanning. Both are good actresses, but Dakota Fanning and Angelina Jolie are more likely to pull off a better movie. But I gotta say, regardless of who plays the princess, Angelina Jolie is so awesome, that I know the movie will be too. I have not been disappointed in a single Jolie film yet.
