EXCLUSIVE: Disney has feature film plans for Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, one of its longest-running theme park rides. The studio has set iconic commercials and video director Pete Candeland to develop a live-action/CGI mix feature that will bring to life a theme park ride that originated in Disneyland on its opening in 1955. The twisting, turning ride was also popular at Walt Disney World in Florida, but the geniuses at the park closed the ride in 1998 and replaced it with The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh, which by comparison is a 10-minute nap for parents. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is based on Disney’s adaptation of The Wind In The Willows. Tron: Legacy producer Justin Springer will produce Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and the studio is looking for a writer to draft the plot into a film. Disney, which turned its Pirates Of The Caribbean attraction into a billion-dollar feature franchise, has a version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea with David Fincher among several percolating projects inspired by theme park attractions.
The Verve-repped Candeland is best known for his work with animation and for creating and directing the music videos for The Gorillaz. He also worked with Paul McCartney to create a cinematic opening to The Beatles Rock Band for Harmonix. Catch that opening below:

And I heard that if the movie is a hit, they’re gonna turn it into a ride.
It WAS one of their longest running rides — until they destroyed it (at Disney World anyway).
And one of the best rides for “enhanced” viewing, second only perhaps to the long-lost Journey Through Inner Space (and by “enhanced,” I mean “on drugs.”)
It still is. It’s still going strong at Disneyland. Since that was the original park it’s one of the few remaining rides from the 1955 opening of Disneyland making it one of the longest running rides.
Why don’t they just adapt the movie from the exceptional piece of literature that the Disneyland ride is based on?
L-i-t-e-r-a-t-u-r-e?
Seriously though, with Capt. Nemo’s subs now a Finding Nemo ride and Tom Sawyer’s Island now a Pirates-style attraction, it’s clear the house of Mouse has little interest in anything that smacks of fancy book learnin’!
Because the book wasn’t designed by a group of people on acid and, from what I can remember, didn’t end with Toad burning in hell like the ride does.
Disney knows exceptional literature. They just don’t want it.
Disney had the 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA ride, which I thought was great. Perhaps
that many leagues was way beyond budget, so it got closed. And the public just wouldn’t
buy “2 Leagues Under the Sea”….. Jules Verne, too bad!
Meh, I’ll wait for the book of the film.
Great ride, and great idea for a movie adaptation. Really fun characters too. I don’t know much about the other Disney ride adaptations in the works, but this one should be fun.
Sorry, but The Haunted Mansion and The Country Bears makes me think Pirates of the Caribbean was just a fluke.
And “Tower of Terror” …even though it wasn’t a theatrical feature.
Is this serious? does anyone over there have any idea what film development is about? next, we will be reading “Disney to make a movie based upon the mickey-shaped waffles–they’ve been served at the park for years, and are beloved by families from around the world…”
embarassing. have an interesting idea, if not an original one.
Wouldn’t this basically be another adaptation of Wind in The Willows?
So… if the movie is a success, will they put the ride back?
Don’t poo on POOH in Orlando. It’s an entertaining ride that both kids and adults love. The queue was updated recently and is also plenty fun.
Added bonus: no trips to Hell.
That ride is an epic failure. More kids scream in fear of the psychedelic effects on that ride than on the Haunted Mansion. I used to work in the park so I know this. It has ridiculously short lines because no one likes it except a few 5 year olds.
Absolute nonsense, Lauren. It’s BELOVED. Lines are comparable to the rest of the dark rides in Fantasyland.
Nice try.
I don’t know any adults who actually ENJOY the Winnie the Pooh ride. At Disneyland, the line is usually very short. At WDW, it’s only longer because more morons go there than to Disneyland.
Will Johnny Depp be Mr. Toad?
Totally agree Michael, this version is just another sell out retarded Disney remake (cough Matterhorn). Also that video is terrible.
Will they finally explain what the hell is happening in that ride?! And why you end up in hell?
Exactly. My family always called it “Mr. Toad Goes to Hell.” A very disturbing little diversion at “the happiest place on earth.”
They ARE!! Script being written directly from the Disneyworld guide and map!!!
justin springer is a rockstar and will make an original, no doubt.
Throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks, are we?
Hmm.. I guess an all new movie rather than an awful rehash like Cinderella II or Jungle Book II would at least be a bit better. Maybe… (not holding my breath)
I don’t what’s going on over at Disney Pictures, but this is disappointing news to me.
Disney did a movie already. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is number 11 in the Disney Animated Feature Cannon. Why are they remaking it in CGI? What ever happened to Disney bringing back hand drawn animation? The Princess and the Frog was the best Disney movie of the decade, and then there was Winnie-the-Pooh (another good movie), yet out of all the Disney films in production, none are going to be traditionally animated. Frozen, another movie they’re working would have been perfect for hand drawn, but instead they’re making CGI. I say under the Disney Feature Animation they should stick to hand drawn, and use the Disney/Pixar brand solely for CGI.
I’m also not a fan of all these movies being based off of theme parks (like the upcoming Magic Kingdom) and all these remakes from Disney. They re-did Alice in Wonderland, re-did Winnie the Pooh, they’re re-doing Frankenweenie, they’re doing a remake of Sleeping Beauty with Maleficent, and now a remake of The WInd in the Willows.
If US based Disney parks would fire their bean counters and install the Pooh’s Hunny Hunt ride vehicles and ride from Tokyo Disneyland which is an astonishing experience and whose Fast Passes are all given out for the day by 10am because the ride is so extraordinary, they’d have a humongous hit on their hands. What do yo say, John Lasseter?
This is such a bad idea. The ride is already based on a movie. They don’t need to make another movie based on the ride. You just know that if the movie is a success, they’ll change the ride to match the movie. Confused yet? Just ask Pirates of the Caribbean.
I cannot wit for the Ferris Wheel movie… and then Miniature Golf — should be epic, too… Wow… I cannot wait… and then do you think someone could do, like, Jungle Gym; the movie… I mean, ideas like this are endless… and so creative.
20,000 leagues had some safety issue which is why they removed the ride and nothing was there for years. Replacing it with Finding Nemo was smart since that’s what kids know these days. I’m excited for the potential this movie has and given the team that’s working on it I think they’ll succeed. The ride in Disneyland is still one of my faves and always has a substantial queue.
Don’t you all know that Disney no longer makes movies? They only make feature-length commercials.
I’m still patiently waiting for the Tim Allen Jungle 2 Jungle Cruise rebrand…$60M domestic gross in 1997 dollars is no Titanic, but would help them keep with the theme!!
Mr. Toad is the only ride in Disneyland. All the rest are “attractions.”
