UPDATE: This Disney deal for Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book keeps getting more interesting. I’ve learned that Henry Selick, who helmed Gaiman’s Coraline, is now attached to direct The Graveyard Book at Disney. Selick, best known for Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach, is already working for Disney-based Pixar on a top secret film. But he’ll do this one after. Selick is repped by The Gotham Group. They are looking for a screenwriter now.
EARLIER EXCLUSIVE, 2:54 PM: Disney just made a high six-figure deal for The Graveyard Book, the bestselling children’s title by Neil Gaiman. The book, which won the Newbery Medal among other awards, is a riff on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Instead of a boy raised by wolves in the jungle, Gaiman tells the story of the surviving child of a murdered family raised by ghosts in a graveyard. Gaiman’s works include Coraline, The Sandman and American Gods.
The book attracted attention at every studio upon release, and it was optioned for a large fee by UK Effects House Framestore, along with Wayfare’s Ben Browning. They had Neil Jordan attached to direct, but never got it off the ground, even though they kept renewing the option. Disney production chief Sean Bailey stepped in, and won the title in a competitive bidding situation with other studios. Gil Netter is producing with Browning, with Wayfare’s Michael Maher exec producing. The project is a priority for the studio and a potential coup for Bailey.

Coraline was one of the freakiest stories I’ve ever seen… partially because the billed it as a child’s movie and I would only take a child I didn’t like to see it. So it was kind of a shock when my husband and I thought we were going to see a happy little movie. It was a really good movie though hopefully this will be just as good.
Coraline was hideous and depressing. People stood up and left the theater when the naked granny show came on. Neil Gaiman is not inspiring, he is obnoxious and his stories say horrible things about life. Neil Gaiman movies are like eating bugs, miserable and inedible.
Wow! Someone has their panties in a wad. You obviously are very closed minded. Give “The Grave Yard Book” a try before you bash it. It was an excellent read that I read for my schools children’s literature class. Don’t hate his plot lines unless you have actually read them all. “The Grave Yard Book” has many wonderful ideas that meander in and out of the story, one of which is friendship, family and love. I agree with many who say that his plots are not always what we think of for a children’s movie/book, but really what kids movie is all for the kids? Look at all the “adult humor” that is in Disney, Pixar or even your average television cartoon (new and old, they all contain inappropriate “adult” innuendo and jokes.
Too little too late for this regime… Hope this project isn’t left to languish when they bring in new management.
Not a great book… Nor anything you would take your kids too. I wouldn’t call this a coup.
This has Coraline written all over it — and that sucked. Best of luck, Disney! Gaiman wins!
This kind of movie would have been better at Focus since they released Coraline. I have no idea why Disney would want this in their fold.
Sorry! but it is Focus Features job to use their expertise to promote a movie and through their magic hit great numbers. Their marketing ideas for promoting “Coraline” was the reason for its lack luster in the box office numbers.
Let me enlighten the public… for a movie to break even they need to double their budget cost. Here are the numbers from Box Office Mojo… Cost 60M worldwide Gross 124M just a skosh over breaking even… it is Focus Features job to do better… the visuals on that film were award winning the gross numbers not so… They call them selves marketers…Why isn’t Chiat/Day or J Walter Thompson in this end of marketing since broadcast is going down. Ad Agencies? Anyone?
hmmmm!
You have terrible, terrible taste. Congrats!
As for The Graveyard Book – its a solid little book which could greatly benefit from a bit of….oomph at script stage. Some really great scenes.
Wow, so much hate. Gaiman is a wonderful writer and deserves all the success coming his way. His books haven’t been made into the best movies yet, but it shouldn’t be a knock on Gaiman.
The Graveyard Book is the best and most awarded piece of children’s literature in a generation. This belongs at Disney along with other all time classics. I’m excited.
Neil Gaimen’s stuff tends to be dark yet beautiful. It is not for little kids and not for everyone. It is best to look at the books before going.
The Graveyard book was only scary in the first scenes, though. It was a lovely, addicting story.
ah….Coraline was a hit and a great movie. And the Graveyard Book is fantastic. Before trashing stuff try experiencing it first.
Amazing news. Is this going to be live action or animated? This is the most magical book I have ever read. I love Neil Gaiman!
Fans of THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS will enjoy Neil Gaiman’s story. This should make for a very entertaining and successful film. I’m looking forward to it.
Damn! Why Disney? Tim Burton in 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1..
Coraline was such an imaginative and beautiful film. I’m excited to see what Selick does with this incredibly imaginative world. The Graveyard Book may be for kids, but I think its Gaiman at his best and most affecting.
With Lasseter behind him Henry will make a great movie. The real danger is Disney marketing trying to turn it into a happy meal.
What’s with all this pointless stop motion in the past couple years??
Stop motion= poor man’s CGI.
“Stop motion= poor man’s CGI” = poor man’s Deadline comment.
And what’s with all this pointless oil and water painting on canvas when we have digital painting now? You are a total ignoramus.
Add John August to the writer’s list
I think this could turn out great. Coralline is one of my daughters favorite movies and she will be 5 in June. I think it depends on the child, but we will be going to see this either way. Gaiman is one of my favorite authors. I’m still reading the sandman series and I have loved every bit of it. Food for thought: how wicked of a live action R rated film directed by Tim burton, coraline could make!
I have a lot of respect for and Neil and Henry’s work but Coraline (as hard as it probably was to make)was a disappointment, straying too far from the original story. Plus nothing ruins the magic of a fantastic world more than a song and dance routine.
I am a big fan of the GY book and had hoped Neil would finally get the same treatment with one of his films that Rowling has received with the Potter franchise. The lush setting of the graveyard he has envisioned cannot be fully realized in clay. Nightmare BC had plenty of detail compared to Coraline but even the quality of Henry’s early work cannot do this story justice.
Alphonso Quaron, Guillermo del Toro, Pete jackson, or Gore Verbinski (his name is perfect) would have been the best choices to make this a blockbuster to be remembered, and not just a filler movie to be forgotten in a few years.
Great book and I’m sure it will be a great movie. People leaving negative comments probably hated the Nightmare Before Christmas or any other dark movies.
The graveyard book is my favorite book
Well, reading some rude comments on here, I just had to post something. I am thirteen years young, I loved all of Neil Gaiman’s books. My little sister is eight, she loves his books! Comments above say that Coraline was inappropriate. We got the movie in 2010 my little sister was six, and she loved the movie yet! Lets just say, Neil Gaiman’s books are great! And the movies are great, too! – Love Neil Gaiman’s books!
I would like Focus to have The Graveyard Book but not because I don’t like it I just think that Coraline and The Graveyard book should stay together and not be handled by Disney. In fact I think that Disney will butcher it. Sure I wish they had kept true to Coraline and not have given her such a freakishly large, lopsided head but it’s better than not. To all of those people who hated The Graveyard Book and Coraline and one in particular: I personally would love to see you eat bugs see if that’s as bad. I am also thirteen but read Coraline and the graveyard book and saw Coraline when I was eight. I don’t put people down for liking something. Wouldn’t you feel melancholy?
Coraline is one my favorites. The Graveyard Book will be my ultimate favorite among other film adaptations. I loved the story so much, though I heard that others didn’t favor Gaiman’s work as much as I do. I respect their opinions though and leave them be. I can only wait till the movie is out and just enjoy the movie. No remarks or debates of any kind. Just pure entertainment and enjoyment of the aesthetics of book and/or film…
OKAY. I read this book and loved it. ARE THEY MAKING A MOVIE OR NOT?!?!?
