Once again this year CBS’ The Good Wife is the only real broadcast contender for a best drama series Emmy nomination. It was the only broadcast series in the category last year and the only best drama series nominee producing 22 episodes a season in both of its years of eligibility to date, 2010 and 2011. (There was only one other broadcast drama, ABC’s Lost, which landed a nom in 2010 for its 16-episode final season. The final season of DirecTV’s Friday Night Lights, which earned a nom last year, consisted of 13 episodes despite the show’s broadcast origins as an NBC series.) Facing cable competitors who make 10-13 episodes a year, The Good Wife is taking a page from the cable playbook in its Emmy campaign this year, trying to put as many episodes in the hands of voters as possible. The legal drama’s Emmy mailer contains seven episodes, far more than the average 2-4 episodes sent by most shows. A cable series, Showtime’s Huff, was the first to send out an entire season of episodes to TV Academy members in 2005. The strategy has been subsequently adopted by other cable shows but broadcast drama and comedy series have largely stuck to the decade-old tradition of only making a handful of episodes available to voters. In its first two years of eligibility, The Good Wife has won two Emmys, one for star Julianna Margulies last year and one for supporting actress Archie Panjabi in 2010. The series has netted a total of 18 Emmy nominations, including two for best drama series and one for writing for creators’ Michelle and Robert King’s pilot.

They still won’t win shit. This is Breaking Bad’s year.
You are so far off….LOL Breaking Bad….what is that again?
@ Alienware, no need to swear. This all remains to be seen ; )
Maybe. Mad Men could still take it. Or maybe even Game of Thrones or Homeland.
Definitely not the Good Wife though. Jesus, what a terrible show.
Is Mad Men even eligible this year? I doubt that it is.
And FWIW, The Good Wife is a most excellent show.
And I’m a voting member of ATAS, so my opinion matters. At least in this.
“Awake” is also a contender. Bit of an underdog, but critically acclaimed despite its low-for-broadcast ratings
Awake has no chance.
That gave me a good chuckle. Thanks for that!
The good wife was robbed last year. Josh charles deserved to win last year and should win this year. Mad men is not THAT good to win every year.
The good wife was robbed? Of what? It’s a horrible show. Completely uninteresting. It doesn’t deserve to even kiss Mad Men’s feet. Or Breaking Bad’s.
Wouldn’t producers be worried that after TV Academy members see the DVD’s of several (if not many or all) the episodes from a season that the member may sell or give away the DVD’s to someone, meaning the person who acquired the DVD’s have them months before the “official” release date of the particular season??
(Example: A TV Academy members gets “The Good Wife” episodes from this season on DVD, watches them, then a week or so later gives them to a neighbor, meaning the neighbor gets the DVD’s weeks before the official release date of the 2011/2012 season of the show on DVD)
Does “contender” mean to you what it does to other humans? Awake has absolutely no shot of a best drama emmy nom.
Downtown Abbey is going to sweep – best show on TV and now it is going for Best Drama!
I believe The Good Wife is the #1 show on today!! I love the fact that the shows story line is mostly carried by strong woman in the work force with a backbone to support them!! They deserve the Emmy’s without a doubt!!
Your belief is wrong.
You want a show with a strong female lead? Watch Homeland. Makes the Good Wife look like the terrible show it is.
I LOVE “The Good Wife”. The only show on TV I refuse to miss ; )
I sort of liked the ending last night, I honestly cannot think of a better ending. Definitely is making me want to see MORE now!!
THE GOOD WIFE ? EMMY 2012
Julianna> Best Actress
Josh> Best Actor
Archie> Best Supporting Actress
?
Haha, how funny. A little more realistic would be:
Best drama: Mad Men
Best Actor: Bryan Cranston
Best Actress: Claire Danes
Best Sup. Actor: Aaron Paul/Peter Dinklage
Best Sup. Actress: Maggie Smith
This show has the best cast in television and some of the best writting. It should be winning multiple awards every season.
I wish Fringe could have a chance but that could only happen in an alternate universe.
Does anyone know what episodes got sent out?
I have them. They are:
Marthas and Caitlins
Executive Order 13224
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
Parenting Made Easy
Alienation of Affection
Another Ham Sandwich
Blue Ribbon Panel
A show so well crafted in every category and so supebly cast and acted even into the supporting players (wasn’t Mark Linn Baker great on the 4/29 finale?)certainly deserves nominations all around. Recognition, however, needs to be given that networks have concerns more dominant than quality and awards generally cater to those needs.
Unfortunately for CBS, The Good Wife, and Julianna Margulies, the Emmy will now go to Claire Danes and Showtime’s Homeland (which is awesome). TNT’s The Closer with Kyra Segwick is also a strong contender.
I love The Good Wife but Homeland will be taking home it’s gold this year. Claire Danes is pretty much a show-in for best actress.
Though B, I don’t think The Closer has a chance for a nomination. I mean, I hope not…compared to other great shows. Not that The Closer isn’t good. I enjoy it..But it isn’t Emmy caliber…
I’ll bet half the people bashing the Good Wife are sexist or havent seen the show. It is one of the few network shows that is on par with some of cable’s best(personally, I think with more nominations Revenge and Person of Interest would have a strong chance of getting in over overrated boring cable shows like Boss and Magic City). I dont know if it deserves to win the big prize but it ABSOLUTLEY deserves a nomination
