sweet
Leo looks great. So do Jamie and Chris … Will Smith would have been the ideal choice for the role, too bad he turned it down, but I’m sure Foxx will be fabulous too.
Happy to see Quentin do another interesting film.
It is sad knowing that Sally Menke’s editing magic will not be present because of her most unexpected passing last year. She is and will be missed.
Not looking forward to suffering through another awards season with Jamie Foxx and his rude behavior.
SIGN ME UP!!!!!!! I’d buy a ticket now if I could! This looks AWESOME!
Foxx looks badass. I can’t wait to see this.
Repulsive, race-baiting trash. Hope it fails.
Don’t hate. This is going to be a damn good film. Story, characters, set pieces, sex & violence, at their best. Do your thing, QT.
And I’m sure you’ve read the script and are making that comment based on the script, rather than stupidly remarking out of your ass without really knowing what you are talking about, like many of those who protest books and films without reading them or seeing them…
Well, I read it. If you think I’m lying, test me, I have the script right here. And it was repulsive race-baiting trash. Phuck QT.
Yes, I actually have read the script, several months ago. It turned my stomach. Hope QT enjoys the millions this disgusting trash earns him while insulated from the social blowback.
Well, doesn’t that depend on how Tarantino approaches it? It’s tricky material, but let’s see what he does with it.
DiCaprio looks so badass in that picture ! And him playing as a racist evil guy is something I have got to see. Will watch this one day 1. ( Even though I am not really a big tarantino fan )
Do we really need more on-camera movie star smoking?!
If we want our films to portray life in any kind of realistic way then yes do.
People smoke, movie stars, too. Get over it.
So just to confirm…
Slavery, violence, racism = No problem.
Smoking = Won’t someone think of the children?!?!?
He’s the bad guy and they didn’t have the Surgeon General lecturing us in 1840! And it gives Leo something to do with his hands so he doesn’t twirl his mustache lol. Tarantino isn’t Mr. Subtle, here’s hoping Leo isn’t playing Simon Legree.
But apparently Fox’s slave wife is named Broomhilda? Oh give me a break. Is this going to be a joke?
Really, that’s what you got out of these photos? Idiot.
What’s the alternative? Nobody smokes in movies, ever?
You can’t fall victim to the anachronism just to appease a few hand-wringers.
Yes.
It’s a PERIOD PIECE set primarily in the south (where tobacco in America is primarily grown). I’d call B.S. if characters weren’t smoking.
And, as you have so aptly demonstrated, nothing says antagonist like sticking a cigarette in his mouth.
I also have to wonder, did you have the same problem with Johnny Depp smoking cigs and doing drugs in Blow or Fear and Loathing…? Or do you vilify John Hamm for smoking on Mad Men? Or how about the smoking and drinking in The Artist? Robert Downey Jr. for smoking Sherlock Holmes’ iconic pipe? Come on…
absolutely! Nothing politically correct here.
Could have left it out. Nobody would have noticed. And if Django Unchained is like any other QT movie, it will be R-rated, the tobacco policy solution pushed by many. But:
Big Tobacco and Hollywood have long played footsie. So the credited producer(s) should certify — if true — that there was no tobacco payoff involved. The film should also carry a strong anti-smoking spot up front, in all media, as Weinstein used to do on its DVDs. And if this film with smoking got taxpayer subsidies, that’s ridiculous. How many ways do you want to pay for a film? And keep paying?
Research has found that bad guys’ smoking is even more alluring to adolescents than good guys’ smoking. Makes sense. Who were your anti-heros?
As for the historical detail — as if any QT film is a documentary — cigarettes first appeared in late 1830s Spain, made of cigar scraps. In the US, cigarettes were long considered effete and affected (vs. chew-and-spit) until ad agencies repositioned them after WWI. From the late 1920s, movies were an important part of that campaign.
Yes
Looks like they just made Jamie Foxx wear Michael Landon’s old wardrobe from Bonanza.
Wearing Michael Landon’s outfit would make him “Little Bro”.
My concern is that, despite this being a Tarantino movie, it will be the typical Hollywood take on race: white=bad, black=good with no gray in-between. DiCaprio’s practically snarling in this photo. Slave owners weren’t mustache-twirling villains, they were, for the most part, average people who participated in the inhuman practice of slavery because it was profitable. They used race to justify their actions. Based on their surviving journals, many slave owners struggled with the obvious immorality of slavery (like Thomas Jefferson) but continued the practice anyway. I doubt any of this psychology and subtlety will be in this film. If the British or French were making this film—countries with slightly different racial histories—I’d be more enthusiastic. But it is Tarantino so I’ll at the least Netflix it. And I prefer Foxx to Smith in this role; the latter is too contemporary, I think.
So unless slave owners are portrayed as heroes you have a problem with it. We can see who you’ll be cheering for.
Slavery was wrong, period. It seems black and white because it is.
Dear “Deadwood” (& David Milch)
Please please please come back to me. I miss you so much. I will forgive you for leaving me so abruptly if only you come back to me. I miss those nights we spent together, alone, just you and me. You were so commanding and I willingly submitted. I miss how you talked dirty to me. There never is, was or will be another like you. I can’t even look at another without thinking of you. You are the one to whom all else is compared, and I hate that I can’t get over you.
I still love you, “Deadwood”..
Bill
Check out “Hell on Wheels” when it returns…
It’s not a western it’s a southern but it’s going to be excessively violent because QT gets off on extreme violence. He is a very sadistic personality and he’s borderline psychotic.
So wayne has a problem with on-screen movie star smoking and not on-screen movie star racism? Interesting priorities. Art would be boring if wayne were in charge of it
Read this script… all 166 pages. LOL. It’s fantastic! Oh, by the way, I’m a black guy and didn’t find it offensive in the least bit.
This s going to be amazing! Waltz is so badass. They all look pretty badass, actually.
Anyone seen QT’s scene in Pulp Fiction lately, where he drops about 50 n-words right in front of Sam Jackson? It’s cringe-worthy.
What was the deal with that?
That was hands-down the WORST scene in PULP FICTION and damn near ruined the movie.
Tarantino does not belong in front of the camera.
Always thought Steve Buscemi should have played that character.
So it would have been OK if someone else had said it…?
Are they really going to release a slave movie right after the elections? Hope they have a plan B in case Pres. Obama is not reelected?
intern in the industry and read the script. movie is great, will not dissapoint
Hope this is better than Inglorious Bastards! That mess was painful to watch!
So much of a mess that it has an 88% critic appraisal on Rotten Tomatoes, and was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar?
Absolutely KILLER costumes. Wow. Can’t wait.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo.
enough.
Is it me or are we all sick and tired of these period dress up roles. Depp, DiCrapio, Cruise (well he might as well be wearing a superhero cape)….How about doing a real story, about a human being. You know, they did a lot of that in the 70s and the Miramax 90s. Why are we so scared to just tell great stories without capes and mustaches and funky Depp hair with ridiculous accents. Enough Depp. Enough.
Yeah, it’s just you.
Definitely just you Anon
Hands down, best script I ever read.
Here comes Leo’s Oscar. Finally!
