Low ratings be damned — cult favorite Fringe will finish its multi-universe journey with a 13-episode final season. As expected, Fox has closed a deal to renew the sci-fi drama for a fifth season. While a dismal ratings performer in live viewing, Fringe has been a big DVR gainer and a favorite of critics as well as Fox brass. “Fringe has been a point of pride for me, I share the fans’ passion for the show,” Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said in January at TCA, where he also made it clear that a renewal hinged on renegotiating the deal with producing studio Warner Bros TV and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot at a lower license fee. “We lose a lot of money on the show,” Reilly said. “We are not in the business of losing money, so we’re trying to figure out if there a number at which we can continue with the series.” After lengthy negotiations over the past couple of months, the two sides came to an agreement, giving the show and its fans a proper ending. “We are thrilled and beyond grateful that Fox – and our fans – have made the impossible possible: Fringe will continue into a fifth season that will allow the series to conclude in a wild and thrilling way,” series co-creator/executive producer JJ Abrams said. Here is a trailer for Fringe‘s upcoming Season 5:

Awesome news! I think a shorter season will be good for the show. 22 episodes meant lots of filler material; 13 will hopefully allow them to properly wrap up the series. Thanks, Fox (never thought I’d say that!)
I have watched ever episode of this show and I am sad to see it go. The best Sci-fi show ever.
The episode s04/ep19 2012 “Letters of Transit” was a pleasant surprise and I have watched it 3 times so far. goosebumps! Only a true fan would appreciate this special episode.
13 more episodes does not seem to be enough but if that is the decision so be it.
Maybe the syfy channel will produce it if Fox does not. I hope the last show(s) next season won’t be as disappointing as LOST was.
Maybe you could bring in more sci-fi stars from lost, blade runner, star wars, star trek and others. Jeff Goldblum, Harrison Ford, Shatner… this would be great and with the great writers on Fringe they could have roles suited for the show and reflective somewhat of their former characters.
Season 4 was the worst of the seasons, but I feel you season 4 ep 19 was my favorite episode ever …. I got chill and remember calling my bro telling him: ” dude best episode ever”. So imagine my joy when I saw the first episode of season 5. I was dancing and crying at the same time. It’s sad cuz if that concept add arrive earlier, maybe the season would have been more then 13 episodes. Fox i’m still angry at you for Firefly, Serenity was good but the end so… yeah …you suck, but ty for Fringe Season 5 lolol
Great news; a great, great show
Brilliant writing and acting
It restores some faith in Fox too; they did the right thing for the fans
Now, can they bring Millennium back!
Fringe, X Files and Millennium = the best Science Fiction of the past 30 years. Yes, David, I agree that a few more years of Millennium would be welcome. Re-runs of entire series ran on the Chiller Network a few years back. I just checked and it’s no longer on the air.
SyFy Network programming cannot compare to these three shows. Dollhouse was another terrific show on FOX.
SWEET!
Yes… how sweet it is. Glad for you Tanya, & the team.
All right. It’s killing us. You’ve posted before and mentioned Tanya by name. Who are you?!
Thank you for making my day!
This is the best news I’ve heard, actually, all week!
Wish it was for more episodes but I’ll take it. Best drama on network tv right now.
Seriously. Best. Damn. Sci-Fi. Detective. Show. Ever.
Why.Are.You.Writing.Like.This.?
This. Is. How. It’s. Done. In. Her. Own. Alternate. Universe.
E.M.P.H.A.S.I.S.
There are more people watching C-Span than Fringe! The show is pitiful and senile- there is no reason to keep it around.
Idea — don’t watch! There, problem solved.
Bullcrap!
showing your lack of class and intelligence…sorry for you…you have to not be a dimwit to appreciate this show. best show on tv hands down.
As they said, they are not in the business of losing money. They wouldn’t have renewed it if they didn’t have a way to make money out of it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just an idiot.
Liar, liar pants on fire. C-SPAN doesn’t participate in the Nielsen ratings service, so there are no figures to compare. So there!
You must be confusing Fringe with Bones.
I don’t understand why people like you come to sites for shows you don’t care for. Grow up and get a life. Better yet an education, because if you had one, you might could understand this show and why people like it so much. Now waste your time trying to come up with a witty reply to this comment.
I could masturbate I’m so happy!!!
Do what you got to do … Am so HAPPY!!!!
Thank you Fox! I forgive you for canceling Firefly now.
I’m as happy as the next guy, but I will never go that far, haha.
No. Never forgive.
The bigwigs at FOX have some brains. Who knew?
Keeping a low rated show on the air while cancelling higher rated, more entertaining shows qualifies as intelligent? You must be from the other universe.
Oh, go eat a shapeshifter’s ass, @Anna.
I feel bad for you.
What, you mean “Terra Nova”? The very definition of crap.
A great decision. 13 more episodes will be just right. I thought the 2036 episode the other week was basically a showreel for a Season 5. I loved it.
Fabulous news! The only network show I watch. Thank you, FOX.
Just what I’ve been hoping for. Plenty of elbow room to wrap things up in an intelligent and (hopefully) memorable way. Along with Awake, my fave show on broadcast TV.
Terra Nova had 3 times the ratings of Fringe and was canceled….Kevin Reilly is a joke
yeah but it also had 3 times the budget as Fringe
And was in its first season. Comparing a show in its first season to one in its fourth is pretty ridiculous.
Nobody should be giving Fox any credit for having brains, taste or any concern at all for what Fringe viewers want. (And you definitely shouldn’t forgive them for Firefly – there is no making up for that!)
There is one reason and one reason only that they renewed Fringe – Warners and Bad Robot lowered their fee enough to compensate for the bad ratings. It was all about the money. Also, Friday is a lousy night for ratings anyway. Whatever Fox would put in Fringe’s place would probably do just as badly.
NO No NO, i think you have all got it the wrong way around!!!!!!! this is the only reason i think that we got our season 5. thanks thanks thanks Fox, ok
1. Who owns fox???
2. Little bit of info on Anna Torv from her wiki page:
“Anna Torv was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to Susan and Hans Torv[3] and grew up on the Hinterlands of the Gold Coast, Queensland.[4] Anna’s father Hans Torv is of Estonian descent, but was born in Stirling, Scotland.[5] She has been estranged from her father since the age of 8.[6] She has one sibling, a younger brother, Dylan. Her paternal aunt is writer Anna Maria Torv Murdoch Mann, who was married for 31 years to billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch.”
Maybe that explains it a little better.
Now Bring on Season 5
YES!!!!!
Thank you Kevin Reilly and Fox for giving this show a deserved proper ending. I can not wait to see how the creators finish this.
Thank you Fox, this is indeed a gift to all the loyal fans. This is one of the best shows ever written.
Is this really fair to the shows that got GOOD ratings? What incentive will they have to get good ratings if shows with bad ratings get renewed?
Love this show! Glad loyal fans will be given a proper ending. I’m so happy the show lasted this long despite low ratings. Wonder if it was a nudge from Uncle Rupert Murdoch that was keeping the show on for as long as it was possible.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. No matter what this show deserves all the time it can get.
WooHoo!!!! Amazing news!! I’m just so happy that Fringe will get the proper send-off it deserves. Haters saying that Fringe is bad are just dimwits in disguise who don’t understand intelligent drama… Go watch ur CBS police procedurals… Go on, shoo… 13 episodes means no standalone episodes that waste time and break momentum… Serialized material all the way!!!! Way to go Fringe!!!!
This is awesome news! Thanks to everyone involved in making this renewal happen. Now, if only we can get Fringe out of the dead Fri night slot.
John Noble, Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and the whole supporting have given some of the best performances on TV through Fringe. It’s an amazing ensemble cast.
Kudos to the writers too – you mess with my mind in the creepiest, sweetest, most creative ways. Cheers!
Awesome news indeed. Thank you Fox.
Good news! Happy to hear Fringe will get a wrap-up season. So little worth watching…
Oh, go eat a shapeshifters ass, @Anna!
Maybe NBC can wake up and do the same for Las Vegas, in terms of finishing up the show, even if it’s just for a few episodes or a two-hour movie. Fox knows how to finish off shows properly, wheras NBC keeps screwing things up like they always do, hence why they’re mire in 4th and possibly 5th place. MORONS! Congrats to you Fringe fans.
