After narrowing the ratings gap with long-time dominant morning program NBC’s Today, ABC’s Good Morning America posted its first weekly win in total viewers. That dethrones Today, which had been on top for more than 16 years — since the week of Dec. 4, 1995. According to Nielsen fast nationals, GMA drew 5.147 million viewers for the week of April 9, the first week back for co-host Robin Roberts after a weeklong vacation, to Today‘s 5.134 million. Compared with the previous week, when Katie Couric subbed for Roberts, GMA increased its viewership by 7% while Today, sans vacationing co-host Matt Lauer, was down 9%. “This is an exciting day, but we will save any celebrating for when the final numbers come in on Thursday,” said Tom Cibrowski, GMA‘s senior executive producer. Today still won in adults 25-54, but GMA‘s first total viewer victory in so many years will likely have an impact on the NBC show, which will look to shake things up. With Lauer just locked into a new long-term contract, the focus is on Ann Curry, who has been on shaky ground for a while.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Gma seems to have more stories, however I don’t prefer their unprofessionalism with the exception of robin and g.; so today wins , why is Ann being treated so badly.
It’s too bad, because she’s certainly paid her dues, but Ann Curry just isn’t good. At least not as a co-host.
Ann Curry should of left the “Today Show” when KAite Couric left she and the producers passed over her and hired Merrideth Viera. She should of known then to leave. Idiot.
Should HAVE left.
Should HAVE known.
Did you flunk grammar?
Its all Ann Curry and NBC’s ridiculous choice to keep her. Curry never should have been given the co-anchor chair, now, once again NBC must work to repair another mistake by its short-sighted management.
Ann Curry can barely read. She needs to go!
I don’t understand is Ann Curry that bad?
Yes, yes she is that bad.
I like Ann Curry……though I switched to GMA many years ago. Why? Because I wasn’t crazy about Katie. And I loved starting my day with Diane and Charlie and Robin. I’ll stick with the current line-up as well. Love Robin Roberts.
Morning routines are hard to break. I watched The Today since I can remember. But a year ago NBC went overboard with their cross-promotions of Bravo shows specifically Real Housewives, and one morning I simply turned the channel to GMA. I’ve been a loyal viewer ever since. Sure they do cross-promotion too (save me from Dancing with Z-List stars) but its not nearly as heavy-handed.
Ann Curry is a very pleasant competent journalist, she is a horrible host for a morning show. She doesnt have that certain something that Katie and Meredith had.
Co hosting requires a type of improve skill that very few people have , like primo Ryan and dwts/afv guy,; Ann seems perfect when she is doing a more professional format such as dateline, etc.i think she is one of the most gorgeous women in broadcasting and I enjoy watching her on today. I feel like Gma has been reduced to a kids show dialogue with weird big guy with the horrible bad dialogue he thinks is funny and shlocky blonde Lara… They belong in a 3 am infomercial. I have no idea how robin and George can face those two everyday. Please lock them in a closet and do us a favor…. Please.. Zz
GMA won the week because of the Tim Tebow interview. FACT
This week, they’ll be back down to 2nd after Today.
GMA won because Matt Lauer was gone all week, because America dislikes Ann Curry and because GMA was feeding off the momentum of the week before with former Today host Katie Couric guest hosting GMA.
I don’t watch GMA due to ABC cancelling AMC and OLTL! I only watch ABC for GH and that is it! Thankful the GH got another year! I use to watch GMA faithfully until the cancellation of the soaps!

Yes Ann paid her dues but that is hardly the criteria for the gig. It’s not a coronation, it’s a job, and she’s awful at it. Decent news reader, pleasant person, fake as f*ck at times, and ZERO chemistry with Matt, which is afterall, the secret sauce. There is a reason Matt wept like toddler when Meredith bailed. He knew what awaited him. She’s had a year, she has proven herself to be not competent at this particular role and so decisions will be made.
Also agree, Today now does way too much crosspromo, which wouldn’t be so awful if they were selling anything of even middling quality. But when it’s Real Housewives and other pure nonsense, it’s tough to be taken seriously. Grant you the show’s not intended to be hours of hard news, but damn give us something of use – diet tips, work out tips, money tips, anything but Kardashian and Housewife garbage. Massive turnoff.
The problem is that NBC has no one in the wings to step in. All their female anchor prospects are stepford newsbots with no discernible personality.
Ann Curry shouldn’t take the brunt of the blame here. Where Today has been pandering to the lowest common denominator (how else to explain talk of Ryan Seacrest to taking over for Lauer); whereas, GMA seems to be staying firmly with news. As for cross-promotion, considering the corporate culture at networks these days I’m surprised we don’t see more of it.
The bigger headline should be that GMA did better WITHOUT Katie Couric!
Viewers prefer GMA without Couric.
Doesn’t bode well for her talk show (or for that idiot Jeff Zucker who is EPing it).
Nrrd to get rid of Matt to.Since the boycott against abc I have been watching the Tocccday Show and between Matt and Anne I really don’t like either one. Both re boring and Mtt seems to take over in his interveiw and doesn’t always let them finish. He can be rude and boring.Anne Curry should have never gotten the nchor desk. She is as boring as the one who’s husband produces the Talk.both are bad.But still with the boyvott its hard to believe GMA won or even that close.
So glad this happened after Robin returned! One of the nicest anchors [PEOPLE] in morning news.
The problem here is with Ann Curry who simply is not a good fit as the co-host of Today and Lauer can spin it all he wants that they get along great but let’s face it folks…there simply is no chemistry between the two and they need to seek out a new co-host and return her to news reading duties, if they want to be #1 again.
It’s quite revealing they did better numbers WITHOUT Katie. That doesn’t exactly bode well for Abc. Imagine the numbers for her upcoming show.Yikes!!!
Ann is good at reading copy but she is a horrible interviewer. When Matt was gone last week I spent my mornings over at CBS and was pleasantly surprised. Now that Matt is back and Ann is gone I am back at NBC. Now I where I can go to get away from the annoying Ann Curry on days when Matt is not there. BTW, I find Savannah Guthrie very enjoyable.
Ann Curry was totally wrong for the hosting spot from the beginning. I have never understood her appeal beyond reading the news. Savannah Guthrie is better, but I am not sure I would want to watch her every day either. My personal choice of those currently in the Today family would be Natalie Morales. She is about the most watchable overall.
—With the GM-Monsanto food halocaust unfolding
in plain sight here, and across the world –UH–
could we PLEASE stop the soft programming device
of referring to Good Morning America as GM–A?
Ann Curry is a professional, competent newswoman but lacks the cute/quirky personality that made Katie and Meredith so successful. When she tries joking with Matt or Al it seems very forced. Also disappointed with the panel of “experts” Who cares what Star Jones has to say about anything? Dr. Nancy is becoming overexposed and should stick to reporting about medical issues (this pop culture stuff is beneath her) Donnie is entertaining but let him focus on the advertising realm where he is an expert.
I stopped watching when Meredith came to the show. Now that she is gone and Ann is in the spot I am back to watching the show!
