UPDATE, 10:43 AM: After saying that the problem only hit 2% of Gmail users, Google just put up the following on their Apps Status page: “Google Mail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users in the near future. Please note this time frame is an estimate and may change.”
PREVIOUS, 10 AM: Google’s much-used email application went down today, leaving thousands if not millions of users unable to access their Gmail accounts. “We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is temporarily unavailable,” read an announcement on the sign-in page. “We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest trying again in a few minutes.” (At 9:42 AM PT, Google posted the following on their Apps Status page: “We’re investigating reports of an issue with Google Mail. We will provide more information shortly.”) For the digitially pumped up media and entertainment industry, “inconvenience” was an understatement. Not that it prevented them from shifting to another platform and telling anyone and everyone: Within minutes Twitter was buzzing. and NPR’s Fresh Air tweeted at around 9:35 AM PST, “How do I fix this. (I use gmail for work.)” They were not alone. One production executive told me not only was her Gmail down but it was now telling her her username and password were incorrect — so she couldn’t even sign on to a service that wasn’t working anyway. “I’m trying to find my old Hotmail password,” she said, “but I haven’t used it in years.” Anyone else in the same digital boat?
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

Working in a production office in Vancouver.
My Gmail has been down [Temporary Error (500)] since about 9:15am
Same boat here with the “user name or password incorrect”. Guess its time to make that transition to iCloud email. Goodbye gmail!!
What a bunch of babies.
You should have posted Louis C.K.’s brilliant interview on Conan, Everything’s Amazing and Nobody’s Happy…
Seriously, imagine what it’d be like to live in a third world country where there wasn’t any food to eat… why is this news?
Because this isn’t a third world country.
No kidding… so we’re lucky to even have been born into the extreme fortune we have to not be there…. whining about e-mail being down is a good example of how egocentric our society can be.
Information is an essential element to our society. So, when that is disrupted, it’s news. This ain’t like the old days when everyone got their information from a piece of paper every morning. They get information now. Instantly. And when they don’t, it’s news. Wake up.
I agree, Jeez! It’s sad and pathetic that we call this a problem. Why is this news and why is everyone so impatient when their email goes down for 2 minutes. Unless someones dying, there really isn’t anything that can’t wait the 15 mins for google to fix the problem. You don’t even pay for the service, it’s a free email account! Louis CK def has it right, “white people problems.” pfff!
We’re all a little digital slip away from an apocalypse. Enjoy it while you can.
my man. I was thinking the same thing.
You should go there and help them.. we have worked for what we have and we expect our ‘things’ to work.
*giggles*
Google reported at 1:24 P.M. EDT (10:24 A.M. PDT) that G-Mail had been “restored for some users”.
Could it have been hacked??
Mine’s fine. No problems at all. Been using all morning. Guess I was just lucky.
You guys should get your money back.
Gmail is free. That means sometimes you need to go with the flow. Alternative buy your own email service with your own domain, and guess what that goes down on occasian too. How is this news? and who even cares?
you care. you care enough to read the article, log in and comment.
For all you yahoo’s who write …”Why post this, this isnt news”, Why are you even here reading this news then? Go back to your Peta/Tree hugging propaganda websites and keep up with their garbage.
Wow! How exclusive… I guess I’m part of the 2%! Not as great as being part of the 1% but I’ll take it. I have a feeling this is total BS as pretty much everybody I checked with had a problem with gmail starting around 9:30 PST this AM.
This actually happened to me on April 2-3, but that was only .05% of users. Gmail in general seems to be having a lot of server issues lately. Just take a look at the apps status dashboard.
Hopefully this issue will get permanently solved soon.
