Katie Couric’s heavily promoted return to morning television did not result in a ratings win for ABC’s Good Morning America. On Monday, the first day of Couric’s week-long stint on GMA, ABC’s morning program averaged 4.78 million viewers to 5.11 million for NBC’s Today, according to fast-national ratings. In adults 25-54, GMA pulled 1.76 million viewers (1.5 rating) to Today‘s 2.20 million (1.8 rating).
Ironically, in the last Monday for which final ratings have been released, March 19, GMA edged Today (4.974 million vs. 4.926 million) with regular female host Robin Roberts. Today threw in a mystery “Today legend” stunt against Couric’s GMA debut on Monday, which turned out to be Meredith Vieira. The NBC morning show will likely repeat its ratings victory on Tuesday with Sarah Palin’s headline-making guest hosting turn. Preliminary ratings for CBS This Morning‘s Monday edition, which featured an interview with Oprah Winfrey, are not available yet.

Why does anyone even care about these TV networks anymore? Nothing but the NFL and certain news programs on Sunday morning. That’s it. Anything worthwhile I give thanks and curses for the expensive cable subscription that frees me from the tyranny and bathos of network TV.
I’m more interested in CBS This Morning’s ratings. Did it get an audience bump from Oprah’s appearance?

GMA disrespects Robin Roberts almost on a daily basis. They are so eager to push the ditzy Spencer to the forefront, it is clear they are trying to shove Robin Roberts out, which is the main reason I can’t stand this show. They don’t seem to care about news, but they love gossipy stories and giggling from her.
But I did not watch Palin either. No way I was going to be that much of a machochist.
Katie needs to go. Robin Roberts has earned her title and is so much better at the job then Katie. Doesn’t ABC get it? We were GMA fans because we didn’t want to be Today fans, because Katie didn’t interest us. Why try to cram her down our throats now?

I usually watch Today but I turned to GMA as I didn’t want to watch Palin while eating breakfast. I actually liked GMA and I’ll probably watch it from now on. I have to thank NBC for making me a GMA viewer.
Totally agree… but the ugliest stunt was NBC and Palin; what a pandering bullshit move… NBC sucks… I’m no Katie fan by any means… and I generally don’t watch this crap but the Palin move finished me with NBC morning and David Gregory, Sunday morning’s right wing shill, can kiss my ass, too.
These are ratings for Monday which didn’t feature Palin on Today. Agreed with everything else though, especially Gregory being a right wing shill.

she rocks, she is real and fun and i LOVE her..i liked brokaw but cant watch droopy crooked smile williams…BUT WHY do they have such a soft focus on diane it is annoying..i dont care if she has wrinkles..she is so wonderful..she makes bad news seem not so bad..i truly have fallen for her newscasting abilities.
Couldn’t stand Katey Couric on NBC morning show, why would I want to watch her on GMA, which till I saw her was my favorite morning show, NO MORE!!!!!!
You can’t make people watch what they don’t want to watch by telling them why they should watch it. (Oprah, take note). Seems like the best some people can do is to make crude demeaning remarks about the opposition. I am not a Palin supporter but i can be honest enough to say that in her stint on Today she was funny and gracious – and when they went into the crowd at the end of the show she got a huge positive reception. Yeah it was a stunt by NBC but TV is so competitive now that 50% of what is on involves some stunt casting.
I for one am so glad to hear Katie’s voice in the morning. I have not watched “Today” since her departure. I look forward to her new show. I love you Katie. SOOO good to see you. You always make me smile.

The only success Katie Couric will bring to ANY network is the assurance there will be no success. I quit watching The Today Show because of her — and now I have switched to CBS (which isn’t much better). To the executives at ABC — there’s a reason she was let go from her previous job — she’s annoying.
I love Robin Roberts. I don’t think I’d watch the show without her.
Please don’t get rid of Robin just because George doesn’t like sitting next to a tall woman. I love Robin. She is so warm and genuine. Katie’s constant huge smiles seem so phoney. I want Robin back!
The only reason GMA with Katie Couric can’t top The Today Show in ratings is because GMA uses Nancy Grace as a legal correspondent. Get rid of THAT nut job and the ratings will follow.
If Katie Couric is hired on full time, that’s it for GMA for me. GMA is a wonderful TEAM and it’s NOT the KATIE COURIC SHOW!! Please keep her off and get back to the way GMA is supposed to be. I love Robin.
I have been away for a couple of days and upon my return saw Katie Couric on GMA. Well, I thought I turned to the wrong network (keep channel on ABC). Apparently, I didn’t. What are you doing ABC? When you have something good going on, you throw us a curve. No offense to Katie but she doesn’t stack up to Robin Roberts. GMA, the team you have helps me wake up in the morning. I like the energy that they put out, especially Robin, Josh and Sam. It’s something about this young team that gets my day off to a good start. Hurry home Robin, I miss you.
Thank goodness this is the last day Katie Couric will be on GMA – what a LONG week it has been with her mousey voice and the overdone ‘welcome’ from the cast. Robin Roberts can’t come back fast enough. What are you thinking ABC? Katie Couric is horrible!
I used to watch the today show years ago but got fed up with Katie and Matt. They are the reason I switched channels and I have been watching GMA and loved it until this week. Robin and George and their team are a class act and Robin cannot be replaced by Katie Couric. With the exception of Nancy Grace you have a great show and I watch as much as I can before going to work but record it every day…EXCEPT this week I was forced to get my news online MSNBC.
I like Katie but I like Robin better. Please don’t replace Robin with Katie…. Thanks.
