Universal has released its first trailer for Savages, the Oliver Stone-directed adaptation of the bestselling Don Winslow novel about two pot growers from Laguna who are muscled by a Mexican drug cartel. When the cartel kidnaps the woman they share, the growers come up with a novel but dangerous way to pay the ransom. The film stars Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Benecio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir. The script was written by Shane Salerno & Winslow & Stone. Universal was impressed enough to move the film from fall into the July 6 slot. The trailer will play in front of American Reunion.

So…Cocaine Cowboys + Blow + Oliver Stone in 2012….
Yeah, it’ll be bad.
This is MAN ON FIRE meets TRUE ROMANCE and that is absolutely a good thing!! As they say, I bet the kids will be talking about this one! Blake Lively is ridiculously hot.
Blake is ridiculously hot.
With that said, “two growers from Laguna beach” and they’re violent badasses that take on a cartel?
I thought this was fiction, not science fiction.
nice to see a real movie and not a political bio thing from stone
The trailer reminds me of tough pulp thrillers like Man on Fire, The Town and True Romance.
You just named three of my favorite movies. Definitely seeing this one.
This looks great and I want to see it. I don’t need another superhero movie.
This looks HOT. I can’t wait to see this!!!
THIS LOOKS AWESOME!!!
I love WInslow’s books. Can’t stand waiting for this one. Should be action-packed.
I loved Don Winslow’s book and I love 90% of this trailer. Salma Hayek is a little over the top for me.
Uh, Tommy, Selma had like eleven words in the trailer. With this you can judge her entire performance in a full length motion picture?! You. Are. Good.
He’s right about Hayek. You’re wrong about him trying to judge her entire performance, he was talking about the trailer.
It’s a good trailer cut by people who know what they’re doing. If Hayek turned in a jaw dropping performance, they’d find it and sell it.
Good point. I love Salma, but this clip conveyed cartoon villain. Didn’t Tarantino trademark that hairstyle?
I love Stone’s movies and Winslow’s books. Really big Lively fan. I think this is a pretty winning combination.
Blake Lively is great and I really really liked SAVAGES the book. All star cast, Oliver Stone, Salerno. Very very excited!
Good book. Hope they don’t punk out on the ending.
Looks great. Sold.
That looks really dumb.
You’re high. This looks awesome. Looks like Stone is back with a vengeance.
So many plants.
Blake Lively and Taylor Kitsch have the best plants a high powered PR team can buy.
A lot of the Taylor Kitsch love comes from Friday Night Lights fans. But in Blake Lively’s case, while I have nothing against her, the number of random “she’s so great!” comments are a little suspect.
Looks cool. Enough with the CGI crapfest and superhero nonsense.
I have not liked Oliver Stone’s last few films but this actually looks really good. I will see it.
The book is all kinds of fantastic, glad to see Winslow involved in the screenplay.
“If you let people think you’re weak sooner or later you have to kill them” = Great line!
Not sold on this trailer
looks kind of cheesy.
This would only make sense if they all die in the end. Otherwise I might be slightly offended. In reality the cartel would just cut off her head no?
Left Uma out of the trailer?
Someone in IMDB said he saw a recent screening and Uma was not in the movie.
I’m surprised there’s no Emile Hirsch either.
More like out of the film. At least in the cut I saw.
I read the book in one sitting and I have only done that two other times in my life. The film looks authentic to the drug cartel world it portrays and I can see it working as solid counter-programming for people who do not want/need to see the fourth Spider Man movie in ten years.
The poster looks amazing by the way.
Looks fun.
Funny how no one cries racism when some of the few veteran Latino actors play drug dealers. Again.
IF the characters were Latinos in the Book, then they should be Latinos in the movie. Doh!
According to CNN, in the past four years, more than 48,000 people have died in Mexico in the drug war. That’s not racism. That’s a factual statistic.
Because the drug cartels in Mexico and South America are Norwegian.
I read this as: Oliver Stone’s Sausages
such a great book…looks like it was butchered to holy hell by a sudanese child-soldier.
Blake Lively. Tim Riggins. Oliver Stone. Drugs, violence, sex and style beyond your imagination. Things are getting hot. This exceptionally cut trailer is the wildest ride since THE RUM DIAIRIES and is pitch perfect.
Get me my coffee intern and learn that less is more in these “build WOM” campaigns.
Actually we measure achievement according to audience responses concerning: Characters (hero/heroine), Journey (story/setting), Tone (emotional engagement), Originality (fresh?) and Resonance. These five-fold set of communicational priorities are all that matters, and this trailer is a slam dunk.
Let’s be real — the fact that you think that The Rum Diaries was a “wild ride” pretty much negates your entire post.
OMG….that is so funny….and true. LOL.
Except I am very much looking forward to this one.
A colleague and good friend has seen this movie and tells me it rocks, with Oliver Stone reverting finally to his old form, extremely exciting, massively violent with a great soundtrack.
