Will grownups stand in line, the way young Harry Potter fans did, to be among the first to get their hands on what the author calls her “blackly comic” tale when it’s released on September 27? Rowling says on her web site that it’s her first novel for adults. Hachette will release The Casual Vacancy in the US, with Little, Brown Book Group doing so in the UK. It will be published worldwide in English in hardback, ebook, an unabridged audio download and on CD. The book runs about 480 pages, according to Little, Brown. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of seven books sold over 450 million copies in 200 territories and 74 languages worldwide, spawning a pop culture gold mine and a lucrative movie franchise from Warner Bros. Here’s Rowling’s synopsis of her new book:
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock.
Seemingly an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.
Publication date 27th September 2012 (UK & US)

Pass.
Your immediate pass on Rowling’s new novel must be like a knife twisting in her gut. Good thing she’s got about a cool $ billion to comfort her through those long, sleepless nights when she questions her talent.
Of course grownups will stand in line the way young Harry Potter fans did! Because the young Harry Potter fans are now the grownups! J.K. and the Harry Potter books lasted a whole generation, this generation (and I’m proud to say: MY generation) grew up with Harry, so we’re obviously excited to see what J.K. prepared to us.
Already packing my stuff to go camping in front of a library. Bye.
Back only to explain that when I say “J.K. lasted a whole generation” I meant she was in the midia for like, ten years, so basically anybody with the tiniest bit of interest in books or movies knows who she is.
Okay, packed everything, see you in September. Bye.
She’s GREAT at storytelling and high concept ideas, but her actual writing style is not very good. I wouldn’t buy one of her books that was execution dependent.
Rowling is so yesterday.
I’ll buy it for sure!
Harry Potter wasnt great because of the fantasy and wizardy, it was great because the characterization and storytelling for the WRITER!
It’s like a Meryl’s Streep movie…she’s a great actress no matter the film.
JK will weave yet another great mystery because that’s what HP books were at their heart.
no!
480 pages?!
This is too long, even when it’s of Rowling.
Her biggest weakness in the HP books was self-indulgence in her (albeit wonderful) prose and over-writing. The first and second book were not door-stops and were crisper, altogether more satisfying reads.
Trim the fat, and turn in a MS at less than 300 pages, come on.
I actually think she is not a bad story teller. Her style seems geared for younger audiences, but the stories themselves boast a much greater purpose than something like twilight. Although I doubt this book will find its way to my favorite books shelf, I’ll definitely be open to give it a read.
Yes please. Can I pre-order it now?
