EXCLUSIVE: This is a real departure for Lionsgate which
has mostly specialized in testosterone movies. But chalk it up to the success of female-powered The Hunger Games and the stardom of Jennifer Lawrence. As well as the sensibility of Summit’s Erik Feig, who shepherded the Twilight Saga films and is now production president for Lionsgate as well. He’s just acquired the rights to The Glass Castle: A Memoir by gossip columnist Jeanette Walls. Lionsgate made the deal with Gil Netter (The Blind Side, Life Of Pi) who will produce. Marti Noxon is attached to write the screenplay. Critically well received when it was published in 2005, Walls’ book was a surprise because it focused on her difficult childhood with her “dysfunctional but vibrant” family. It was on The New York Times bestseller list for over 250 weeks, the longest for any memoir.

Seems like the right move for Jennifer Lawrence. Great actress role in that book!
Powerful book. That has awards noms all over it if done well.
It’s been a while since I read the book, but isn’t it basically about a backwoods family in West Virginia? I know it’s not the same as Winter’s Bone, but very very similar.
Jennifer Lawrence’s stardom? I’m sorry, outside of Hunger Games (which would’ve been huge with any number of actresses), she’s opened what movie on her own? That’s the only test of stardom that matters. Name one movie the Twilight “stars” have opened.
you are so right.
Because all the Twilight stars have been nominated for Academy Awards too…
It’s not awards what’s matter when you have the hype these young actors come with nowadays. Jennifer Lawrence might have gained some fans but 13 year old girls are not gonna buy tickets for this movie.
She’s not a star.
The Hunger Games was the vehicle that shot her through the roof to stardom. Even if she wasn’t a star before THG, she was well on her way to becoming a star based on her critically acclaimed performances. The Hunger Games doesn’t just appeal to 13 year olds and her two other projects Serena and The Silver Linings Playbook definitely doesn’t either. Both are highly anticipated and will be released before The Glass Castle. People will watch her in this movie. You can count on it.
Awards do matter. She has the perfect mix of box office and indie cred. Jennifer Lawrence is here to stay. Good for her.
I LOVED the Hunger Games, but I’ve been waiting six years now for this adaptation – so yeah, I’m gonna go see it.
I agree that the film would have opened well no matter who was cast, but if there wasn’t a impressive cast, led be the remarkable, talented Jennifer Lawrence it would not have had the staying power (a four week run at number one doesn’t happen without a Katniss the fans believe in).
She’s perfect! And Marti Noxon for the script… doubly perfect. This is now officially the next movie I’m super psyched to see.
Loved this book! Jennifer Lawrence is perfect for this role. Can’t wait to see it!
A perfect role for Jennifer Lawrence: gutsy, intelligent, independent, bittersweet. And like Hunger Games, The Glass Castle has a huge and devoted fan base that will care passionately about the casting.
Awesome news!!….so glad Jennifer Lawrence(an amazing actress) is playing Jeannette Walls as she is perfect for the roll. I’m looking forward to this, the book is wonderful and with Marti Noxon writing the screenplay and Jennifer Lawrence starring, this has Oscar noms written all over it.
She openen with Winter’s Bone and was nominated for a little thing called an Academy Award. She also carried this movie and is Hollywood’s most promising young new talent. There is no comparison between her and any of the Twilight actors. Watch one of her movies and you will see how talented she is.
The most promising new actress in Hollywood is Saorise Ronan. She DELIVERS big time everytime she’s on screen, unlike Lawrence who feels out of place most of the time and other actors NOT NOMINATED FOR THAT LITTLE THING CALLED ACADEMY AWARDS steal the scenes from her.
Do you really think that it can be only one “promising new actress in Hollywood”?? Saoirse Ronan is promising. And Dakota Fanning. And Jennifer Lawrence. Who is “most” promosing – is question of money they make in movies. This year it’s HG and Jennifer. Next year maybe The Host and Saoirse. We’ll see.
Wish them both luck!
I agree with you Sasha..I mean Ms. Lawrence is a good actress but Ms. Ronan has a more acting range than her. Not hating. I’m just stating my opinion.
I’m sorry, what movies have you seen where “other actors NOT NOMINATED FOR THAT LITTLE THING CALLED ACADEMY AWARDS steal the scenes from Jennifer Lawrence”? Because from what I’ve seen, she seems to steal the scenes from everyone else.
Just a Saorise fangirl I suppose? In case you haven’t noticed, Ronan has got alot on her plate too. She’s hardly the pauper here.
Not a slam dunk.
Book reads like a crappier, Lifetime version of Angela’s Ashes. And even that was very difficult to pull off.
Director really needs to elevate, adaptation needs to go way beyond book or it will come off as movie of the week schmaltz.
But good luck.
She was very overrated in the Hunger Games.
Not true. The only thing overrated about HG was the director’s ability. Jennifer saved his behind with her acting.
Hunger Games was a very overrated movie.
This almost feels typecast… Winter’s Bone, The Hunger Games, and now Glass Castle? Poor Appalachian girl struggles through adversity….
I will see her in just about anything, although this sounds like another bleak-ish story of poverty and struggle. I thought she was trying to avoid that. Oh well! A good story is a good story.
I think this will be a great role for Jennifer. People may know her as the girl in the Hunger Games, but she can really act. She portrayed both characters really well in Poker House and in Winters Bone. I think this movie can do really well, but it all depends on the script.
Jennifer Lawrence is a breath of fresh air when compared to the girl who stars in Twilight so why even compare? Not just because she can act circles around her, but because she comes across as intelligent, grateful and actually able to laugh at herself which is a hugely underrated personality trait when it comes to young new talent in Hollywood. She has chops plus she’s headlining an enormous franchise. She seems like a pretty smart cookie all things considered. As for opening films, even the biggest stars in Hollywood can’t open films if the vehicle isn’t right and that’s been proven time and again the last couple of years. You guys don’t even give this girl a chance before you say she can’t do it. Not saying this is the right vehicle to test that theory but plenty of young talent get multiple chances to shine or suck so at least give this girl a moment to see how she does before you say she isn’t a star. A lot of people can land in luck and become big enough to pick projects but it’s what projects they choose and how they act as human beings when given those kinds of opportunities that end up being the most interesting part of the process. I think this actor may have what it takes so we shall see.
She’s a good actress, but her publicist has sold about three different versions of her in the past few years. I find it hilarious that you and others are buying into the “girl next door, breath of fresh air, not like all the other actresses because she hunts” real girl persona.
Jennifer is an amazing and talented actress. Anyone that even tries to compare her to twilight has downs.
She is perfect for the roll. Enough said.
GIVE HER AN OSCAR ALREADY!
Sasha, why all the caps? Are you trying to make a point or something? Both Jennifer Lawrence and S. Ronan are talented actresses, and both will have long careers. My preference is for J. Lawrence though…her roles appeal to me more. She has been outstanding in everything I’ve seen her in.
If The Glass Castle somehow comes together and is made into a movie, I will be there opening day; and as long as JL is making movies, I will be there opening day for every last one of them.
First, Glass Castle is a powerful story that grabs teens’ and adults’ attention. That’s a wide moviegoing audience who read the book and will want to see the story on screen. Second, Jennifer Lawrence is spot on for the role of Jeannette Walls. Watch Winter’s Bone to appreciate her full talent. So far this movie has everything going for it.
Yes! Finally! I loved this book. I’m seriously excited and happy they have an actress that can give it her all.
I loved the story and I have given much thought as to how I would adapt this wonderful piece to a screen play. My hope is that the true essence of Ms. Wall’s rich past be captured in film.
Her mother sounded like Ruth Gordon. Sorry she is not alive to accept the role. My next pick would be Nicole Kidman for mom and Christian Bale as Dad. Good Luck.
Winters bone, Sulver Linings playbook. Both nominated for an Oscar. She’s absolutely perfect for the role.
Not only does this young lady have acting talent, she has box office drawing appeal. Should be one of the biggest stars of the next decade.
