Warner Bros Cools On ‘Judah Maccabee’ Script; Will Mel Gibson Go Indie Route?

EXCLUSIVE: Mel Gibson has just responded with a letter to screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. It addresses the 9-page memo that Eszterhas delivered to Gibson alleging that the filmmaker uttered outrageous anti-Semitic comments during their collaboration on a script about heroic Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee, which Eszterhas only aired after Warner Bros rejected the scribe’s script. One question Deadline raised which Gibson also raises: If Eszterhas really heard all the hateful things he says Gibson told him, then why didn’t the brash screenwriter quit the project instead of tolerating the slurs? This is the project that shocked Hollywood because of Gibson’s past problems with the Jewish community. One question answered by Mel’s missive is that Gibson is clearly going forward with the movie — but without Eszterhas:
Joe,
I have your letter. I am not going to respond to it line by line, but I will say that the great majority of the facts as well as the statements and actions attributed to me in your letter are utter fabrications. I would have thought that a man of principle, as you purport to be, would have withdrawn from the project regardless of the money if you truly believed me to be the person you describe in your letter. I guess you only had a problem with me after Warner Brothers rejected your script.
I will acknowledge like most creative people I am passionate and intense. I was very frustrated that when you arrived at my home at the expense of both Warner Brothers and myself you hadn’t written a single word of a script or even an outline after 15 months of research, meetings, discussions and the outpouring of my heartfelt vision for this story. I did react more strongly than I should have. I promptly sent you a written apology, the colorful words of which you apparently now find offensive. Let me now clearly apologize to you and your family in the simplest of terms.
Contrary to your assertion that I was only developing Maccabees to burnish my tarnished reputation, I have been working on this project for over 10 years and it was publicly announced 8 years ago. I absolutely want to make this movie; it’s just that neither Warner Brothers nor I want to make this movie based on your script.
Honestly, Joe, not only was the script delivered later than you promised, both Warner Brothers and I were extraordinarily disappointed with the draft. In 25 years of script development I have never seen a more substandard first draft or a more significant waste of time. The decision not to proceed with you was based on the quality of your script, not on any other factor.
I think that we can agree that this should be our last communication.
Mel

At their age, you end up working for who you should be working for and with.
Say it ain’t so, Joe, say it ain’t so.
It ain’t necessarily so, Joe, it ain’t necessarily so.
So what. That we’re even talking about Joe Eszterhas and Mel Gibson is a true hunger game for Hollywood to play in the early 21st century.
Joe and Mel are virtual dinosaurs on anyone’s screen — iPod to IMAX.
According to Joe, his son has tape recordings of Mel Gibson’s rants. Also, the film will never be made, no matter what anybody on this site thinks.
And you’ve heard these so-called rants, have you? And you also have inside info that the movie will never be made, do you?
Mel Gibson talked about making the Maccabees movie whilst promoting ‘The Passion…’ in early 2004, so Eszterhas’ accusations that Mel is only doing the film to clear his name and reputation are provably false, I also find it interesting that Eszterhas’ supposedly private and confidential letter somehow made it’s way to the press a single day after Warner Bros. rejected his first draft, and if Mel Gibson really was so hateful and unhinged as Eszterhas claims, then why do people who have worked with/for him in the film industry all come out and defend him (Jodie Foster, for one), if he really held those opinions, that would have got around the industry long before now, and you NEVER heard such accusations against Gibson until the Jewish Left tried to smear Gibson for making ‘The Passion…’, this whole thing smells of covering one’s butt from a clearly affronted Eszterhas, I side with Mel on this one…
Jewish left? Wow. You should have signed it “Bigoted and Stupid”.
Amen!
Mel spent 25 million dollars of his own money to make Passion of the Christ. You don’t do that unless you are completely involved in your project. He probably devoted more than time to it, probably a piece of himself… It is a very deep subject. In my beliefs, next to the birth of Christ, it is the single most important thing that ever happened in history, period. In NO belief, the story alone is the story of the ultimate hero.
Where Mel got hit was by the success of it, being who he was, and then getting absolutely friggin SMASHED…. and then arrested.
Oil and water.
but.. people do dumb sh*t when they get hammered. That’s not news.
He created something that created enough buzz to make non-believers curious… Then the devil discredited him. ….weird.
I like Mel.
Get over yourselves, so what if Mel had had bad press and f****d up, wont be the first or last person to do so,(famous or not) so what if someone does not like your movie? Or is he racist? Who knows? Pls there is so much crap in the world going on and movies are for insight and information but also to enjoy the experience. PATHETIC! Each to their own and the ping pong between celebrities and their egos is soooooooooo sad. Vent yourself in a more positive way. Its so easy to blame others and take no responsibility for your own being, an opinion is only that! It makes me angry!!!! There you have mine now although probably wont go down so well.
Mel the G.O.A.T.!!
The lesson of all this –
Wanna look sane? Stand next to Joe Ezterhas.
Brilliant!
Bravo !
Could not have put it better myself.
Wow. Joe got served.
Joe did get served…. what’s remarkable is that Mel can still serve it and come off highly respectable after all the ‘stuff’ that’s happened…
Mel’s still got it
The biggest mistake here was hiring a hack like eszterhas in the first place.Take the money and run Joe ! you built a career on it.
Did anyone in their right mind think these two ego-centric personalities could work together? This ended just as it should – acrimoniously. I doubt WB is really going to go forward with this, regardless of what draft is finalized. Expect Mel to just do it all himself.
Right, because egocentric people have never, ever worked together in the history of Hollywood. What a crazy business it would become!
Mel handled that with class.
I am amazed at how delusional people are about Mel Gibson.
I’m amazed how unwilling people are to let go of their hangups about Gibson. Lots of celebs have anger/bigotry issues. I don’t see you complaining about them. If they’re good at what they do, enjoy it and leave their personal lives to them.
Well said
I’m sure the chumps who call Spike Lee bigoted woudl appreciate your analysis.
I honestly believe Mel is being straightforward and honest in his response. He expects a higher level of performance because he, in turn, is harder on himself than others. Say what you want, but look at his body of work.
This is not about his work but his character.
Why are you so concerned about Mel’s character? I’m not. I’m concerned about his work. I am, after all, the consumer. Be concerned about your own character and life and leave the entertainment up to the entertainers.
I am a huge fan of Mel Gibson’s work!
It’s about his LACK of work and the POOR QUALITY of work and the TARDINESS of his work.
His body of work?? Who are we talking about here; Picasso? His biggest franchise is Lethal Weapon — target audience 12-year-old boys.
you don’t know what you’re talking about, the first two Lethal Weapon movies and the first two Mad Max features were all given the “R” rating, and alot of other directors workerd alongside Mel and ther were hardly any complaints until he replace Curtis Hanson’s original ending in the movie Payback!
David, you’re dumb. Braveheart is better than every movie Hollywood has crapped out in the last five years. And Mel’s “Payback” was better than Helgeland’s.
class? he basically admitted that the outbursts and anti-semitism were true in Joe’s letter!
When he says that he was ‘passionate and intense’ isn’t an admit on anything. Anybody can be passionate and intense!
haha No he didn’t.
Both are jackasses, but I like his response. Someone post the draft so we can all read it!
This!
I think Mel Gibson is trying to make up for the hurt feelings he had caused in the past by wanting to do this project. Now if you hire a writer to write a script for you and he shows up empty handed, then you should get another writer to write it. When everyone is ready to forgive and forget then they will do it on their own time.
Part of human love is ” forgiveness “….
There’s a lot of power behind forgiveness….
You’re not from around here, are you?
Now, that’s funny.
Yes please…let this be the last communication anyone hears from Eszterhas. Biggest over paid hack in modern screenwriting history.
Well, Mel won the round. But I’m curious about his reaction to Joe’s showing up after 15 months with no visible work to speak of. What was the tirade, exactly? And it required a letter of apology? Mel’s temper is clearly still out of control. Two wackos. Very entertaining.
Mel Gibson. A real man. A man’s man. They don’t make them like that anymore.
If by ‘man’s man’ you mean an anti-Semitic, woman-hating, immigrant-loathing, racist scumbag, then, yes, thank God they don’t make them like that anymore!
couldn’t have said it better myself! ha
“They don’t make them like that anymore.”
And thank God for that! Dinosaurs are supposed to go extinct!
I think Joe is just angry that he hasn’t been able to sell a script to a Hollywood studio since 1997. He needs to hang them up and move on.
Those two deserve each other.
It will be very interesting if this project goes forward with Mel Gibson or Warner Bros. If the Esterhas script is so good perhaps he can sell it to another company?
Are you not following?
Well, if I was Mel (and I’m glad I’m not) I would release the JE Script and let people decide on its quality for themselves.
If it is truly an awful POS, you have to wonder why Joe was hired in the first place.
If I understand it, Joe was accepted by Mel Gibson and made lots of money for themselves and everyone involved they made a living together for 25 years. It is the topic that they write about!!!!has to be looked at critically by both of them. Joe is stuck, Mel feels guilty trying to move forward. they should read more like Mueller Peter’s writings about love who says ” the world of Jesus is a superatural one human beings cannot or are not able to withstand that power …. they will destroy themselves by trying tooo too much. They are both geniuses and they find it hard to step back a little and forgiveness is the first step, but it takes t ime to get to that the human mind needs to process to mourn so to speak the great times.
very classy. Now move on Joe.
Whatever happened doesn’t matter. The material just isn’t Joe.
Ezterhaus is a buffoon. This behavior is totally in character for him. Why Mel ever thought he would get quality work from him is a mystery. Anyone who was a screenwriter in the 90s knows how frequently he was rewritten. His legacy will always be his ability to screw the studios before they screwed him. More power to him, I guess. It doesn’t elevate his work to a level future cineastes will admire. He, in point of fact, is a hack. Should have quit long ago. Mel can most definitely do better.
well said. Ezterhaus is a buffoon. I think he’s been yelled at more than once…..
Eszterhas is an overrated hack. Obviously I wasn’t there, but I get a strong feeling that Eszterhas is likely the guilty party in this instance.
Ezsterhas is a hack. Surprised he was attached in the first place.
They should re-title this project “Angry Old White Dudes”.
People expect Mel to just roll over and take it – and clearly he’s not the type. Good for him.
FYI Waxman is friends with Ezsterhas, that’s how she got the scoop.
Sharon Waxman has friends?
I think he has a lot of friends mate,
Mel Gibson vs Joe Eszterhas…this is gonna be GOOOOD
C’mon folks, admit it – THIS is the Hollywood we really love to watch: two powerhouse, nutjob egos doing battle via the press – why do you think the country drooled over chuck sheen’s meltdown last year? we wanna watch this stuff
the milquetoast “talent” that dominates hollywood nowadays is as interesting as yesterday’s garden salad
I freakin hope this story has legs … or else we’re back to figuring out which poor bastard gets to be steamrolled “directing” the next hunger games
and mel – I got direct tv dude – I’m watching Get The Gringo with some of my friends on my big screen – gonna make a night of it!
