Warner Bros Cools On ‘Judah Maccabee’ Script; Will Mel Gibson Go Indie Route?

EXCLUSIVE: Mel Gibson has just responded with a letter to screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. It addresses the 9-page memo that Eszterhas delivered to Gibson alleging that the filmmaker uttered outrageous anti-Semitic comments during their collaboration on a script about heroic Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee, which Eszterhas only aired after Warner Bros rejected the scribe’s script. One question Deadline raised which Gibson also raises: If Eszterhas really heard all the hateful things he says Gibson told him, then why didn’t the brash screenwriter quit the project instead of tolerating the slurs? This is the project that shocked Hollywood because of Gibson’s past problems with the Jewish community. One question answered by Mel’s missive is that Gibson is clearly going forward with the movie — but without Eszterhas:
Joe,
I have your letter. I am not going to respond to it line by line, but I will say that the great majority of the facts as well as the statements and actions attributed to me in your letter are utter fabrications. I would have thought that a man of principle, as you purport to be, would have withdrawn from the project regardless of the money if you truly believed me to be the person you describe in your letter. I guess you only had a problem with me after Warner Brothers rejected your script.
I will acknowledge like most creative people I am passionate and intense. I was very frustrated that when you arrived at my home at the expense of both Warner Brothers and myself you hadn’t written a single word of a script or even an outline after 15 months of research, meetings, discussions and the outpouring of my heartfelt vision for this story. I did react more strongly than I should have. I promptly sent you a written apology, the colorful words of which you apparently now find offensive. Let me now clearly apologize to you and your family in the simplest of terms.
Contrary to your assertion that I was only developing Maccabees to burnish my tarnished reputation, I have been working on this project for over 10 years and it was publicly announced 8 years ago. I absolutely want to make this movie; it’s just that neither Warner Brothers nor I want to make this movie based on your script.
Honestly, Joe, not only was the script delivered later than you promised, both Warner Brothers and I were extraordinarily disappointed with the draft. In 25 years of script development I have never seen a more substandard first draft or a more significant waste of time. The decision not to proceed with you was based on the quality of your script, not on any other factor.
I think that we can agree that this should be our last communication.
Mel

Now you did it Mel. Just for that, Eszterhas is going to write an 18 page memo.
We already know Mel went nuts over his family difficulties and that he holds some unpleasant views about various things and people. But Eszterhas didn’t do anything for himself by re-hashing any of that. The point was the script, yes?
I’ll be curious to know what, if anything, Warners has to say about the script.
warner said it: rejected
This is what happens when you put two pathologically narcissistic pricks in the same room.
The difference, of course, is Mel Gibson has a track record of making good quality, profitable films. Joe Eszterhas has a track record of making horrible quality and rarely profitable films. I’m not convinced that Joe has ever been a particularly good screenwriter. His best works are his nonfiction books. And it’s completely like Joe to show up in cavalier fashion without having written a single word.
Joe is an overpaid has been. Mel – regardless of your past crap – in this situation, you’ve responded properly. Well done.
Wasn’t there another Maccabee story out there, or someone else had wanted to but didn’t since Mel was going to make this one?
Yeap, Mel is right this time around: Joe did not delivered.
Mel Gibson is probably one of the best actors in the industry. Although his reputation may not be the best, I think he is truly sorry for any mistakes he’s made in the past and deserves a second chance from the public. He’s a great actor and sure he has his flaws, but doesn’t everyone?
No.
Yes.
you think one of the best actors in the industry is sorry because….he acted like he was sorry?
Well…Chris Brown is back in business after punching Rhianna in the face. Kim Kardashian is back in media after her whore’ing her fake attention-craved wedding. Kanye West is back and so is Charlie Sheen.
All these fools don’t hold a CANDLE next to Mel’s talents. They all got second chances, why not Mel?
Thinker,
With your line of logic, I guess we should be happy if Casey Anthony gets pregnant again.
Chris Brown is a pig who doesn’t deserve a career and Kardashian is talentless tabloid fodder, but neither are as disgusting as Mel Gibson. He isn’t reformed. He genuinely hates Jewish people and that isn’t going to change. If he were an avid racist with ties to the KKK, would you be so quick to look past his “problems”?
As far as debates go, I think Gibson had him after the first paragraph. And from what I read of Ezterhas’ letter it was every bit as creative as Showgirls.
Mel I hope you find a writer who can do the book of Macabee justice. One day at a time.
John you are a perfect? Must be nice.
Mel and Joe working to together? Must of been a lost bet at a Warner Bros. retreat otherwise why else would they have tried this?
More to come i’m sure. Dig it out Nikki.
My gut tells me that Mel is in the right on this one…classy response, honest, forthright, and clean-cut. I wish Mel well…and would still be up for one more ‘Lethal Weapon’..!
What? No mention of “foot soldiers”? I guess that is being saved for the next salvo…
Yeesh. This is just all so sad and ridiculous and yucky.
Worse, if the script is a total crap-fest, it’s a shame, because “Judah The Hammer” is a fascinating, if poorly understood historical dude. (And, you know, a Judah movie would give us goys a trenchant explanation of at least one origin story for Hanukkah…which would be nice.)
I think I’ll take a hot bath and not watch either “Basic Instinct” or “Braveheart” tonight.
Yeesh…
Can someone please roll a joint of Blackberry Kush and place it in Mel Gibson’s mouth before he goes off on these rants?
Mellow out, Mel. Mellow out.
Why don’t you mellow out Bill? You are really deep by the way.
That letter doesn’t sound like it came our of Mel’s head. Methinks he finally must have found a writer he can work with.
Yay, so the grand prize for hiring Joe Eszterhas is a nice 9 page blindsiding memo of smear. Whooooooo would hire him now? Seriously! I’m sure Cruise would kill for the next Eszterhas project. LOL!
The biggest part of this story is WHO THE F%!$ is hiring the guy who wrote SHOWGIRLS?! What? Were there no brain damaged monkeys available? This town sucks. It’s run by inbred donkeys with cell phones and it sucks.
Mel needs to go in therapy..where he can blab everything and get away with it cause he is PAYING THEM to listen and not say anything!!
Does he really think that openly telling a person very candid, sordid details from his personal life that they will have his best interest at heart when he fucks them over??
Did he not notice he was talking to a SCREENWRITER?? I mean I am sure Joe loved Mel because he found someone crazier than him!
Just like Alec Baldwin, Mel Gibson needs to count to 100 before he says ANYTHING.
As far as having an intense hatred of jewish people goes-I’ll go with that old saying-If it quacks like a duck, acts like a duck, must be a… Also,I’m most of us have had the same reaction after getting pulled over by an officer. You know, asking the officer if they are jewish, blaming all the wars on the jews. These are all normal reactions, right? Also, not all this guy’s films have been great or accurate for that matter. Patriot & Braveheart immediately come to mind as absolute nonsense!! Each of us has a right to their own opinions on this subject. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone attacked my commentary. That’s o.k. I am of the belief that I may disagree with what you say, but, I would die defending your right to say it…
These comments are amazing. Commenter after commenter, offering up things like, “Well, Joe turned the script in two weeks late, so really, he’s in the wrong here.”
What’s wrong with you people? The accusation against Gibson is that he is a VIOLENT BIGOT WHO CALLS JEWS RITUAL BABY-KILLERS, WHO IS OBSESSED WITH KILLING HIS EX-WIFE, AND WHO TOLD A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY OF HIS FANTASY TO ANALY RAPE AND STAB A WOMAN.
The accusations against Eszterhas are that he’s NOT GOOD AT WRITING and TURNED IN A SCRIPT LATE.
If you think, assuming that everything in both letters in true, that Eszterhas “got served” or “was in the wrong” or “looks worse than Mel,” then you are deeply and seriously sick, and you need therapy.
Rose, I think we’re all numb to the anti-Semetic accusations at this point. We all know Mel hates Jews. Everyone knows it. We all know he’s got problems respecting women, severe issues with alcohol. So none of this is fresh. That’s why you’re not seeing the reactions you’re expecting.
I think if anyone who’re civilized were to look at the two letters, one is obviously more respectable as opposed to the other letter is very personal and is expoiting the situation
First, why the f did Mel hire Joe in the first place? How could anyone in their right mind think Joe was right for the job? Second, I think Mel raises an excellent point: if he was slamming “Hebes” all the time… why’d Joe keep working on the project?
I agree, round goes to Mel.
been in a room with mel a couple of times for business. he seemed to me every bit like the way he sounded in his letter. a very intensely engaged man who looked for humor as much as one could find. his publicist may have written the letter. who knows. just saying what i saw and no more.
Having trouble with people putting these guys down- don’t give a shit about their personal lives- both have made great movies. You wish you were, on their least talented day, one of them. I know I do.
That is a solid response
Oh God. Here we go again. And I thought Mel Gibson is gone forever. And here he is again with his hate. That man have such big problems with anger and hate that nothing will help him. You can heal alcoholics, drug addicts, game addicts but you can’t heal hate-addicts. Just like you can’t cure Lindsay Lohan because she is not sick. She is just a spoiled brat. Mel Gibson is not sick. He is just hateful disgusting racist person. And you can’t cure that in rehab. For all those years he was getting treatment, I think he was even in some anger management classes with that Oksana case. But here he is again with his hate.
And they really should investigate him like Oksana’s rep saying. Mel Gibson is a powerful and very rich man. And he says that he will kill Oksana again and again. One time he may do it. He has all the money for it. That is scary. And keep in mind those crazy fans of his on TMZ. Did you read their comments? One of his crazy fans may do something like this and then say that Mel asked him for it.
…”One question Deadline raised which Gibson also raises: If Eszterhas really heard all the hateful things he says Gibson told him, then why didn’t the brash screenwriter quit the project instead of tolerating the slurs?”… You know that exact same question police asks every woman, that tolerates abuse from her husband for years? And they all say that this is because they hoped that things will work out somehow.
You’re comparing Eszterhas to an abused wife. That made my day.
No. I’m saying that every man needs work. And if this Eszterhas would run off the project and then to press the first time after Gibson unleashed his hate in his presence, then you know what would happened? Did you read those comments here? Those people would laugh at him, call him liar and he would lose a good job because Mel Gibson is a crazy racist.
So I assume that he was working and tried to ignore Gibsons hate. And when project was over – he unleashed his disgust of Gibson. It’s like your boss at work will briefly say something racist or complain that he hates his wife so much that sometimes he wants to kill her. And what would you do? You will quit your work immediately and run to police to report on him? And he will laugh at you and say that you made it up. And you will be an idiot who lost his job.
Dear Shy, you know why evil always fails? Because it doesn’t know when to stop. Ah yes, “Things fall apart; the center cannot hold … ”
P.S. Your slouch is showing.
It’s good to see Mel standing up for himself and replying to put the record straight. The mud thrower never gets dirty, and it’s a pain to have to defend yourself all the time, so good on him I say. And to be honest if he wants to hate Jews it’s his right to hate Jews. There’s a lot of paranoid freaks out there for whatever reason, just leave them to it I say. If you don’t like his movies, don’t go and see them, it’s so damn simple really.
Yo go Mel! Don’t take anymore shit from anybody. Yeah you had a couple of slip ups, we all do, but enough is enough. Besides I can’t stand that prick prima donna. He’s not God’s gift to screenwriting. If anyone’s read his Sacred Cows would know this.
