EXCLUSIVE: Mel Gibson is now in serious discussions to play a supporting role in Machete Kills, the Robert Rodriguez-directed sequel that will bring Danny Trejo back as the blade-wielding former Federale title character. The film will be released by Fox.
In the sequel, Machete is drafted by the U.S. government to track an arms dealer through Mexico before he can launch a rocket. Deadline revealed earlier this month that Gibson was among the talent that Rodriguez was discussing for roles in the film, with others including Michelle Williams. I’m not sure about her, but Gibson is in, I’m told. He takes the role as he prepares to bow Get The Gringo, the film he co-wrote, produced, financed and stars in as the title character. The action drama is bypassing theaters and bowing on DirecTV before coming out on VOD and DVD.

Have people really been begging for a sequel to this film?
Thank you.
Why not?
Now I know I’m going to avoid this film.
And now I know that I will see the film, whereas I wouldn’t have seen it before (and didn’t see the first one). Sorry!
makes sense the cast is full of has beens and never beens…Danny Trejo, a ex con may be able to help Mel out
Does this mean Demian is a has been since he’s joining this cast too?
Gee, I hope Mel won’t have to play some sort of angry character who hates women, because,we all know how much of a stretch that would require on his part.
Good. It’ll make 15-30 million opening weekend regardless, and Rodriguez doesn’t really care about offending the establishment (think back to his Sin City DGA decisin). Hopefully Mel will get his Viking movie off the ground one of these days. Hardly anything else has been as gonzo-crazy as his “Apocalypto” in recent memory (except his voicemails- DOHHHHH. I’ll be here all week!)
15-30m opening wknd? Idiot alert.
Oh. So apparently people on soap-boxes with completely unsubstantiated opinions now proclaim that they are idiots in tandem with their comments. Interesting. With that being said, let’s take a look at the facts:
1) “Machete” grossed $14 million opening weekend in 2,670 theatres. Not great, but “Grindhouse” wasn’t a success either.
2) “Edge of Darkness” (2010) grossed $17.1 million opening weekend, facing off against the second weekend of Avatar. For a much-maligned actor (although sans the voice-mails at the time), that’s not chump change, especially against Jimmy Cameron. There is still an audience looking to see movies featuring this man, politics and high-horse personal ideals aside.
3) “The Beaver” would have never been a hit, given the “quirky” subject matter and poor marketing (not bothering to test the waters and expand the release didn’t help matters any).
4) “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” or whatever it’s being called could have probably made 10-15 million easy, but studios are somehow fearful of hearing nasty letters being sent their way.
In summation, he will probably play a tiny bit part similar to Robert DeNiro in the first “Machete”, but it’s astounding to see the venom and vitriol already being hurled at the movie because of a tiny casting decision. The movie will be middling at best, much like Robert Rodriguez’s other offerings, but at least it will be fun and come in at a reasonable budget, which is more than you can say from half of Hollyweird these days.
^^^^Best post in this thread. Finally the voice of reason. Thanks Statler.
How can you be so sure about the reasonable budget? I heard that RR & Co. are taking their Russian financiers for a ride.
I didn’t want a Machete sequel… until now.
I do wish it was Sin City 2 though that Gibson was gracing. He would be as perfect as Rourke was to make his comeback in that world.
Screw you guys who are against this. This idea is pure awesome-ness. This will be a fun, awesome movie like the first.
I find Mel’s constant attempts to be liked to really annoying. First the attempted Hangover cameo then the film about Jewish people and now a role in this.
Last thing i would say @ Mel is that he wants to be liked. I think he wants to be left alone to do his thing – acting and directing – and be judged on that and not his personal behavior the way H-wood judges all of the other foul mouthed, druggies, addicts, serial cheaters, and bigots they choose to tolerate. And let the audience decide how to judge him.
Sounds like fun.
Wish Rodriguez would hire a writer better than himself to parse down the film/dialog/action into a more coherent mix than the first one.
Seriously. The only thing keeping each Rodriguez film from being dependable 100 million plus hits is the writing. Also: don’t overstay your welcome. 90min is more than enough Machete. Keep it tight!
The world has been waiting to see Machete swing his machete in the zero gravity of outer space he will float around and kill all the other astronauts and they will drift off sliced in two with their blood and guts floating next to them. Mel can play the crazy billionaire who owns the rocket his death should be explosive.
poor mel .. can’t catch a break these days – hope he gets help for his bipolar behavior.
So do i. Better he should have had a H-wood approved illness. Then there would be fundraisers and one of those lets-come-together for one of our own (but its really all about me) events so stars could trot out their selective compassion.
[poor mel .. can’t catch a break these days]
Yeah, poor Mel- his career is in the tank, his personal life is a disaster… and now he has to be in a Robert Rodrigues film!
So who are the members of the brain trust who decided it’s a good idea to give Mel a machete?
There was actually a Machete part 1?
“WHY DON’T I HAVE… A FIRST DRAFT… OF… THE… MACCABEES!?”
Minus context, Mel’s lunacy and the fact that he was probably waving a fire poker in the air, that was a reasonable question.
And Robert Rodriguez needs some inspiration that doesn’t come from Grinhouse flicks. You’d think hanging out with Tarantino would inspire the guy to think outside of his own world.
I do like the guy, I just wish he’d stretch himself.
Finally Gibson stopped trying to sneak into sequels of big and adored movies and went to star in B-movies. Which would probably go straight to DVD. Considering that first one (with Lindsay Lohan
flopped. Rodriguez should also hire Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan.
What Robert Rodriguez did with his career? Such a promising director. And then those Spy Kinds movies. And then stupid Grindhouse. And then pathetic Machete. And now he wants to do sequel to that ridiculous Machete movie.
Those talks with Gibson probably started before that second epic meltdown with new tape. But Gosh Robert – did you heard that tape? Gibson is totally crazy. He should be committed to mental hospital. If I would be an actor (even small supporting extra) then I would be literally afraid to be near Gibson. And this is movie. There would be hundreds of people working around crazy Gibson. And the most bizarre thing is that when Gibson will not scream then he will probably smile and act like nothing happened and all that stuff didn’t heard those crazy tapes.
Good for Mel and good for Rodriguez. Should be fun.
I guess it goes without saying, that you can add crap to more crap.
Props to Rob Rod for hiring Mel. Disgusted that the Hangover 2 cast protested Mel’s small role in the film which ended in him losing that job. What a bunch of gutless cowards.
Good luck to Mel in all of his future endeavors. Always enjoyed his films. He’s a great artist.
F THIS!!!! I WILL NEVER WATCH A MEL MOVIE AGAIN OR SUPPORT R RODRIGUEZ AGAIN!!!
So how do you feel about Charlie??
Mel has apologized done treatment cut him some slack hes gr8.
Lots of people giveing out about mel I for one am happy to see him working again. Take the artist separate from the man don’t judge his acting based on what u think of him as a person. I cant wait to see this film mel will be great asual.
can some of you keep an open mind. your all taking the tapes way to seriously. i really dont give a damn what the guy believes in, i just care about his job to entertain me and every movie he s been in he has. im an italian, so if the guy called me a wop, a deigo,a greaseball,or a guinee you what id say? PROUD OF IT and id still watch his movies if they entertained me. weve all said hurtful things and we all have had hurtful thoughts.hasnt anyone noticed yet that racism is no longer a problem and that everyone would rather see an actor fall then rise. its getting really ridiculios anymore. ime not worried about the mans opinions on war, im interested on how well he can act and i think him and rodriguez will do great.
