It isn’t a big surprise, but MGM has formally offered Julianne Moore the nightmarish religious fanatic mother in the Kimberly Peirce-directed remake of the 1976 film Carrie. Chloe Moretz is already set to play the title character, a young woman whose devastating telepathic powers rear up when she reaches puberty. Kevin Misher is producing.
Moore’s name has been in the mix for a while, but at the time MGM maintained it was talking to numerous actresses. Now, they’ve sent Moore the script and a pay or play offer to play Margaret White, the role that Piper Laurie rode to an Oscar nomination. (Moore just got done playing Sarah Palin in the Jay Roach-directed HBO film Game Change, but Margaret White makes the former vice presidential candidate seem like a raging liberal.) The film is based on the 1974 Stephen King novel that was first filmed by director Brian De Palma. Sissy Spacek played Carrie White, and both she and Laurie got Oscar noms. Moore is repped by CAA and Management 360.

Once again, GREAT casting, but PLEASE DONT REMAKE THIS MOVIE…
I MUST AGREE WITH REMAKES. IT SOUND LIKE THEY GOT THE RIGHT CAST BUT STILL WHY COULDN’T MAKE A ORIGINAL FILM ABOUT A RELGION MOTHER WHO COULDN’T HANDLE HER SUPERNATURAL CHILD.
Yeah, they could call it “Carrie”…
Agree 100% Julie is a great actress but THIS FILM DOES NOT NEED A REMAKE…after Footloose and Fame, please stop ruining the movies I loved as a child!! Doesn’t matter WHO is cast, don’t remake it. But then again, Kevin Misher has no imagination and is a slimeball…so
it figures
I want to join with the “do not remake Carrie” crowd. Besides the awesome music and Sissy, they had P.J. Soles, Nancy Allen, and Amy Irving, who were all fantastic. Oh, and John Travolta. Carrie is a classic movie and does not need to be “re-imagined.”
As much as I detest remakes, I would give this one a chance if she agreed to play Mrs. White.
Very excited by this casting news. Julianne Moore is such a talented, class act. I could see her playing this role very well. She and Chloe are great choices and while I’m not the biggest fan of remakes, I will certainly be watching this.
She is going to be awesome in this one! Great choices so far, K. Peirce!!!
This book is one if my favorites. The original movie starring sissy was done very well. I am usually disappointed with the movies based on Stephen kings books. The movie rarely does the authors vision justice. If they do remake this movie I hope they stay as true as possible to the book and it’s authors vision.
I am in distress, once again, at the thought of another hack job of a SK book into a movie. I agree that they NEVER come off as even CLOSE to the story, though a couple have gotten close ( Misery, The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, the original Carrie, and Stand by Me). My two favorites-The Stand and Bag of Bones-were horrendous, and they always seem to change his endings,as well as leave out the iconic things that make the story seem real (such as the evil nursing home attendant in TGM, resurrected the dead kid in Cujo, Had the guy shoot his kid and himself in the end of The Mist…I could go on forever here, so I’ll stop here) and if you have read the story you feel cheated when you watch the film! SK stories are beautiful creations, and one must proceed with care…I won’t see this version of Carrie (TRUST me when I say that having this name in Jr. High in the 70′s made my life FEEL like a SK book!)because the original was very good, The only thing I MIGHT give a chance would be Gerald’s Game….and I wish I could afford the rights cause I would make that movie in a heartbeat!!!
Can’t wait to hear “I can see your dirty pillows!”
Anyone else kind of hoping she plays her as Sarah Palin?
Are there no original thinkers out there? Enough with the remakes already.
Haskell – If they did that then it would just be called a Carrie rip off anyway and it wouldn’t be original.
It’s a bit of a Catch-22.
That said, Moretz and Moore would make a great pairing. If it works out.
I am so excited. There is literally no Julianne Moore hate in the comments and I love her so… Oh God I hope I didn’t speak too soon.
I hope they do a better job than “The Rage-Carrie 2″ That was aweful. This could be really good or really bad. At least they got a decent cast. Julianne Moore Played Clarice Starling in “Hannibal”. She was all wrong for the Charachter—Especially after Jodie Foster As Starling was etched into people’s minds–Not that Ms. Moore didn’t have the ability, She just wasn’t right for the role in my opinion. The movie fell seriously short. Not because of Ms. Moore, but just in general. Anyway, I can see her as Margaret White though. Again, this could either be a home run or a flop depending on how much they change the original story or not. A lot in the book wasn’t in the original movie. In the book, Carrie doesn’t stop with the high school..She wreaks havok in the whole town.
An absolutely perfect movie that has ZERO reason for a remake.
Cry me a river.
Great choices acting wise doesn’t mean a great film.
The Fright Night remake cast wasn’t exactly full of slackers was it?
and look how that turned out.
A feminist “Carrie?” Could be interesting but the directors who re-make the greats are only looking for trouble. Plus – was DePalma a feminist? If you consider his entire body of work I think someone could make the case that he was. When it came out “Body Double” was slammed as anti-female. But it’s really a deeply twisted indictment of the American male.
Craig Wasson dressed as a vampire about to bury a still breathing and male-exploited Melanie Griffith : she says : “I’m not dead yet.”
God knows he loves the female form.
In reference to women sometimes you get the impression that he’s saying : you call it objectification; I call it homage. Has DePalma really been making certain movies about what Hitchcock was perhaps thinking when he was directing all those theoretically unattainable blonds? (Which of course they were for Hitchcock.)
Play it right though the re-make can open well enough for the kids who aren’t familiar with the original and play out as a reliable DVD consumer product, a nice double maybe a triple for the corporate profit flow chart I.P. bottom line.
Isn’t that the extent of film development today?
Unfortunately this has become the norm in one form or another.
Being original…is way too hard and way too risky. Why bother going so far astray when you can calibrate your bet at the box office with material that already has a certain recognition factor through having been experienced already? In this case material that over the years has taken on the status of pop cultural legend.
Doesn’t anyone remember that crappy remake they have ALREADY made of this movie a few years back! It was awful what makes them think they can remake it again and make it any better?!?!? This makes me sad that Hollywood is really running out of things to make into movies! It’s terrible!!!
It was a TV movie, and an actual pilot for a series…Carrie lives, and travels the country encountering supernatural happenings…or something.
If they find a way to show Chloe stopping Julianne’s heart using telekinesis, I’m all in. If they cut that scene like the last movie, they can fuck off.
Didn’t she already play this role in Game Change?
Oh why not? Why don’t they just remake/reboot every film & franchise ever made? I suppose it’s easier for everyone involved because as long as they can remake everything-they don’t need to have an original thought or idea. Some of these so-called “creative” people in Hollywood haven’t had an original thought in years. Instead of giving some young writer with some new ideas a chance-Hollywood chooses to just recycle a past film. The resulting end product usually turns out much worse than the original film. Seriously, they should just stop with the remakes/reboots nonsense already.
I usually hate remakes but it’s important this one be made with these two excellent actresses. The story of Carrie is very timely now with all the bullying in schools and kids need to see this movie as soon as possible so they can learn a lesson from it.
I consider Boys Don’t Cry to be one of the most terrifying movies I’ve seen, so I trust Kimberly Pierce to guide this with a steady hand. Given that Ms. Pierce has already said she’s going directly to the source material and we’re currently hyper-aware of the bullying epidemic in this country, I think Carrie is timelier than ever. I love the original film, but I’m excited for the remake.
I LOVE Julianne Moore. I’ve watched her go completely bonkers in Magnolia, suffered through The Forgotten and even sat confused throughout Savage Grace. I’ll give this movie a shot, but I have low expectations. There’s no good reason to make this movie. I know that’s been everyone’s mission every since King publically stated his dissatisfaction with the de Palma film’s climax and I know that everyone seems to take it personally that certain plot-points in the book were left out. While they’d be cool to see, they’d also make the narritive drag a little. Let’s face it, not much happens until the final reel aside from a lot of character development (which is AWESOME). But once you start cluttering it up with flash-backs, you’ll risk losing the plot and getting generally hectic.
I’m sure everyone would have liked to see Carrie’s rampage on the town, but there’s also a big risk of putting too much emphasis on the explosions and suddenly the effects crew is the main focal point. And while the absolute ending was very well written in the book, it doesn’t translate well to screen. That now iconic scene in the movie was brilliant and a good decision.
Thank you for your time.
This one sounds great and timely with bullying and religious zealotry a hot button issue. It will be nice to see how they update the perspective of this story to reflect these new times. If done right, this could be a whole different take yet equally satisfying, if not EQUAL in other ways from the original.
I must say though the score seems the hardest to top. But to see a prom sequence without split-screen goofiness might make up for that!
why can’t Hollywood ever leave well enough alone? Please just this once, don’t do it!
After watching Red State recently, they should have offered this to Melissa Leo.
I’m still stumped as to why DePalma used that cheezeball split-screen effect in his version. It was going so well up til then. Anyone?
Oh God, yes… the tragic split screen. Maybe it was considered cutting edge back in 1976? Now it’s one of the only things that dates the classic film.
“cheezeball” and “tragic” split screen? Sorry- love the split screen in both Carrie and Phantom. DePalma’s
Use of split screen is his trademark- who are we to question an artists choices? You have to give DePalma, Spacek and Laurie enormous credit for elevating a small horror film to “Academy” status. That said, while I agree Julianne Moore is a great actress Jodie Foster would be an interesting Margaret White…..
