UPDATE: Big day for music icons to moonlight in movies, as Disney announced at CinemaCon that Jack White will score the Johnny Depp-starrer The Lone Ranger.
EXCLUSIVE, 12:34 PM: Voltage Productions and Bona Fide Productions have set Moby to compose the music for The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. The film stars Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, Mads Mikkelsen, Melissa Leo and Til Schweiger, and is described as a gritty pulp romance. The gig is Moby’s first venture into movie scoring, though his music has been featured in films from the Bourne Trilogy, Heat and Seabiscuit. Albert Berger, Ron Yerxa, Craig J. Flores, and William Horberg are producing, with Nicolas Chartier exec producer along with Patrick Newall. Fredrik Bond is directing a script by Matt Drake, who is coming off Project X at Warner Bros. The film shoots in May in Romania, and Voltage will sell foreign territories in Cannes.

Is he still around?
You really zinged him!!
“Is he still around?” Funny I was thinking the EXACT same thing.
Moby’s great folks… this “he’s still around” bullshit is just mask your own insecurities.
It’s tough eating shit for a living ain’t it.
Nice! They’ve been using this dude’s music for years. Pumped to see what he does on his own.
Not his first venture into scoring. Moby actually did the original score for “Southland Tales” and Liman’s “Go” with BT. He also allows short filmmakers to license his music for their films for free. Very cool. Talented musician.
Winning…
Moby: The gift that keeps on giving.
Moby is great… his music very cinematic… it’s a perfect fit for him.
Jesus. Jack White now too. In a town full of amazing composers…well, strike that. Those amazing composers will have to shepherd and help these guys with their “challenged” ideas for music to picture. It is not a pop album, which both are fabulous at creating.
Then again, a great music editor will come in handy…..
Wow. This week we had Slash announced that he too would be scoring a film.
Great how execs can somehow connect dots “hey it’s all music, right?”
Next time I need coronary surgery, I think I’ll save some money and hire my plumber….”Hey, it’s all pipes and tubing right?”
I couldn’t agree more! The ART of film music is quickly dying.
Always seemed like Moby should score a Steven Soderbergh film first or maybe he should have teamed up with Jim Rash to score The Descendants.
BRILLIANT choice for Lone Ranger!
Moby’s ‘god moving over the face of the waters’ in Heat is my favorite song to film combo that I can remember. Both will be interesting
didn’t moby score southland tales??
@tedj: why? When Cliff Martinez has been making brilliant scores for Soderbergh for years on end. Hes just now blowing up thanks to DRIVE and THE LINCOLN LAWYER.
