NBC’s Today is not taking Katie Couric‘s week-long guest stint on rival Good Morning America in stride. In the span of several hours yesterday NBC launched a promo teasing the return of a “legend” on the Monday Today show and a guest-hosting stint by Couric’s enemy Sarah Palin on Tuesday. (NBC refused to name the “legend” before the Monday show, triggering Internet speculation that has turned up such suggestions as Jane Pauley, Bryant Gumbel and… John Legend) Between the “legend” stunt on Today, Katie Couric’s return to morning television on GMA and Gayle King’s interview with BFF Oprah Winfrey on CBS This Morning, tomorrow morning is shaping up as one of the most competitive morning contests in years. It was Couric who conducted that now infamous 2008 interview (on Couric’s former CBS Evening News home) which hurt the then GOP Vice Presidential candidate’s political credibility.

Palin guest-hosting on Tuesday? Isn’t the point to “attract” viewers? With Palin on, NBC will chase viewers away. I know I’ll be watching something else as I can’t stand Palin. Which is a shame as I have been a loyal Today Show viewer for over 15 years.

I just set my dvr for Mon and Tues on the Today show which I usually don’t watch. Couric will be on forever when she gets her new show so no big deal and as far as Oprah and her best friend I would rather watch them on their camping trip again.
If they were going skyDiving Monday then I would watch otherwise I don’t see anything too interesting, other than Gail got out of OWN just in time before it sunk. If they talk about that perhaps it would be worth watching.
From a loyal Today Show viewer for decades . . . having Sarah Palin as co-host is a complete insult to your viewing audience.

Oddly enough, the CBS Morning Show, when Charlie Rose is interviewing, is pretty good. King, not so much.
GMA and Today are much too tabloid like for me. Spencer’s segments on GMA are painful to watch as are her “interviews”. She gets way too much on air time for my taste. Today seems desparate. I just saw who their big “gets” (besides Palin who just gurantees I will be watching HGTV or some other channel) are for next week–Kardashian, Octomom, Duggars and some others whose names I forgot. Those people do nothing for me. Just crappy reality fame grabbers. Not one true talent among them.
Where is the news and talent these shows used to showcase?

Good morning america is so close to overtaking the today show that I think this will finally do it. GMA is the better program, hopefully more people will get to sample it.
Just getting an early start to morning sweeps is all that these networks are engaging in right now. Then watch each network put a spin of how well they did. Morning TV has turned into nothing more than gossiping infomercials by overpaid anchors and staff.
Palin is an upgrade over Ann Curry.

Since all of the recent staff changes on these shows I’ve had to switch and watch CNN/ hln……to avoid getting sic….. Glad you brought up this subject so I can complain. It seems as though Josh and Lara at abc have destroyed any integrity of a news program and at CBS lose the snarky try a game show girl,; NBC new one seems like a legal commentor is at conflict also being used double duty as a host.

I didn’t watch Capt Kangaroo growing up; I watched the TODAY show. I was willing to overlook Bush’s daughter being hired (because NBC balanced it out by hiring Chelsea Clinton). I’ve never considered Lauer a journalist ala Tom Browkaw. For my money, Ann Currey wears the pants having traveled to many war zones. Currey has balls. But now this…PALIN! It’s bullshit. That’s it, no more TODAY show for me.
Ann Curry is a horrible interviewer and journalist – all she does is try to elicit emotion with her fake sympathy and head tilting. Also, she can’t read off a telepromopter to save her life. The fact that you think she’s some sort of heavyweight doesn’t really speak well to your opinions in general.

I’d rather be bitten repeatedly by rabid dogs than watch Sarah Palin. That said, I agree Ann Curry is atrocious – she is horrible on camera and interrupts her subjects.
But when the hell did the first week of April become sweeps? It sure seems with all of this that it’s sweeps stunts.

Katie Couric was great on the Today show–and then she only went downhill from there. She should have clearly recognized her limitations. Instead she donned those ridiculous glasses in her latter years, meant to make her more intelligent than she is, espousing her liberal ideology without intelligence or research and offering her opinion on such stupid things as what’s appropriate for the “Glee gestalt” on network evening news, of all places. She lost all credibility and it’s no wonder no one took her seriously.
She should return to fluff, and if that doesn’t work, maybe hope for the Hollywood Squares to come back so she can be its perky middle square.
I find it in poor taste that NBC is having Palin host. Put her back on Fox where she belongs.

If I wanted to watch Sarah Palin make political commentary, I would watch Fox and Friends. I saw her pre-interview today on the TODAY SHOW, and her comments on how to get the country on the right track offended me. I watch Today show because the hosts do not give their political views. Tomorrow I will be watching Katie on GMA
