And we have the first pilot from this year’s crop to make it to the schedule for next season: I’ve learned that NBC has picked up comedy pilot Go On to series with a 13-episode order. The project brings back to NBC’s primetime former Friends star Matthew Perry and co-showrunner Scott Silveri. (Will they return to the Thursday 8 PM slot?) Perry stars in and co-executive produces Go On, a single-camera project written by Silveri and directed by Todd Holland. Produced by Universal TV, it centers on an irreverent yet charming sportscaster (Perry) who, trying to move on from a loss, finds surprising solace from the members of his mandatory support group. The series hails from Holland and Karey Burke’s production company Dark Toy, which just re-upped its overall deal at Universal TV. Silveri, Holland and Burke executive produce. The cast of the pilot also includes Laura Benanti, Julie White, Suzy Nakamura, Allison Miller and Khary Payton. The early pickup for Go On will allow the show to start staffing right away and get its pick of available writers. The move may also put pressure on the other networks to start picking up pilots they believe in so they can start locking in writers too. Go On is actually not the first new NBC scripted series picked up for next season. The network has drama Hannibal on tap with a straight-to-series order.

And here… We… Go…
Dear John, Part Two
Sounds Awful…
Matthew Perry needs to learn a lesson that he should only do multi-cams like Friends.
He doesn’t want to do multi-cams anymore.
But what exactly is the value of Matthew Perry in a single-cam? “Mr. Sunshine” proved he can’t draw viewers. His value is that he’s funny in a multi-cam. In a single cam, he’s just another actor.
Comedies are going to be big this year, aren’t they?
Since I can’t stand network comedies, this is a depressing thought. Broadcast should focus on drama and let cable do the comedies, they’re so much better at it.
Yeah, ALL the good dramas are on network.
Network dramas aren’t as inferior to cable dramas as is the case with comedy, where the gulf is huge. I’ll leave broadcast something to do. Otherwise they’d be reality TV 24/7. Even I’m not that cruel.
I think Modern Family, Parks & Recreation, and 30 Rock would beg to differ with you.
Scifi_fan-
You should just lock your set onto Sci Fi Channel and stay off the boards.
I have a feeling this show won’t be a ratings winner. But I think I will enjoy it.
Matthew Perry has been EXCELLENT on THE GOOD WIFE. I wonder if that played into the early-ish pick up…
Who knew matthew perry could be so evil on the good wife, lol — he should get an emmy nod for guest actor….
I was hoping Perry would be on The Good Wife next season too, as they seem to be moving back into the (more interesting) political stories again. Maybe he’ll be able to find time in his schedule to be in a couple of episodes at least.
This was a great script, with or without Matt Perry. Stop being haters.
Read the pilot. Love Matthew. His voice seemed a little strange on last ep of Good Wife, but all in all FANTASTIC NEWS.
Isn’t that crazy? Like all high-pitched and nasal. Sinus infection-y.
One of my favorite pilots I read this season.
This is a good lesson for people who think that Deadline is always right.
Yesterday, “Go On” was the fifth comedy pilot they mentioned in the pilot panic update, and it was only listed as “in contention” while other scripts were considered “hot.”
As all sitcom log lines do.
I can’t wait for this. Matthew Perry has been great since Friends – Mr. Sunshine, Studio 60, The West Wing, The Good Wife. The dude can act, and he picks great shows to work on. Sometimes they’re a little too smart and quirky for mainstream audiences…but he always entertains.
Please make it a multi camera show
This should be awesome, right? I mean we all know how successful Joey was. Lisa kudrow also has that wonderfully, high rated show on Friday nights. Former Friends actor=guaranteed success! Honestly I could “Go On” ,but, this show won’t Go On that long. P.S. Added bonus-single camera=no laughs to get in the way of this wonderful experience. Oh,and who could ever forget that great show he had on Abc. Now,what was the name?Ummm it’ll come to me Ummm…
Actually, Lisa Kudrow is doing very well. Her show’s coming back for a second season, and is in it’s fourth web-season. So put away that axe you’ve brought along to grind and get your facts straight.
Give the people what they want. They want to see Chandler in Charge.
That’s the only show Perry can succeed in. Chandler Bing in charge of something it doesn’t matter what as long as it’s good old Chandler.
one of my favorite pilot scripts!
Isn’t this the same show as Help Me Help You that was on Abc?
This is gonna be great! Holy crap, here! I mean, who wouldn’t love a show like this? I’m tellin’ ya, it’ll be so funny you’ll just plotz! And that’ll make it even funnier, since it’s all about triumph in the face of adversity! Am I right? Did I get it? You bet I did! Me, Barry Schmaltz!
The first pilot to be picked up . . . and, most likely, the first series to be canceled.
Way to go, NBC!
So happy this has been picked up. I love the work of Todd Holland. My favorite so far has been Wonderfalls. This is great.
Will Matt LeBlanc play his goofy neighbor?
How long before noted showkiller Laura Benanti gets recast once upfronts are over?
Agree with the others – should be multicam. Perry is a master of the format, like Bea Arthur and Michael J. Fox.
Not sure Perry is a tv lead. He’s great in an ensemble as the guy off to the side making wise cracks. But he lacks the warmth to be a network lead. Hope I’m wrong. Silveri’s supposed to be a nice guy.
