Earlier this year Nichelle Nichols (aka Lieutenant Uhura for those of you with lives) visited President Obama at the White House. Though the official photos were taken back in February, it took several weeks for Nichols to receive her copies. So she tweeted one last night showing Obama giving the Vulcan salute while admitting to Nichols that ”he was definitely a Trekker!” Which tonight prompted Conan O’Brien to joke: “Trekkies say he doesn’t qualify because he has a wife and a job.” On the other hand, maybe Paramount forked over a big fat donation to his reelection campaign in exchange for all this free publicity.

If he claims he’s a Trekkie, he IS a Trekkie! I’m sick and tired of all these rumors that he’s secretly a Battlestar Galacticaian.
Notice that Dr Gaius Baltar still hasn’t certified that he wasn’t a Cylon.
I know full well who Nichelle Nichols is and her role of Lt. Uhura on the ground breaking “Star Trek”, AND I also have a rather full life thank you very much. But good job being snarky and dismissive in regards to a woman who broke boundaries for women of color on network television during the civil rights era and made television history with the first ever interracial kiss. I do weary of this sites endless need for snarky self satisfied smugness when it is completely uncalled for. People who liked “Star Trek” don’t have a life… hilarious, and SO fresh! When Kim Kardashian tweets a photo from the oval office with the President of the United States of America snark away, but please give Ms. Nichols the respect she has earned and deserves.
um why can’t he be both?!?! I mean seriously why can some one not love both series!

Absolutely NO reason to doubt the claim Obama’s a Star Trek fan.The guy’s been confirmed to have collected CONAN comics in his youth. Being a Trekkie is a step up into the mainstream by comparison.
And besides, we know both Clinton and Gore like Trek, so it’s pretty much obligatory.Go back and watch the original series; Kirk was as hardcore a Kennedy Liberal as you’ll ever find.
I love him, but he certainly isn’t big on the Prime Directive.
Too bad he isn’t more of a Trekker. It would be nice if he adhered more closely to the Articles of Federation, and perhaps payed attention every now and then to the Prime Directive, which he’s broken more repeatedly than Kirk!

I have always loved the Star Trek series and cast members. I am so happy to see it remembered in this way. Thank you Mr. President for admitting to loving the series and for your crush on Uhura. It is so awesome, I am in the I/T field because of this series and I am not a nutcase either. So many individuals who loved this show went on to become doctors, engineers, programmers and some even joined the military to serve. These actors though only playing their parts/roles in the show encouraged many young people to go onto real roles in life similar to their own. Thank you Gene Roddenberry for your creative genius. Finally, thank you for Star Trek.
