CBS today kicked off the next stage in the pilot season ritual — the network screenings, where a large pool of network executives weigh in on this year’s crop of pilots. The rest of the broadcast networks will follow suit next week when we will start getting a better picture of how the contenders for a spot on the schedule for next season stack up. For now, here is what I have been hearing on the various pilots based on early reactions:
The only mystery surrounding the UNTITLED KEVIN WILLIAMSON project at Fox seems to be where it will land on the Fox schedule and whether it would launch in the fall or midseason. The other four drama contenders seem to have formed pairs. The two female CIA operative pilots, UNTITLED KARYN USHER and THE ASSET, have been jockeying for a slot, with Karyn Usher starting ahead, then The Asset catching up, and now Karyn Usher possibly getting an edge again. Then there are GUILTY and the UNTITLED BERMAN/WRIGHT mob doctor drama, which both tested well at their studios with high marks for their stars Cuba Gooding Jr and Jordana Spiro, respectively. Both have a real shot, with Berman/Wright probably a bit stronger at the moment. Its chances were helped by the fact that Fox veteran House is ending its run, leaving the network without a medical franchise for next season. On the comedy side, the UNTITLED MINDY KALING female doctor half-hour appears to be headed to Fox’s comedy block as a possible companion to New Girl. BEN FOX IS MY MANNY, a late delivery after it replaced its lead after the table read, reportedly got thumbs-up from Fox brass after they just saw it for the first time. The stronger than expected showing for the pilot, about a guy working as manny for his sister, shakes up the sibling comedy race at Fox, which includes early standout LITTLE BROTHER, which has lost some momentum but remains solid, and GOODWIN GAMES, which also came out OK. Of the others, REBOUNDING and EL JEFE are still in serious contention, while buzz has been just OK on PRODIGY/BULLY, mixed on LET IT GO and not so good on LIKE FATHER and LIVING LOADED.

PRIMETIME PILOT PANIC: The Early Buzz
Of the slew of soap pilots ordered by ABC, NASHVILLE and Marc Cherry’s DEVIOUS MAIDS are hot, and there’s buzz that straight-to-series MISTRESSES might be headed for fall. AMERICANA and the period GILDED LILYS also are solid, though Americana doesn’t appear as slam-dunk as it once did; PENOZA has been getting mostly good feedback with some mixed reaction too, while buzz on SCRUPLES has been mixed. On the male/genre side, LAST RESORT looks solid, GOTHAM came in OK, while 666 PARK AVE has started to fade after very strong early buzz. There is not much feedback on ZERO HOUR or the UNTITLED ROLAND EMMERICH dramas, but word is the former came in too long and the latter came in stronger than expected, with both reportedly still in contention. As for BEAUTY & THE BEAST, because of extensive visual effects, it hasn’t been seen in its finished form yet. On the comedy side, Claudia Lonow’s HOW TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS and the Reba McEntire starrer MALIBU COUNTRY are hot as ABC is once again considering expanding comedy programming to Fridays to restore the network’s TGIF block. Early entry, alien family DAN FOGELMAN comedy, has support within the network. The two pilots based on British formats, ONLY FOOLS & HORSES and RED VAN MAN, appear to have a shot, along with PRAIRIE DOGS. Of the two “girl” comedies, AMERICAN JUDY starring Judy Greer and UNTITLED MANDY MOORE, Judy seems to have the edge at the moment. UNTITLED KARI LIZER is behind because of star Mary McCormack’s schedule but had a good taping. AWESOMETOWN has cooled off.
The Dick Wolf-produced drama CHICAGO FIRE seems to be catching, well, fire at NBC as it is tracking strong. Jason Katims’ medical drama COUNTY also appears to be a real contender as is another medical drama, this one with a Jekyll and Hyde twist, DO NO HARM, which has lost some momentum but is still very solid. Another early frontrunner, mystery drama MIDNIGHT SUN, has cooled off. I hear Western-flavored FRONTIER is well-liked among NBC brass despite mixed testing results. I also hear NOTORIOUS, a late pickup which was just completed, came together well. Off-cycle pilot BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE is cold. Comedy-wise, the Ryan Murphy-Ali Adler blended family single-camera project THE NEW NORMAL has been eying an early pickup to join recently ordered to series GO ON starring Matthew Perry. Other single-camera pilots in serious contention to join Go On are White House family comedy 1600 PENN, which tested very well, as well as FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER, which didn’t test well but comes from Greg Daniels and stars Tony Shalhoub and Allison Janney. Other single-camera comedies getting positive buzz are SAVE ME and ANIMAL KINGDOM, while UNTITLED HILARY WINSTON and SARAH SILVERMAN are not doing that well and NEXT CALLER has been quiet. On the multi-camera front, DADDY’s GIRL and DILFS are strong, with UNTITLED KARI LIZER and DOWNWARDLY MOBILE also in contention although the latter seems to be cooling off.
Which two CBS drama pilots have consistently gotten the strongest buzz and appear likely to march onto the network’s schedule? Elementary, my dear Watson — the period Las Vegas drama RALPH LAMB starring Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis and the Sherlock Holmes reboot ELEMENTARY starring Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. Competing for what may be the third and last available hourlong spot are cop dramas WIDOW DETECTIVE, which tested well, GOLDEN BOY and legal drama BABY BIG SHOT. Meanwhile, early favorites APPLEBAUM and TROOPER seem to have cooled off. On the comedy side, the biggest question is whether CBS will launch its first single-camera comedy series in four years. The single-camera NICK STOLLER pilot is tracking very well and could go with either HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, which has a single-camera feel, or THE BIG BANG THEORY. If the network once again opts to go with all multi-camera new comedies, this could send a message to the creative community that it is not as committed to the single-camera genre as it says it is. On the multi-camera side, early frontrunner PARTNERS continues to do well, with LOUIS CK/SPIKE FERESTEN, DORF/FALCONE and BERLANTI/MALINS all in the mix and SUPER FUN NIGHT getting mixed reaction.
With so many CW shows — including this season’s entire freshman class — underperforming, will the network go for an extreme makeover with a slew of new series orders for next season? Along with early frontrunners ARROW and THE CARRIE DIARIES, I hear BEAUTY & THE BEAST came in good and is picking up momentum. CULT continues to be strong, with Hunger Games-esque THE SELECTION and medical drama FIRST CUT also in serious contention. For Cult, the CW has indicated it would use the cable model with shorter, uninterrupted seasons. Will the network pick up all six? While never done, I hear that is a possibility this year.
Like their broadcast counterparts, TNT too will be screening its pilots next week ahead of the cable network’s upfront presentation during the broadcast upfront week. David E. Kelley/Sanjay Gupta’s medical drama CHELSEA GENERAL continues to be hot and appears likely to get a series order. Things have been quieter for the other three pilots – SCENT OF THE MISSING, LA NOIR and TIN STAR – although Scent Of The Missing appears in good shape.

No talk about the Martin Lawrence Project at CBS?
Yea, I second this. Big star + great script. C’mon, guys.
Out of all the drama pilots listed here r my top 5
1. Do No Harm
2. Americana
3. County
4. Gilded Lilys
5. Cult
Out of all the comedy pilots listed here r my top 3
1. Go On
2. Next Caller Please
3. Friday Night Dinner
Out of all
what about the Manzani’s?? I need Kirstie and Rhea back on TV!
Exactly! What about “The Manzanis”? I want my Kirstie and Rhea back!
NBC would be stupid not to order Downwardly Mobile, I watched the pilot being filmed and it was a great comedy. Would be a hit foresure!!
I would shocked and saddened if Roseanne’s show didn’t make the schedule — I totally see her as the Bill Cosby to reinvigorate the Thursday night lineup and turn things around, along with matthew perry!
I couldn’t agree more. Roseanne can definitely bring eyeballs back to the network, but the show must be good along with Go On, etc. They need to bring back life little by little where they can so that their schedule can improve overall. They have the Voice and Smash on Monday/Tuesday, though they need to make it Tuesday/Wednesday. People forget that NBC was NUMBER ONE for years on end. They can be number one again, but they need to put out programming that people will want to watch, can relate to, find funny, etc.
I am sorry nostalgia is one thing. Look how long it took the Tim allen show to sink int the rating. Her show would have to be relevant with fresh ideas. The Whole referencing the current economic time thing is being done to death.
anyone know anything about Revolution at NBC??
I think Revolution is DOA I heard the script was bad from mulitple sources.
Ringer, Nikita, Hart of Dixie and Secret Circle I think all all gone.
CW will pick up five new shows, Cult for mid-season taking Gossip Girls slot after a final fall season of 13 episodes.
“The Secret Circle” is returning for a probationary second season.
I hope “Nikita” is renewed but things aren’t looking good
I think they will cancel nikita, hart of dixie, ringer.
They’ll probably renew GG for a final 13 episodes,
With One Tree Hill gone, that leaves 4 open slots for long season, 1 short season and 1 moee mid season after antm.
So all 6 should be picked. Hopefully.
Who cares, those shows are crap! I`d rather CW picked up all 6 pilots:Beauty&Beast,Arrow,Selection,or Cult
Still no talk about bad girls (I think that is what it’s called)?!?! I was actually excited for that show!
Greg daniels did Parks and Rec. Which is doing a 1.5 on a good night…
Most likely ratings hits on the drama side (with the caveat that I’ve read most, but not all, of the scripts):
Unt. K Williamson
Guilty
The Selection
Exciting/excellent but risky (ie possibly too smart/unusual for audiences, but I’ll definitely tune in):
Cult
Last Resort
Oh, and add Revolution to that second list.
Friday Night Dinner was such a nothing script that it doesn’t surprise me it tested poorly.
I thought Sarah Silverman and Super Fun Night both read very funny and were different than anything on their respective networks. Which is sure to leave them off the schedule. Same old same old.
I like 666 because of stars dave annabelle and vanessa williams — i hope it makes it!
I hope they put devious maids and Revenge on Sundays.
Hoping that Scruples was good — i loved that book.
I hope it’s not either/or with Scruples and Americana on ABC, but since it most like is I’m hoping Scruples makes it. The cast is great.
And still no word on Shelter? The CW has a lot of really interesting pilots this season.
It will be one or the other. They won’t pick up 2 soaps focused on fashion. Right now Americana seems to be getting the better feedback of the 2.
For CW: Beauty & the Beast, Arrow, Cult are my top 3.
Those three are the ones I want to see. Carrie Diaries don’t think will do well, and first cut wont perform if Hart of Dixie isn’t strong.
Arrow,Beauty,Cult, and The Selection are terrific. I weant to see them all get picked up!
Hart of Dixie is a totally diff show compared to First Cut.
First Cut is more like Scrubs and Greys anatomy which both did really well.
Hart of dixie is just private practice but in the south and hasnt deliver.
I think they should pick up all 6 and forget about Shelter and Joey Dakota.
Kelly, you & me both. I miss Kirstie & Rhea as well. Here’s hoping The Manzinis is one of the few that actually airs…
I think if people were aware that NBC existed, the numbers for that show would be better. It’s a massively funny program.
I guess JJ Abrams/Mark Schwahn’s ‘Shelter’ is a no go. Shame, I was looking forward to that one.
CW should embrace an overhaul and switch to cable model of programming. Their demo competitor is ABC Family, which is on cable and benefit from leaner and fewer programming. CW can benefit a lot from uninterrupted showings with less episodes compare to all the repeats that hurt momentum. I hope all networks are considering this schedule model, especially serialized shows heavy ABC and CW.
Actually shows on ABC Family have long seasons 20 or 24 episodes (PLL, TLG). They just split them up over summer/winter. I don’t see much difference than CW model. CW should consider 16 episode series that run either from Sept – Dec. or Jan-May and then if those series become hits, then up them to 24 or 26 the following season. (Current or established hit series, which would be TVD and Supernatural, should run all season long with 26-28.) Limit ATM to one cycle. As we’ve all witnessed with CW series, the key is running in consecutive blocks.
The Hilary Winston project rocks. Super funny writing and a strong ensemble. Sarah Wright is a star and Mena Suvari and Kyle Howard are great. ‘Buzz’ is purely subjective, as is my opinion.
Well spoken, Hilary.
Nikita was upgraded to “Safe Bet” on tvline renew score card.So Ausiello obviously knows something and its “safe bet” on coming back
No way Emmerich’s pilot makes it to air…
You know your project is shit when everyone is surprised it actually kinda-turned-out okay.
The number one opinion that matters in getting a series picked up is the marketing department. They can market Roland Emmerich. They can market Mark Gordon. Don’t be surprised if you see this on the fall schedule. If I had to make a bet, I would actually bet on this more than Americana, despite the fact Americana is probably the best produced script this season.
That’s just what the marketing guys want you to believe…
But we here at the top actually do make the decisions. That’s why they pay us the big bucks. And fire us when our series don’t perform.
I will be distraught if Hart of Dixie is cancelled, and I don’t care who knows it.
I totally agree! I don’t watch much network TV but I really love this show!
So either the pilot for Shelter hasn’t been viewed yet or it just down right sucks. The casting was late, filming was late. The WC has shown they could not care less about it. At least Joey Dakota got some feedback. Shelter just doesn’t exist. I don’t understand why the WC is saying they have 8 pilots in the running.
And the other pilots for the network sound just as bad. The Carrie Diaries is a frontrunner? Really now? The WC will go up in flames.
Everyone I’ve spoken to says that Joey Dakota at the CW is doing very well, that I’m surprised to see it not mentioned at all here. It tested well, has been a favorite script amongst many network execs there, and it’s an out of the box idea, especially for a network that needs to rethink themselves.
If crap shows like The Carrie Diaries and The Selection weren’t in the mix Joey Dakota would have a chance. Unfortunately the former have a higher possibility at finding an audience with that network than a time traveling musical. That’s the WC for you!
Joey Dakota sounds like a crap show to me.
Who wants to watch yet another musical, all the singing and dancing bored the f&*^ outta me.
Its going to be high school musical all over again, dear god.
What about CW’s Shelter?!
Hopefully Shelter will never get to see the light of day.
The Selection and carrie diaries are great. Infact all 6 are great. Shelter is just another one tree hill and 90210. Been there done that.
I completely disagree. Shelter was mature and genuinely funny. Not young and soapy. It’s much more like Felicity or Gilmore Girls (as in a classic WB show) than anything the CW has done since. It would be a great compliment for the network with these big genre pilots.
You did not just say a Sex and the City prequel and Hunger Games ripoff are better than a JJ Abrams show. You must be smoking something. Sit down.
Well, a sex and the city prequel will do great because people are crazy over sex and the city. It’ll probably sell lots also. So CW will definitely pick it up. Its a no brainer.
Also, if anything people called TVD a Twilight rip off as well. Look at how well its doing. I predict The selection, Arrow and Carrie Diaries would not only be picked up but enjoy great success in ratings.
SUPER FUN NIGHT has got to get a pick up! My friend was at the taping where apparently the audience had so much fun they were dancing in the aisles! Plus Rebel Wilson is a comedy genius!
