(RE-POSTED FROM FRIDAY): Back by popular demand: Deadline’s Pilot Buzz lists. We’re earlier than normal this year while pilots have generally been late, with only a handful of them having cuts by now and the vast majority still in various stages of production. Therefore, everything on this list has to be taken with a gigantic grain of salt as a lot could change between a table read and a final cut. Take NBC’s comedy pilot SAVE ME for example. After some mixed and even negative chatter early on, mostly related to the tone of the show, originally developed for Showtime, the tide changed completely over the last two days when people saw the completed pilot, which is getting high marks. The list also doesn’t cover every pilot as some of them have not gotten into production yet or feedback has been insufficient:
The network already has one new scripted series on tap for next season, HANNIBAL, which I hear may go for midseason. With the network in such bad shape after years of neglect and bad decisions by previous regimes, NBC seems to have cast a very wide net this season, developing a vast range of projects that are all over the map, making it harder to handicap. On the drama side, mystery MIDNIGHT SUN and the Jekyll & Hyde-esque DO NO HARM are getting some solid early buzz. The Jason Katims/Jason Ritter medical drama COUNTY, which just wrapped, also has been getting positive feedback. Western-esque THE FRONTIER, which is shooting in Australia, is getting notices for its rich look. Comedy-wise, ANIMAL KINGDOM is hot, as is White House family comedy 1600 PENN, despite a last-minute recasting, as well as the Matthew Perry starrer GO ON and Greg Daniels’ FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER. The network also is high on a couple of multi-camera comedies, the untitled KARI LIZER and JIMMY FALLON projects, with TABLE FOR THREE also looking encouraging so far. The Ryan Murphy/Ali Adler blended family comedy THE NEW NORMAL is still shooting but, with the auspices involved, it is considered a strong contender. NBC brass seem to like the SARAH SILVERMAN pilot, which had an early order, but Silverman is considered acquired taste, so a lot will depend on testing.
The KEVIN WILLIAMSON project was very strong at the script stage, got even stronger with the casting of Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy, and seems to be sailing through production. Meanwhile the untitled KARYN USHER teen-spy drama, which also was an early standout during the script phase, then hit a speed bump in casting the lead, which took a very long time, now appears to be in great shape, with newcomer Saxon Sharbino getting strong reviews. The Williamson and Karyn projects seem to be the top drama contenders at the moment, with Fox’s other female CIA agent pilot, THE ASSET, right behind them and GUILTY and BERMAN/WRIGHT further down at the moment. Off-cycle pilot LITTLE BROTHER, whose plug almost got pulled after difficulties casting one of the leads, is making early waves on the comedy side. I hear Fox brass are impressed by John Stamos and his chemistry with TJ Miller. Also getting solid early buzz is the comedy EL JEFE, about a privileged young man moving in with his Latina nanny, and the MINDY KALING medical office comedy, mostly because of its star/creator Kaling. I’ve been hearing some mixed early buzz on half-hour pilots LIKE FATHER and LIVING LOADED, but with A-list auspices Bill Lawrence and Rob McElhenney behind them, judgement has to be held until they are completed.
High-profile drama pilots RALPH LAMB and ELEMENTARY look very good early on. In addition to strong buzz, period drama Ralph Lamb boasts a cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Michael Chiklis, Jason O’Mara, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Elementary already has fans buzzing about the tweaks the network is making to the classic Sherlock Holmes franchise with this contemporary update. Despite the difficulties casting the lead (Rachelle Lefevre eventually got the role in second position to A Gifted Man), I hear mom-turned-PI drama pilot APPLEBAUM has strong support at the network, with another female procedural, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced TROOPER, about a mom-turned-state trooper, also getting early buzz. On the comedy side, after a casting tweak after the table read, PARTNERS looks good, while reaction to DORF/FALCONE has been mixed. Most of CBS’ comedy pilot are very late, so not much intel here.
Like NBC, ABC may already have a series for next season. Soap MISTRESSES, which was ordered straight-to-series for summer 2013, is filming a pilot episode with the regular ABC pilots, and I hear it will get consideration for launch next season, which is what ABC did with midseason entry Missing, originally ordered for summer. When Mistresses will premiere may depend on how ABC’s five soapy pilots, SCRUPLES, AMERICANA, NASHVILLE, DEVIOUS MAIDS and GILDED LILYS turn out. So far, I hear strong buzz on Gilded Lilys, though all five boast top auspices and/or big-name actors. ABC’s fantasy/supernatural pilots 666 PARK AVE, GOTHAM and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST look in good shape early on, especially 666 Park Ave, which is hot. The question is whether the network will pick up only one of them as a companion for Once Upon A Time. In the testosterone minority of ABC’s drama slate, the Shawn Ryan/Karl Gajdusek’s LAST RESORT is showing promise, while buzz on the Roland Emmerich/Harold Kloser project has been mixed. On the comedy side, PRAIRIE DOGS, the raunchy AWESOMETOWN and Claudia Lonow’s family comedy HOW TO LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE are getting strong early buzz. Also, Reba McEntire is a big audience draw, making her sitcom MALIBU COUNTRY an automatic contender.
If there is such thing as sure thing so early, the CW’s ARROW and THE CARRIE DIARIES would be it. They have pre-sold titles and are already making a lot of noise. Both were solid pre-production, received mostly favorable reaction to the fist images of the title characters released last month, and the strong buzz continues. Another pilot with a instantly recognizable title, BEAUTY & THE BEAST, also has been garnering buzz, while medical drama FIRST CUT has had people raving about Meryl Streep’s daughter Mamie Gummer who plays the lead. And then there is a pilot, whose chances improved over the last two weeks for reasons completely unrelated to the actual pilot — THE SELECTION. In picking it up, the network took a page from its own playbook several years ago, when, on the heels of the success of the first Twilight movie, the network ordered to pilot the similarly-themed Vampire Diaries. This year, the CW did the same with the Hunger Games-esque THE SELECTION in anticipation that the movie would be big. The film indeed has been an instant smash, boosting the chances of The Selection.

You’re not the only one raving about XX’s performance in FIRST CUT! She/he is amazing!
I hope first cut gets picked up as well. But Arrow and The Selection are my top 2 choices.
Agree! Arrow & The Selection are my top choices, mainly because The Hunger Games became one of my favorite movies ever! Also waiting for Beauty and the Beast and Shelter.
You should all be rooting for Usher’s pilot! It’s one of the few with legs.
I hope Beauty and the Beast,Arrow, and the Selection all get picked up by CW.
Does anyone know where I can read these??
Reading this a year from now… so crazy!
Is there any buzz on The CW’s Cult?
Seems like a pretty good round-up. My own two cents, however, I thought “Like Father” and “How to Live…” were very weak scripts, so I am surprised they are even getting partial buzz. I personally enjoyed “Goodwin Games” and am a bit bummed to not see it on here.
I couldn’t disagree more about Like Father. It was my favorite half hour of this season and I know more than a few people who feel the same way.
How to live… okay, agreed. And I did enjoy Goodwin. Not How I Met Your Mother good, but good still.
Ditto on Goodwin Games. Well written script, wonderful creative cast, and is hilarious. The game’s should keep the audience captivated.
Nellie thanks!!!
I Love “Primetime pilot panic” and since then i had my favorite and i hope their become series next season.
Fox: Kevin Williamson i`m looking for
CW: Slection i think is safe bet.. hey Hunger Games is monster at box office
Nothing about NBC’s Steven Bochco and David Milch legal drama? Or Bochco’s other project, ABC’s Legal Affairs?
Both are moving forward this year, duh.
Why no mention of The CW’s Joey Dakota and Shelter?
in production
what about the pilot Shelter CW helmed by Mark Schwann and JJ Abrams,Schwanns magic pen coming off 9 seosons of One Tree Hill and JJ Abrams impecable track record?
well cos no one cares.
The Selection and Arrow is definitely being picked up.
The casting across Beauty and the Beast, First Cut and Carrie Diaries are all amazing.
Beauty and the Beast and Carrie Diaries already have an inbuilt fanbase.
The Cult was picked up much much earlier than the rest of the pilots probably because the network really liked the direction of the film.
No matter how good or great the producers are behind Shelter and Joey Dakota, they’re no match for the other pilots. Especially since Arrow, Selection, Carrie Diaries and Beauty and the Beast have such high chances of being picked up.
You’re a fool, Sam.
Yes to Carrie Diaries, and probably yes to Arrow. & If the execution on Arrow isn’t good and it looks cheap, then forget it. B&theB doesn’t have a built-in fan base! From what? From the old fairy tale? From the Disney movie? & Nobody cares about Chris Egan. & What makes the First Cut casting amazing? That they got Meryl Streep’s daughter? She’s no Meryl Streep.
& the Selection? It’s a cheap, cheap imitation of Hunger Games. & Not nearly as exciting. & Not nearly as good. I would bet on Carrie, Arrow, and then maybe Shelter, Cult, First Cut, and Joey D.
Dont be lame. you’re the idiot. Arrow is one of cw’s biggest pilot, they dont need high tech toys, the down to earth hero is what people wants. but the cast has said that there are already expensive 500k mercedes used as props. plus with the huge success of hunger games, everyone wants more archers around. As for selection, its way too obvious itll be picked up cos of thg and you know who everyone said the same thing about tvd being a cheap imitation. look at it now. Carrie diaries – i dun even need to mention how likely itll be picked. As for beauty and the beast, lol, have you not seen the fanpage on facebook of the 90s tv show. people are still crazy abt the show and the books and no, its not related to the disney movie. First cut has mamie gumer and like it or not, she already got more buzz than all the other non popular actors in the other shows because she is meryl streeps daughter. plus all the good reviews from the good wife. plus justin hartley is starring in first cut as well. Hartley being in 4 years of smallville, the network’s 2nd most popular show, and at times the most watched show by 18-39 at that timeslot. Also Greys Anatomy’s success gives this tv show a much higher chance of getting picked up. Shelter would probably rank 5th or 6th at the chances of it being picked up.
Beauty and The Beast is the one with Kristin Kreuk
Beauty and The Beast has Kristin Kreuk who is one of the more popular WB/CW actors
you sir, just made me laugh out loud- best opening line today. Happy Easter
Or was those just scripts orders, not pilots?
At least Bob Greenblatt is taking an edgier approach to broadcast tv with shows like Hannibal and The Frontier.
When do execs at NBC, or anywhere for that matter, stop getting a pass on the sins of others and start taking responsibility for their own development? I mean come on, this is Bob G’s 3rd season and still not a show to be found that means anything. This is a subjective business of taste and instinct and an understanding of cultural zeitgeist. Execs need to get out of their fish bowl and their beemers and start looking for ideas and writers who have something to say. The whole industry, and NBC more than mos, need to find new voices, not another series from JJ or Bochco or Steven Spielberg! There is no passion in any of that work anymore and the buys have more to do with maintaining personal friendships for everything from Bar Mitzvah’s to vacations in Wailea. It takes courage to be bold, to break form, to give an audience an unexpected end result. I was speaking to as art guy who used the word counterintuitive a lot and I started to understand what the word meant in the context of storytelling. There’s nothing to indicate courage in this ‘Panic’ post, but we can hope.
Frontier looks great. That’s the kind of drama NBC should be doing if it wants to return to the top. Ditch reality carp and keep delivering good shows from established writers/directors. The comedy slate is fairly strong, but NBC needs to take a chance on some flagship dramas.
Wow,you gave me a lot to process! First of all-I hope something, anything at all from that list works for Nbc,as,they are such a mess right now. Wouldn’t hold out hopes for any Fox pilots doing great. With Terra Nova cancelled, the finder?,Alcatraz? Those pilots better be damn good.Besides Once upon a time-Abc needs something else succeeding on Sunday nights. Hopefully that “Maids” show will get viewers, but, who knows. As far as the CW-maybe,just maybe one of these pilots will get REAL demo ratings. Not a 0.5,.0.6,0.7 because that s**t is f**k*n ridiculous!!!
NBC should bring back Bent for a season 2 sampling. It was the highest executed comedy of all their new ones this season. NBC pilots have to be quality from the get go since they have a really fractured core audience that does not trust their brand.
Hopefully ABC picks up Last Resort. A year and half is too long to go without a Shawn Ryan show. Still not over how Fox idiotically canceled The Chicago Code. Now Fox is experience serious karma. Now that their new shows Terra Nova, Alcatraz, and The Finder(enjoy somewhat) have all flopped in the ratings.
As for CBS tried 2 Broke Girls then gave during mid season. Also fell behind on P.O.I. Ralph Lamp Pilot seem like it’s the only interesting drama pilot.
The CW seems to be making some decent moves this pilot season and programming season. LA Complex is surprisingly good and if it does well should move to being a summer show next year. Mamie Gummer is a good actress, she is solid on The Good Wife so I am not surprised she is getting some positive buzz. I worry about the rest of the cast though. I wonder whats getting cancelled, and hope GG comes back for a 13 episode final season. 22 is way too much. Better yet 7 episodes could be even better.
Broadcast TV … primetime used to be so special and much anticipated, now it’s just painful. I want to like shows like “Smash” but there’s no chemistry, the arcs are dull, and despite is “Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg” allure, the show’s musical numbers are simply not as interesting as those featured in “Glee.” Bob Greenblatt and Paul Lee are going to face some tough times with May’s upfronts, an interesting TCA tour this summer, expensive marketing campaigns, and disappointing ratings come fall.
Will the networks finally try something different with the “traditional” season schedule? I think now is the time to stop with the stretching out 22 eps to 8 months nonsense. Just air them all straight through, and then premiere new crops of shows, perhaps 15 eps. there is really no reason for all these repeats, and they have to deal with the decline in viewership after daylight saving kick in anyway.
I so agree with this! They should get look at cable. Stretching 22 episodes for 8 months is ridiculous in these times. I prefer watching shows on cable because they do not treat viewers like s word.
You are so right about this. I’ve wondered the same thing. Maybe the nets should take a page from the BBC playbook. Their series normally run to fewer than a dozen episodes and then the schedule is filled with something fresh. Wish we could go that route. Trying to follow a scripted series that goes away for weeks at a time is nuts. “The Good Wife” is a perfect example.
ABC would be dumb to pick up the Roland Emmerich pilot. Maybe one of the worst written pilots (filmed) ever.
Agreed… I honestly thought that was a joke when I first read it. So horribly written.
Yes, clearly Dean Devlin was the “writer” during their earlier years.
Guilty stars some of my favorite stars Cuba Gooding Jr and Sharon Leal. I look forward to seeing that as a series. Long overdue!!
I agree I am totally interested in GUILTY…666 Park Ave too
Yes, very excited for GUILTY!
666 Park Avenue was a really BORING script and has very little to do with the book it’s “based” on. Can’t imagine any more interesting on screen.
Reba’s new show is a shoo-in for pickup to series, since Reba’s a big draw. Some promising shows from each of the networks….
Cool. LAST RESORT and the Williamson pilot were the absolute best pilots I read this year. 666 PARK was terrific too.
Where did you read the pilots? And is there any way you would be able to share them if I provided m e-mail address?
yes
How? I would LOVE to read them!
Gotham was way more interesting than 666 Park Ave. I compare them because they are in competition at ABC
I disagree. Gotham was good but a little networky/conventional. 666 Park had moments I genuinely didn’t expect, like the “elevator door” scene and little, creepy moments like Gavin breathing on her neck. I was more invested in the 666 Park characters, too.
Not a fan of medical dramas but I hope County does well. Jason Ritter is just so likable.
Sounds like the CW will be cancelling a lot of shows this spring. I hope Supernatural is one of them. It’s gotten so painfully bad.
However compared to the other shows on the network (sans TVD), its ratings are surprisingly solid. And I’m enjoying this season, so there are viewers who don’t see it as bad let alone painfully bad.
It’s too bad Supernatural couldn’t have ended with dignity a few years ago. Now it’s just embarrassing. You feel sorry for the actors having to mouth that garbage.
Partners is terrible.
It really is. Can’t believe they made it again. Gets worse every time.
I was at the taping, and thought it was hilarious.
Partners is actually really good. The cast works very well together. The cut I saw looks like a winner.
it’s dreadful
you must be a hater. i was at the taping as well. very funny. cast is stellar. Partners is a hit.
“Partners is a hit”
And now you’ve revealed yourself to be a plant and a liar.
will NEVER see the air
I’m encouraged by the early buzz. Several pilots that I’m rooting for seem to be doing fairly well. I’m still hoping to see some positive news about Cult (CW), Beautiful People (NBC), Revolution (NBC), Penoza (ABC) and Baby Big Shot (CBS).
Agreed. Hearing good things abt all of these. Especially baby big shot.
Baby Big Shot, the script at least, was awful. Scenes of the main character basically wandering around and going “Rowr!” at men. Lame, retrograde, embarrassing. Even the title is embarrassing. *Especially* the title.
Anyone hear anything about Beautiful People on NBC? Script was pretty cool – curious how it turned out?
I love Mindy Kaling and she has a great cast and a great script…
Thanks Mindy! We liked your script too… just not you.
Mindy’s pilot is amazing. It landed at Fox, where people will actually see it.
“Martin,” have you met “Oliver,” who posted below? You both attempted the same lame defense of Kaling 3 minutes apart.
In other words… Hi, Mindy!
P.S. Your show is still horrible.
Did you hear her Marc Maron interview? Wow. Ugh.
They’re really ginning her up to be something, huh? I don’t get the Mindy Kaling hype. Can anyone enlighten me?
She hired three separate publicists to press-release everything short of a bowel movement. It’s Hollywood hype on steroids, and it’s made her overexposed before she was ever actually famous. A rare feat.
Meanwhile, John Malkovich’s production company, which bought the screenplay she co-wrote — “THE LOW SELF ESTEEM OF LIZZIE GILLESPIE” — replaced her with Jaylynn Bailey. For some reason, Kaling didn’t press release that.
And her recent press release about Ed Helms, Bill Hader, and Richard Schiff being part of her new show was an artfully worded lie: those actors are appearing only in the PILOT.
Has anyone ever seen a triple-stunt-casted PILOT before? That kind of stuff is usually saved for season five, after the writers run out of ideas (e.g. THE OFFICE (U.S. version)).
What an insidious post. Mindy, if you are reading this, I am scared for you. You have an obsessed hater out there.
I couldn’t agree more on the Mindy Kaling comments. I just don’t get the hype. I wish her no ill – I just don’t see any there there. As an actor, she has an extremely limited range. As a writer, she has yet to really make her mark or prove her worth. But the amount of publicity she gets is quite fantastic.
I was at the network run-through. I thought it was great. Michael Urie was fantastic. I hope it gets picked up.
