Is it real or Ridley Scott? It’s actually Michael Fassbender as David the robot and is the latest tease from Fox for Prometheus, Scott’s return to space. In this clip, Fassbender shows us what the latest generation of robots is capable of, both physically and emotionally. This is just the one slice of the promotional pie the studio is baking for Prometheus. In February, TED attendees were treated to a talk “from 2023” by Weyland Industries CEO Peter Weyland as played by Guy Pearce. As well as a movie trailer and social media presence, there’s a Weyland Industries website, Verizon-tied full-page ads for robots and more. Prometheus, starring Fassbender, Pearce, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba and Logan Marshall-Green, follows a team of explorers who discover an alien civilization that might hold the clue to the origins of mankind on Earth and a terrifying fate. Ugggh I want to see this movie soooo bad. The anticipation is giving me a stomach ache.
wow – haven’t seen intelligent filmmaking like that in a long time – hope it rises above the clutter and pass the test of time like Blade Runner. ridley scott for oscar – he deserves one.
IMHO, Blade Runner is one of the most over-hyped, over-rated sci-fi films ever. Aside from the visionary SFX shots/design, the film itself is dull, clunky, and obvious, an utter snooze.
Blade Runner isn’t solely about sci-fi and action, it’s about the human condition. Some people just don’t get it, and yes, it’s brilliant.
Sci-fi is a lot harder to do than horror, from a story perspective, methinks. Take a technological idea, apply it to a futuristic society, and portray the effects on that society as a metaphor for some present-day social issue and you’ve got a movie people will talk about thirty years later. In the case of Bladerunner, the technology looked and sounded like people, the condition it portrayed allegorically was slavery or segregation or racism, and the end result was awesome, old directing style and FX notwithstanding. So yeah, I’m looking forward to Prometheus for sure, but I’m really curious to see what they do with a Bladerunner franchise…
how could a movie that bombed when it was released be considered “over-hyped”? studios usually distance themselves from a bomb, and not spend any more money in ads. the hype, if you can call it that, came many years after the film was released, because people learned to appreciate it, and came to a consensus that it is a good movie. your complaint that it is boring was actually the complaint of many people when the film first came out, but many of those same people (critics) actually changed their minds as time passed. you may yet change your mind in the future.
Fine, but it’s not the ’80s, it’s 2012, and in this day and age Blade Runner *is* overhyped. For my money, while Blade Runner has more of a “world” to obsess over, Alien is the far better film.
David would make the perfect studio or network executive. He can do anything a human exec can but without the bother of a nagging conscience. He can be programmed to work at maximum effectiveness without those pesky ethics. Where humans would recoil from being told to do something unethical or unlawful David would be happy to do the dirty work.
& lack of morality or ethics is different from actual studio/network executives how???
As David is not human, its not possible to make a class action law suit against him. If his decisions cause loss of life, since he is a machine then it be argued that it was an industrial accident. Perfection.
VPoPDW is saying exactly that: there is no difference.
This movie is going to be huge. Great marketing move! Great way to get the fans hyped up. Keep it up!
I just had a flashback to all the nightmares Ash from Alien gave me. I am so seeing this movie!
Halfway clever, but why would they try to sell the product by placing it in front of two scary robot skulls, and showing it stirring ominously in plastic wrap and packing pellets? As I recall from the Isaacson biography, the detailed-obsessed Steve Jobs threw a legendary tantrum when Chiat\Day pitched their “iPad: It Will Murder You As You Sleep” campaign.
That is idiotic — it depends on the audience for the video. If it’s pitched to corporate CEO’s looking for someone to do their dirty work, then it should be a degree scary. Of course, since it’s actually selling a movie and not a commercial for an ipad, it doesn’t matter — it’s really cool and original which is what counts.
Indeed, those skulls are winking at us.
Because they’re not selling a robot, they’re selling a movie.
Nice post
This marketing campaign is genius. Slowly building and gathering up everyone in its path with awesome content. And the Verizon thing is cool too. Getting them to be part of the fake products is awesome
Well, that could have been done so much better by playing it more grounded and true to what an ACTUAL presentation of David could have been. Which, would have been scarier as opposed to TELEGRAPHING the important moments – let us discover them.
Missed opportunities.
This is genius. Normally I don’t know what they’re smoking over there at Fox, but this video and the way they introduced it was textbook brilliance. Others should take note. I have a feeling this film is going to have phat inertia in two months…
Introducing the next generation Weinsteins:
“What can you do, Harvey?”
“I can carry out directives, that my human counterparts might find…distressing…or unethical.”
Where can I order my own little Fassbender?
So beautiful? so charming, so creepy. That cute David will strangle you in your sleep if he will think that this is necessary. He looks like more charming version of Ash.
Very creepy. I imagine if Stanley Kubrick were still alive that’s EXACTLY how he would want a robot to be played. Prometheus must have the best ensemble cast for a sci-fi movie since…Alien.
Fassbender chooses such a wide array of characters, and he most often is terrific bringing these to the screen.
Don’t know about Prometheus (yet)…but, Fassbender gets my interest.
ugh this looks SO good
so despite tom rothman’s genius announcement that prometheus is not an alien prequel, the robot company is the same in both films. plus, now we can add kubrick to the mix with this hal 9000 rip off. oh well, if you’re gonna steal, steal from the best.
Have you not read? Its the same universe and there will be alien ties, which not shocking considering again, same universe. Its exploring the space jockey culture and at least as far as we know, will not be featuring the xenomorphs. But its not set right before alien or within a few decades of it. The company has yet to become the Weyland-Yutani Corp., which is actually the the corporation in the Alien films dumbass. If you noticed it only said Weyland industries. Looks awesome to me. Have been a big fan for years.
I am so much looking forward to this movie. Brilliant campaign. This has the thumbprint of Ridley Scott, British Commercials King all over it. But it’s kind of creepy that Verizon is a partner with “Weyland” on this. But a tour de force vision melting the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction. BTW @ ILM, you are so fundamentally wrong about “Blade Runner” on so many levels. But I’ll take the bait: just what do you think is a classic science fiction movie that ISN’T “Dull, clunky and an utter snooze”?
Can we amend the rules and award acting Oscars for viral videos?
Michael Fassbender is amazing actor. I cant wait see it.
That was really great. I love how they’re blending reality with fiction in the promotional campaign. Fassbender is an amazing talent, and his performance in this clip is very creepy, but in the best possible way.
That’s one of my most vivid memories of the original Alien….the tone of it. Yes, it had all the elements of a great movie with the script and the visuals, but Scott and his team really took you there. It was horrifying, and creepy, and claustrophobic, and……SO GOOD!!
This clip makes me think we’ll be getting another great installment. Needless to say, I can’t wait for this movie.
