Camouflaging the word “bitch” in the title didn’t fool the Parents Television Council. The watchdog is up in arms over what it deems is “offensive content” on ABC’s new comedy Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, which premiered last week. According to the PTC, “the program is a sexist mixed-bag of hedonism, drug-use, alcohol abuse (including the main character plying a 13-year-old boy with alcohol to get him drunk) and explicit levels of promiscuity that are shocking even by today’s broadcast TV standards.” The organization’s primary targets are the show’s main advertisers, AT&T and Volkswagen.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

I’m sold. I will now be a regular viewer if this show. Thanks for bringing it to my attention PTC.

Thank you, PTC for that rave review that will no doubt turn a mediocre sitcom into a huge hit. ABC will be thrilled by the publicity and ratings boost.
How wretched that we live in a world where they are yet to invent a way not to watch a show you personally don’t care for!
I’m crying as I type . . .
Sorry. That was meant for Flo DiBona, down yonder.
It’s a funny show and Krysten Ritter is clearly a star…
But her character does advocate some high-risk behavior. Which is fine at 9:30PM, but ABC insists on putting her recklessness into their promos, which run at all hours.
Young women, say nine-to-fourteen, can be pretty impressionable when searching for an identity. A jaded 30 year old sit-com writer doesn’t intend the character to be a role model for anyone, but…
Wow, this criticism alone just got me interested in watching this show. I look forward to it.
It is disgusting how Disney/ABC feels this sort of programming is 1) what viewers want, 2)what viewers deserve, and 3) in any way, shape, or form, appropriate. Just one more reason to NEVER tune in to Disney/ABC! I am normally SO against censorship, but PTC in this case, has too valid a point!
Really you think censorship is needed? If you don’t like something than don’t watch it. It is that simple, Flo. If you are on the side of the PTC, you are on the wrong side.
Sorry to dys your utopia but with an attitude like that you come off as a ’60s idealist who’s closed his eyes to every consequence that’s occurred since.
I think you meant “1760s idealist”.
Consequence? What consequence has ever come from freedom of speech and expression? The only consequences come from Nazi (yes, in this case the term is appropriate) organizations like the PTC and any calls for censorship. You are FREE to change the channel. Remember freedom? The PTC doesn’t want you to have it. They want to make decisions for you? Why do they deserve that right?
Appropriate? The PTC is rounding up religious and ethnic groups and exterminating them in concentration camps?
Shame on you, AJ. Calm down on the rhetoric a bit.
There is never any validity to anything the Parent Trash Cult says, considering that they paid Vince McMahon $3.5 million and publicly apologized to him to settle a defamation lawsuit filed against them.
It’s always funny when someone is “normally so against censorship”… except when it’s about something they personally dislike.
Yeah! Censorship is wrong, unless it’s something I don’t approve of – then its ok.
Wow.
If you haven’t looked lately, There are a lot more risque shows on basic cable, that makes this show looked tamed. If the networks can’t compete with cable, you can forget about free TV.
You must have your head in the sand to think that people don’t watch these shows with adult themes. Not all of care for watching kid friendly show after 9:00 PM. I don’t want to raise your kids. Besides, that remote makes it real easy to change the channel these days without getting out of your chair.
You know how ABC can decide if this is what viewers want? Ratings… if people watch it, that means people want it. If they don’t watch, they don’t want it. It’s really a very simple concept.
This show is no more or less offensive than a lot of shows on TV, and the word BITCH is totally inoffensive as it means “female dog.”
I’m starting to wonder if the PTC is actually controlled by the networks and actually used as a sly way of creating buzz for a show by turning it into forbidden fruit.
Not to mention the fact that the pilot was VERY tame (to the point where the title seemed just stunt-y) —- why must you guys post every time PTC releases a press release against a show?! The advertisers rarely, if ever, pull their sponsorship over these pushes. So where’s the news in a tiny, angry lobbying group with no real power in the Hills or on the Hill?
I have been saying all along if you name a show with a curse word in it so.e were along the ling you a going to make some group out there unhappy and you are going to have to possibly change the name or something so why don’t from the get go do developers avoid naming their shows with curse words in the titles it common sense this show should have been called prom the get go Apt.23. What’s wrong with that title? Oh an as for the main charactor getting a 13 year old boy drunk that was pushing the limit a little bit but it wasn’t that big of a deal in my point of view it just shows just how much of an irresponsible bitch that charactor is.
I totally had no interest in this show, but now that the PTC has brought these issues to my attention, I will most definitely be tuning in.
PTC has a point. This show is trashily over the top.
and there is such a thing as a remote. You just change the channel. They don’t have a point. They have control issues
What’s wrong with changing the channel?? Go away PTC!
The PTC needs to go after all the shows blowing peoples heads off. Everytime I turn on the TV some guy is pulling a trigger and spraying human flesh all over the place. Why is it, nobody has a problem with blantant violence and loss of life, but the second a woman shows a little nip, or says a bad word, parents are up in arms? Makes zero sense to me. We should be able to see naked women cussing like sailors and never see violent men killing each other.
Perhaps if kids saw more love making and less homicides….
I think the reason is, a lot of people in groups like the PTC and religious group who organize against shows and films for language and sex do not have healthy sex lives, which leads to pent up anger making them take it out on the depiction of sex, and this builds into violent tendancies in themselves, like beating their wives (physcially and mentally).
Good point. It never ceases to amaze me how certain Americans are more outraged by sex than violence.
When I worked at a video store (remember those?) a parent, at the store with their grade school kids, asked me if a particular R-rated movie had any sex in it. I was briefly surprised and answered told them no, but that it had violence. The parent couldn’t care less as long as there was no sex. Unbelievable.
Though all these parents have to do is spread the word to other parents that this show has offensives stuff in and to not let there kids watch it and then viewership declines and letthe show die that way
Though I really don’t care I Mindanao of enjoyed the show I’m not the biggest fan of the black haired girl but whatever
*kinda*
I don’t know what my keyboard was trying to do
I thought the show was very funny. It airs at 9:30 right? What is PTC worried about? As an adult, i wasn’t offended. And as a parent, my kid shouldn’t be watching that program anyhow. Get a life PTC.
*shocking even by today’s broadcast tv standards* Really? Doesn’t this group ever quit. With some of the garbage on tv these days,I had no idea there were any standards left. Have they even noticed the “standards” of a few Cbs comedies. It is up to parents to decide what their kids do or do not watch. Let’s face the facts-kids & teenagers see much stronger things on the internet these days. And whether we like it or not-kids know all about sex. That’s the world we live in. These PTC people should stop telling us what we can or can’t watch. I personally don’t watch Don’t trust the b,but, people should have the option to decide 4 themselves. Last point- what the hell ISN’T offensive & sexist on tv these days?
Thanks PTC for the heads up. I liked the pilot and will continue to watch!
Yeah, I hadn’t even heard of it, but sounds funny. You know, like make believe comedy… which isn’t real life. Get off the computer and raise your kids.
It’s on at 9:30. Put your kids to bed.
Or, risk them seeing brief censored nudity, and a bunch of sex jokes they won’t understand.
The PTC’s real problem — jokes about women masturbating. Sure, it’s fine if it’s a guy, but heaven forbid if there are references to women doing it.
This show is extremely vulgar and I can totally see how it would be offensive to some. To those individuals I would say, “don’t watch it and don’t let your children watch it.” There. Problem solved.
I saw the pilot a year ago and it was the first network sitcom that actually got me excited in years. Because it was aimed at adults and not 13 year olds. It felt more like a FX show than an ABC show. I haven’t watched the aired version yet but I’ll be shocked and extremely happy if it’s not hacked to pieces from the version I saw.
The show is kinda risque and I like it, but it feels way out of place on the same night as The Middle, Suburgatory and Modern Family.
Did you see the last episode of Suburgatory? It was sex, sex, sex.
I love this show. It’s absurdist and deals with a heightened reality. If folks aren’t mature enough to watch it with that understanding, perhaps they shouldn’t be watching TV at all.
Congrats to Natch and the whole Apt. 23 crew! You pissed off PTC. Your show must be great!
This is why the Big 4 are getting less and less ratings!… stupid groups like the PTC
ABC should sue the PTC for false advertising. ‘Don’t Trust the B’ is nowhere near as interesting and entertaining as the PTC release would lead you to believe…
tonight’s episode is laugh out loud funny. i don’t think the PTC has even seen the show, they are probably just objecting to the title.
Has the PTC been asleep at the wheel when it comes to ABC on Wednesday nights? They have no “criticism” of Happy Endings, which is certainly quite a bit more crass and sexual compared to Apt. 23, down to the freakin’ title, and has already been around for a year! I love that show myself, but I can safely say that with this show’s timeslot and concept, both these are definite adult shows. What kid is going to be excited about watching a show involving a con artist and James Van Der Beek, someone they have no idea about? Also, it’s pretty stupidly clear that the “13 year-old” kid was played by a 22 year-old guy and the scene was comedically exaggerated.
