UPDATE: Insiders at the studio tell me that James Cameron might have made a slightly humorous off handed comment about a Prometheus sequel on the red carpet, but it’s not true he’s planning a Prometheus sequel; this falls into the April Fool’s category as I surmised in the original post. He’s too busy with Avatar sequels to consider anything else. Some Deadline commenters said the entire Guardian piece was based on a hoax story. What fun.
EARLIER: Here is a shocker. James Cameron tells The Guardian that after making a groundbreaking sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic film Alien, he now says he wants to make the sequel to Prometheus, Scott’s return to that hallowed ground. The proximity to April Fools always heightens one’s skepticism, but Cameron was out stumping for the 3D conversion of Titanic and when the journalist, Henry Barnes, directly quotes Cameron, you’ve got to pay attention. “There’s a gap of a few years between Prometheus and the original Alien,” Cameron told The Guardian. “That gap is meant for me to answer all the questions raised in Prometheus.”
There was a seven year gap between Scott’s film and Cameron’s sequel Aliens, and there might be that kind of time gap if this really goes forward. After all, Cameron committed to make two more installments of his all-time box office champ Avatar for Fox, when that studio pried him away from directing Cleopatra for Sony Pictures with Angelina Jolie starring. Fox releases Prometheus on June 8. Trying to find out more about this.

Why can’t he make a kick ass sequel to aliens instead with sigourney weaver????
I would love to see another Aliens with Ripley again. She has been killed off a couple of times in other not so good Alien movies. She is not quite as svelte as Ripley once was. Maybe a real adviser and not packin so much bad ass fire power!
I’d kill to watch Alien 5 with Sigourney Weaver, I’d just kill. Why FOX doesn’t want to greenlight Alien 5? Is it because Sigourney is a woman in her 60s? Harrison Ford was almost seventy when he did Indy 4 and Siggy can still kick ass like no one else.
you dont think Fox would greenlight Alien 5 if James Cameron volunteered to write/direct it?
you bet your butt they would
Cameron was going to produce part 5 with Ridley Scott directing it. But Cameron told Fox that if they made AvP he would refuse to be a part of the franchise anymore. Fox made their decision.
At least Scott came back after all these years.
No they wouldn’t infact he did come in with a script for Alien 5 back in 2005 but they rather wanted to do Alien Vs Predator, i’m pretty saticefied with Prometheus though i don’t get why peope are so pissed about it, but in the neer furture Shaw need’s to team up with Ripley and in sci-fi that’s possible.
No kidding. Alien 4 should’ve begun with Ripley waking up in the Sulaco cryo-tube while running her hand through her hair to make sure its still there and then telling Hicks and Bishop about the messed dream she had.
Sorry Jim but I’d rather see Ridley answer those questions.
He deserves to do a sequel to this film you go make True Lies 2.
C’mon give the guy a break. Aliens as a sequel is right behind only Godfather 2 and Empire Strikes Back.
You can diss Jim about Titanic and Avatar – but do not mess with Aliens. One of the all time great sequels.
Maybe 15 years ago, but this is not the same man who made Terminator and Aliens, this is the new and improved Cameron. He can make the next Aliens about how mankind is encrouching on the Aliens enviroment and lecture the humans to simply give in to being living incubators. Only when we embrace the face hugger can we truely understand the damage we are causing to acid based life forms.

I thought we were still pretending Prometheus wasn’t an Alien prequel. I guess I need to stay on top of these things better.
Have I died and gone to heaven?
Cameron may have made the comment in jest, but the idea of doing a sequel to Prometheus is something that’s grounded in history.
Years ago, right after Cameron made Aliens, he said he’d return to the franchise and do the fourth film if Ridley Scott made the third one. That never happened, so Cameron turned away from the series, which just kept getting worse and worse with III (thanks, Fincher) and Resurrection (thanks, Whedon).
Depending on how exactly Scott’s film turns out (and whether the box office merits a sequel, and how badly Scott wants to make that sequel, as opposed to working on say, Blade Runner 2) I could see Cameron being tempted back to the Aliens universe.
Has no one clocked that this has to be an April Fools!
Aliens and more to do with the book Starship Troopers than the movie that was made of that name.
And how about a sequel to The Abyss, that is actually an original from Cameron.
Maybe he was joking, but the fact he said it shows he has at least been thinking about it. Personally, I hope he gives up making more Avatar crap and makes Prometheus 2 his next project.
This was a joke. Not real news.
So, I am confused. Is this or does this have anything to do with the Alien movie’s?
He was kidding. Time to put this article down.
Cameron was quoted in the 80s as saying he would not make Alien 3. But he did say “get Ridley to do Alien 3 and then I will do Alien 4.” I think he’s just jokingly reiterating that statement. I wouldn’t hold your breath for “PROMETHEUS’S.”
I admire a lot of what James Cameraon has accomplished but if I was him I would have refrained from commenting on this franchise. As the years pass Alien still holds up while Aliens shows its age. If it was me I would like keep comparisons of the two films far from people’s minds as possible.
I can hardly wait for Prometheus to come out just so that I will know if it is a prequel or not. I mean, if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck, will it be a turkey? Dud, but still. This movie sounds too much like a prequel to not be one.
Hey anonymous – good one. LMAO reading that.
Obviously a joke but with Cameron’s penchant for arrogance it’s not surprising he’d want to piddle in Scott’s punch bowl.
This was an April Fool’s gag- NOT a comment Cameron made. Everyone’s just trying to cover their butts on this now.
The story was an April Fool’s joke.
I’m fairly certain he was goofing. If it was true though, holy shitballs.
I say get Jim to make another Aliens movie and nuke the Avatar sequels from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
What would the sequel be called? Prometheuser? Prometheuses?
“Aliens – Prometheuses” sounds like it could work with Cameron.
He likes things that are plural he needs lots of things going on.
I like the way this article has done no research at all considering Cameron never told anyone at the Guardian anything so there is no way they could have a “direct quote”. This was all sourced by the Guradian from an April Fools joke on another site who the Guardian then quoted as fact without clicking on the source link which went to an April Fools gif. I also wonder who the insiders were who said he was making a joke since he never made the comments to begin with.
I posted the very same thing last night but they deleted it, much like they deleted all the comments that first pointed out that it was an April’s fools joke. This is pathetic ass covering, why lie about insiders (considering, as you say, he never made the comments AT ALL) and delete all the comments pointing out their error? Just admit you got duped, Deadline, there’s no shame in it.
As much as I like Aliens, it doesn’t come close to matching Alien. Keep Cameron off this franchise please. Stick to what you’re good at, e.g Blue things, explosions, and sinking ships.
Err, they did make a sequel to Aliens with Sigourney Weaver in it. It was called Alien 3.
Um. April fools joke anyone??
Oh god. Avatar sucked.
