Los Angeles-based Rilean Pictures has acquired the remake rights to Eric Rohmer’s Le Beau Mariage (A Good Marriage). Rilean partners Jonathan Saba and Juan Iglesias will write and produce. Iglesias most recently co-wrote and executive produced AMC’s The Trivial Pursuits of Arthur Banks starring Jeffrey Tambor, Adam Goldberg and Pete Chekvala. The late Rohmer was one of the influential French New Wave directors including Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol and others. Originally released in 1982, Le Beau Mariage stars Béatrice Romand as Sabine, an eccentric who is fed up with being the mistress of a married man and decides it’s time to get married herself. She pursues an affluent lawyer several years her senior, setting in motion an absurd quest. Iglesias says he and Saba “feel truly indebted to Eric Rohmer and the path he helped forge for independent cinema.” Saba added they are excited to “be able to interpret Rohmer’s distinctive take on relationships and customary dry wit for an entirely new audience.”
The negotiations were handled by attorney Ryan Patterson and Iglesias and Saba for Rilean. Iglesias is represented by WME. Last month Rilean also acquired rights to develop the 1985 animated “Starchaser: The Legend of Orin, into a live action movie. Via partnership with Go Digital and Lionsgate, Rilean plans to distribute from 4 to 6 movies on VOD and digital platforms over the next 2 years, including The Trouble With Bliss starring Michael C. Hall, Brie Larson, Peter Fonda, and Lucy Liu, which also opened in limited theatrical release March 23.

Seriously? Another 80s remake? Back in the 80s, everyone moaned about how movies had gone downhill after the golden age of the 1970s. Little did they know…
Inexplicable that anyone would remake this or any Rohmer movie.
Seriously? What is it with so many reboots & remakes all over the place? Is there not anyone in Hollywood who can come up with something new? I’m sure there are young talented writers out there who are just waiting for their chance. But instead La-La Land is remaking this?!? Can you guys imagine how much worse movies will be in about 20-30 years? I say this because lots of movies nowadays suck & in the future-they’ll make reboots/remakes from our crop of movies,so,those future reboots/remakes will reeeeeeaaaaaly suck!!!
don’t mess with a masterpiece.
this is like a painter saying they’re going to redo the sistine ceiling
bad idea
David, it’s clear you’re not very familiar with Rohmer’s work. Calling Le Beau Mariage a masterpiece is a stretch to say the least. It’s a good movie, but far from how you’re describing it . If anything, this is going to bring more attention to the original and hopefully to Rohmer’s other more significant work.
You are all way off. Eric Rohmer is known for two series, most famously Six Moral Tales, and less well known, but equally significant, Comedies and Proverbs. Regardless, all his films should be remade, because his work is like watching the paint dry.
You know that will never happen. I can’t wait for when they cast Rachel McAdams in this. Guaranteed shit fest for sure.
The directors who made these movies had a distinct style, the guy who will end up helming this one, most probably won’t. You can figure out what it’ll turn out to look like.
