UPDATE: See Koch Industries’ response to Robert Greenwald’s documentary (below).
Previous: Increasingly, feature-length political documentaries are using new technology to get their films seen. You may recall that the Sarah Palin biopic The Undefeated was made available last September on video-on-demand and pay-per-view to approximately 75 million homes through major cable and satellite companies such as DirecTV, Dish Network, and Time Warner Cable. Now in time for the election cycle, liberal filmmaker Robert Greenwald is employing the same methods with his take on Koch Brothers Exposed which starts streaming on May 8th. The director of docs on Wal-Mart, Rupert Murdoch, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan takes on billionaires Charles and David Koch and their huge funding of conservative causes as well as their political advocacy group Americans for Prosperity. The film is a project of Brave New Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, and premiered in NYC on March 29th (in partnership with AlterNet). It continued to Washington DC on Monday (in partnership with Democracy for America, Campaign for America’s Future, Greenpeace, and the Advancement Project); came to Boston on Tuesday; and debuts in Los Angeles April 10th. Here’s how the film describes itself:
After more than a year of research, Greenwald’s film exposes tactics used by the Koch brothers to sway the political narrative in their favor, while illustrating the dangers of unbridled influence when in the hands of few. This includes efforts to suppress voter rights, re-segregate public schools, weaken EPA regulation, privatize Social Security, and how the Kochs’ immense echo chamber of influence comes into play.
“When I learned about the damage Charles and David Koch were doing to our democracy, I wanted to make sure more Americans understood just what these billionaire brothers were up to,” said Greenwald. “If we allow them to hide in the shadows, they can keep funding politicians and hijacking our political process with impunity—and we’ll never get justice for the 99%.”
INVESTIGATING THE KOCHS
Greenwald and his Brave New Foundation team conducted numerous interviews with people all around the country for their personal experiences on the Kochs impacting their lives; as well as extensive research into financial reports, think tanks and online videos. The results include:
The Echo Chamber of Influence – Documents and interviews unearthed by Brave New Foundation researchers illustrate a $28.4 million Koch effort that has manufactured 297 opinions and commentaries, 200 reports, 56 studies and six books distorting Social Security’s effectiveness and purpose. This is just one example of the vast industry comprised of Koch brothers’ spokespeople, front groups, think tanks, academics and elected officials, which has built a self-sustaining echo chamber to transform fringe ideas into popular mainstream public policy arguments.
Voter Suppression – Through their web of political influence, the Kochs’ have bought access to democracy’s lifeblood: free and fair elections. The Kochs’ have funded efforts to potentially thwart 21 million Americans from voting as Koch dollars helped write and propose voting suppression bills in 38 states.
Keystone XL – Koch Industries and its employees are the single largest oil and gas donors to the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Along with ample evidence linking the Kochs’ business to the Canadian tar sands, they refuse to testify in Congress about their financial interest in the controversial Keystone XL.
At the same time, the Kochs’ allies in Congress are doing their best to stonewall and remove oversight.
Re-Segregation – Americans for Prosperity – a political advocacy group founded by the Koch brothers – led the effort to remake a successful school diversity policy in Wake County, NC; which was the model framework for scores of school districts across the country. The 2009 school board election provided AFP an opportunity to lay the groundwork for candidates who advocate for re-segregation, or in Jim Crow terms “neighborhood schools.”
Cancer in Crossett – Koch Industries is among the top ten worst air polluters. And, Georgia Pacific, a Koch Industries subsidiary in Arkansas, is one of the largest manufacturers of the human carcinogen formaldehyde. While the Koch brothers wage war against safety precautions, every day this factory is dumping millions of gallons of wastewater into streams that flow near a small rural town. The surrounding area is noticeably affected by air pollution – particularly in a minority neighborhood now dying of cancer. The brave community members of Crossett give powerful testimony to how they believe their health is being ravaged by a Koch Industries plant.
Higher Education – At a time when governments are slashing higher education funding, the Charles Koch Charitable Foundation has given more than $14.39 million in grants to over 150 universities. In return, some of these campuses are required to hire candidates who adhere to Koch-defined ideological guidelines.
Mark Holden, General Counsel for Koch Industries Inc, sent Deadline this statement on Robert Greenwald:
Robert Greenwald is a fringe video maker who was recently de-funded by the George Soros-backed Democracy Alliance. Perhaps due to the fact that he lost his source of funding, Mr. Greenwald is desperately seeking attention for a new video that attacks Koch Industries, Charles Koch, and David Koch. If Mr. Greenwald’s past works are any indication, this current effort will be a partisan hatchet job that has no credibility.
Mr. Greenwald has falsely claimed that Koch is behind various voter ID laws passed by state legislatures (it isn’t), that Koch was the impetus for some Wake County, North Carolina school board decisions (it wasn’t), and that Georgia-Pacific’s Crossett, Arkansas mill is somehow linked to cancer (this is baseless). Mr. Greenwald’s statements are maliciously false and misleading, and we urge the news media not to republish them. All one really needs to know about Mr. Greenwald is revealed by a statement he made several years ago: “There is a great quote: ‘The truth is too important to let the facts get in the way.’” In his latest project, he has lived up to those words. We hope that Mr. Greenwald’s recent video is seen for what it is: a desperate attempt by an obscure video maker to make money off of the orchestrated partisan political attacks against Koch that have been going on for the past few years.

Greenwald’s been doing this with political docs for years. He made OUTFOXED in less than a year so it would be ready in time for the 2004 election. He then started a grass roots campaign via the web to get people to organize viewing parties and screen it at political fundraisers, selling over 100,000 copies, even becoming the #1 DVD at Amazon for a while.
Nice to see he’s still at it.
If Greenwald had any stones, he’d go after Soros and Immelt.
Too true! We all know both sides are guilty of the same behavior.
Emperor Koch thanks you 2 for your Contribution young Minions.
what do you mean both sides
Soros and Immelt haven’t given an entire town cancer.
If YOU had any stones, you’d be concerned about the wrongdoings and manipulations of the rich and powerful even when they’re on “your” side. (Although let’s not kid ourselves- unless you’re a billionare YOURSELF, the Koch brothers most definitely AREN’T on your side, and you’re a fool if you believe otherwise.)
Only in your fevered conservative mind would those 2 be the only billionaires worth looking into. Instead of the massive horde of conservative billionaires like the Koch Brothers or Rupert Murdoch that are trying to drive this country into the ground.
Then again, why should I expect common sense from a conservative?
You don’t have to worry about the Koch Brothers and Murdoch helping to drive the country into the ground, the current administration is doing just fine.
Even though Unemployement has fallen since Last October and Obama inheriting the Biggest Depression since the 1920′s off almost 30 Years of Republican meddling and Tax Breaks for the Rich.
How come no conservative filmmaker goes after them? Oh right, all the talented ones are liberals. And when the Cons do make a doc, nobody cares i.e.: Undefeated.
Wow, rich people trying to influence law by backing people sympathetic to their cause? Someone call the cops!
everyone should see this. after learning about the koch brothers activities i shudder with revulsion every time i see bounty paper towels or any other products they have their greedy, corrupting paws into. boycott the kochs – it’s the only way to get their filthy money out of our political system!
NotQuiteRight, don’t question Greenwald’s stones. Make your own movie about Soros and Immelt, tough guy…
A liberal making a film supposedly exposing conservatives doesn’t exactly make it credible or unbiased. If you only side with those who side with you what credit is that to you.
If Greenwald wants to show any integrety he’d do equally unbiased exposays both liberal and conservative.
But I won’t hold my breath in this world of political intrigue and tactics from both sides.
This kind of stuff is just getting boring and downright depressing.
Excellent point!
I love this new conservative talking point that both sides are equally awful, and that if someone says something negative about Conservatives/Republicans, something equally negative must be said about Liberals/Democrats.
Maybe there are just MANY, MANY more negative things that can be said about Conservatives/Republicans. No amount of “exposays” will ever make Liberals look as selfish and amoral as Conservatives can look in their sleep.
but the right-wing is so ‘target rich’ that you can’t resist. Ask Rumsfeld about Iraq v. Afghanistan about this. All you guys got is Soros and Immelt.
The repubs list of infamy is every GOP governor, all the SuperPAC boys, Koch/Rove/Edelson/Friese/Singer/Pickens/API/Wall Street/GS/BofA/Wells Fargo/ALEC.
The list is endless in their rush to destroy the country.
Exactly!
Only 10% of the GOP’s Election Contributions are from the Working Class, the Rest comes from the Super PAC’S and Billionaires.
They Don’t need that 10% they despise that 10%!
That’s why they make laws to make you pay more Tax and the Rich Less.. That 10% are just Uncle Tom Wage Slaves who enjoy their Slavery.
What makes a documentary credible is the facts it presents. It is the same as a logically constructed or legal argument. The facts must support the case your are trying to make in order to convince the viewer. That is the difference between a documentary and rhetoric. This is a documentary, and facts are presented. If you agree with the Koch brothers actions as presented here, fine. If you disagree, fine. If you feel the facts are misrepresented, then present your own take on the facts.
The part that is speculation would be the editorial comments on how the Koch brothers activities will affect the country in the future. If you think that examining their activities and motives is boring, I would say that you are not aware or what an important juncture we are at in the history of the United States. This time is as crucial to the next century of life in the U.S. as the laws and changes in government put in place by the New Deal during the Great Depression. It saddens me to see so many uninformed or misinformed citizens side with Republicans only because they are too lazy and unwilling to examine the facts, to do the daily reading required to keep up with the world. The truth about the Republican motives is right in front of your face in the latest Ryan Paul budget proposal. The cuts to the middle and poor are there in black and white. The lack of ANY new taxes on the rich is in black and white. The graphs of the growing income disparity in the U.S. is there if you google it. These are facts that cannot be denied. The conclusion I would logically draw from this is that the middle class in America will shrink over the next 50 years. We will be closer to the social structure of China and India-to site extreme examples. Closed or risky societies like those in South America where the wealthy require armed body guards and kidnappings for ransom and corrupt politicians and police forces hold sway. I hope you are rich enough to build a moat, because you are going to need it. It is the middle class that makes this country the safe, strong, free democratic country that it is. Without that we fall into true class warfare, and risk social up rise and upheaval or extreme control over the majority of the population by the elite as in China. We risk anarchy or fascism if we do not protect the middle class. Countries without a middle class are not good countries to live in. If you want the next generation to grow up in the same Untied States we have, you must protect the middle class and expose and examine what is going wrong with it, and there are things going wrong. Citizens United is a disaster for this country. It’s frightening. If ever there was a time for activism to save your country, it is now, even more so that during Vietnam. We are on the verge of losing women’s rights that were hard fought and long established. The Tea Party is being sold down the river by the Koch brothers. They are being used to further an agenda that will hurt them in the end. And again, it is their own fault for not studying the facts. And if they sign on t=fr racist motives, then they get what they deserve. The problem is, that they are trying to drag the rest of us down with them, and so we must fight back and attempt to expose and educate. And since most people don’t take the time to read, using film is great. If someone can only accept their information this way, and if it gets the word out, then great. The traditional media has not written enough and exposed the Koch brother until recently, and they have been around with their think tanks, etc for a very long time. Think tanks in themselves are not bad, but manipulation and seeking to control free thought are. And that is what they do.
Wow , that was one of the best comments I’ve ever read online and I do it everyday. Thank You
Facts? Facts can also be conveniently left out to present a certain point of view. It’s all just propaganda. Everyone has an angle. They’re all used car salesmen.
And the Republicans aren’t in charge right now so what have the Democrats done? Another 4 years of this and we’ll be one step away from being Greece. I’m going to read the facts and vote for the person who will do the least damage.
Keep building your class divide. The American dream is built on the idea that everyone can have that dream if they work for it, earn it, but the Democrats are little by little destroying that dream by making people more and more dependent on governemnt programs. The government can’t give everyone everything they want. They never could. All it is is vote buying.
PaulaWB
So what you’re saying is you’ve never Driven on a Road that was paid for by Government Taxes?
You’ve never been Educated in a Public School that was Paid for by Tax Payers?
Don’t agree with paying for Social Security, that I add Libertarian Sooth Sayer Ayn Rand took advantage of when she retired, Hypocrite Much?
Don’t like National Parks because they’re paid for through Taxes?
Don’t enjoy the Protection of the Military, Police and Fire Service? Paid for by Taxes?
Your whole life Paula has been paid for by Taxes, otherwise you’d probably of died from Poverty a long time ago.. Cause stupid People would of been the First to go if Koch Industries had their way.. They’re Psychopathic Social Darwinists and they will get what they deserve someday, a Padded Cell.
The point here is that the Kich brother’s influence is shadowy, and less than transparent. They have cleverly woven their contributions into the fabric of think tanks and front groups, so that the image conjured up in my mind is the Great Wozard of Oz, cranking up this big influence machine, and hiding behind their cloaks of chicanery in Kansas
America, what a country. If everybody with an axe to grind gets their way then we will all miss America since she will not be able to continue to sustain us under the weight of self servanthood, runaway greed, negligence and corporate negligence and individual abuse. The latter we are all guilty of.
On the political scene, I don’t know why everybody gets so fired up whether one is Republican or Democrat. Doesn’t matter anyway, same horse, different color. we say the Dems want to give the country away others say the Republicans want to steal the country away. Me, I don’t know who is telling the truth so I keep voting for myself. At least I know I don’t know much unlike the experts and think tanks that brought us to this place all with our blessing as we continue to fund them with our tax dollars. This whole thing would be almost laughable if it wasn’t so sad. Folks are saying Obama is doing a lousy job. I kind of wish I had voted for him. The GOP, the last time around, promised us Bush but they gave us Dick.

I just finished watching Your TV documentary “Koch Brothers exposed”. I wish I had known it was going to aired tonight, as I would have gone to the airport to get a barf bag as I almost threw up watching how we all are going down the toilet because of what these two brother are doing to our country! Hope you saw it ! They have got to be stopped!
Besides the Koch brothers and Rupert Murdoch, who are the other men trying to put the world on a standard monetary system? I could only think of these 3 when I was discussing this issue with a friend. Please, can anyone answer my question? Thank you.
And if this stuff is so easy to find, just imagine what is happening beyond the looking glass.
