Shonda Rhimes, whose new series Scandal premiers on Thursday, was flooded with questions about her old ones – Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice — at tonight’s panel “Welcome to ShondaLand: An Evening With Shonda Rhimes & Friends” at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood. Questioners eager to find out how the seasons will end for two key couples: Meredith and Derek of Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey) and Charlotte and Cooper of Practice (KaDee Strickland and Paul Adelstein), weren’t able to drag much information out of Rhimes, Pompeo or Strickland (the panel also included Grey’s Sandra Oh, Private Practice cast member Taye Diggs and, from Scandal,Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn and Katie Lowes). “I don’t know,” said Pompeo. “I know that Shonda usually writes the [season] finale, so it’s going to be good. So who cares? Let’s just wait.” Rhimes confirmed that she is writing the episode, but wouldn’t say whether it will see Meredith and Derek in their “dream house”. “I would have said yes three days ago, but I went into the writer’s room and totally dismantled the finale again, so I don’t know,” Rhimes said, to laughter.
At the event, named after Rhimes’s production company ShondaLand, she also touted the upcoming return of the Grey’s spinoff Private Practice. “I think that the end of the season of Private Practice is pivotal for a lot of the characters, a lot of really profound things are happening,” she said. “We come back on Tuesday, April 17, and I feel like the first episode back, if you miss the last two minutes of it, you are going to miss the thing that we’ve been building to since the show began, so I think you’re really going to want to see that.” She added that the characters have been on a “dark journey this season but there are also “light amazing moments,” such as the Charlotte King character discovering herself as a mother.
Washington, who stars in Scandal as crisis management specialist Olivia Pope (based on George W. Bush administration press aide Judy Smith), confirmed what Rhimes had to say about herself – she’s not so much secretive as she honestly doesn’t know ahead of time which direction she will choose for her characters. Nor does she give the actors much in the way of backstory for their characters. In fact, Washington said that she and other cast members would make up their own backstories and e-mail them to Rhimes, who would either accept or reject them. “I don’t go to the stage very much to watch things film,” Rhimes said. “Because I don’t go to the set very often, I write it, hand it in, it goes to the sound stage and comes out in the editing room. Sometimes something I write will play totally differently from the way I thought. When I hand them a script, I am handing them a blank slate.”
Rhimes did say that, even with her penchant for blank slates, Scandal was a series she felt compelled to write. After hearing from producing partner Betsy Beers about Judy Smith, Rhimes initially thought the story was interesting but believed she was too busy and the project should go to somebody else. “I already have two jobs, so it’s not like I have a lot of time,” the prolific producer said. It took Rhimes a year and a half to finally sit down and write the pilot on a four-day trip to Mexico. But now she’s hooked. “I see 100 episodes and I have to write them,” she said.

I hope she does right 100 eps of Scandal…loved the pilot.
I hope she does write 100 eps of Scandal…loved the pilot.
Agreed…its the best one I’ve seen this season.
“Because I don’t go to the set very often, I write it, hand it in, it goes to the sound stage and comes out in the editing room. Sometimes something I write will play totally differently from the way I thought. When I hand them a script, I am handing them a blank slate.”
So, in other words, Shonda is phoning it in when it comes to her shows. Maybe her shows wouldn’t be bad if she showed up to the set.
Clearly you don’t know much about how television is run. First of all, an Executive Producer/Writer/Creator does not need to be on set at all times, or at all really. They write the show and it comes out how it comes out. That’s the creative process. Second, this quote, in context, was about the actors’ processes. It was about how she is inspired by the actors and how their interpretation of her words sometimes changes how Shonda plans the course for the character. She cited Burke and Cristina’s relationship as an example because it was developed all out of how Sandra Oh handed Isaiah Washington a cup of coffee. It’s a testament to the actors. And her shows are clearly not bad because they’ve lasted 8 and 5 years respectively which is remarkable these days. Most shows get cancelled right of the bat on networks.
Rob, that is generally true, but, if one of those people is the Showrunner (as Shonda is), they are responsible for the day-to-day operations. In that case, showing up to the set might be a good idea.
checkmate.
well said Rob
Maybe if you had a show as bad as hers you would be just as successful.
When does this lady sleep? She is also on twitter interacting with fans regularly… I know she has other writers to help but still…
Grey’s Anatomy has always been a mediocre show. I recall when it hit the spotlight during season one or two, with all the excessive media exposure and McDreamy nonsense, and then it drifted back into being a show that somehow continues to draw viewers. I’m surprised it has lasted this long.
I hope it keeps going.
to each their own Darby..all of Shandras programs continue to draw high ratings. And that is always the Bottom Line and proof in the pudding!
How Rhimes can “see” 100 episodes of Scandal when she doesn’t know which direction she will choose for her characters?
And we are in april and she still writing the Grey’s finale? Oh come on…
Will Grey’s Anatomy continue for another season? Season 9?
Without Patrick and Ellen?
First of all, it is not the job of the writers or creators to be on set at all times. If you knew anything about television, you’d understand that. Secondly, if you had seen the webcast of the panel, you would know that this quote, in context, was actually Shonda speaking fondly of her actors and how because they interpret things she writes differently, it changes her perspective on the character. This isn’t lazy writing, that’s profound and actor-oriented writing.
Scandel is based off an idea called “The Alibi Club” — a real life type of crisis mgt firm.
“I went into the writer’s room and totally dismantled the finale again, so I don’t know,” Rhimes said, to laughter.”
Main reason why Grey’s has been terrible this season, Shonda has ALWAYS said that she writes the premiere of Grey’s (she hasn’t written a single episode this season) and at that time already knows what the finale will be….clearly the entire season was misguided if she’s still working out the finale in the 11th hour.
All of the negative posts reveal the ignorance of the process. Lot’s of armchair pundits who are clueless to real talent and how it works in television. How many people create a 100 episodes of TV that viewers WATCH.
Shonda is extremely talented and her show is a great success. More power to her!
Your point is well taken. I don’t care for Ms Rimes myself –her subject matter is too pedstrian and juvenile for my tastes.
However, in all fairness in an industry where half the new shows are cancelled in the first 13 weeks and another third get axed within 2 season she’s doing extrememly well to have two shows on and both doing well. You don’t have to be a fan to appreciate that she has a nice little machine and right now it’s running very well.
And to answer your question David Kelly’s name appeared on most of the episodes for his shows The Practice and Boston Legal.
And Rene Balcer wrote a HELL of a lot of Law&Order.
I love Shonda as much as the next biggest Grey’s fan…but, Im inclined to agree with ur post…this season has been all over the place, it wasnt as bad as last year but because I am a fan, I’m hanging in there through thick and thin..
I enjoy Grey’s Anatomy, although I do agree some of those plots are sometimes pedestrian and juvenile…I really, really like Private Practice…think the plots and the casting are complex, deep, and engaging…superior to GA.
I love Scandal its a great show however I think the placement is crazy. The show would be better if it were aired right before revenge or maybe on Tuesdays. I just can’t understand watching Grey’s Anatomy without watching Private Practice behind it, it is just ridiculous. If it is at all possible can we change the placement of Scandal, it just makes better sense.
Big fan.
I think private practice is the best show out there. Storyline is real and something we can connect with.
Grey’s needs some serious help.
