EXCLUSIVE: In what has become a network tradition, AMC held its pilot script showcase last week. The annual event, nicknamed by agents and producers “bake-off,” once again featured six scripts identified by AMC brass as the strongest pilot contenders. In a series of presentations, the writers/producers of each project laid out their vision for their show beyond the pilot with the help of visual aids, including demo reels. I hear the six scripts that made the cut this year are Chris Mundy‘s Low Winter Sun, an adaptation of the British Gothic murder mystery series; Craig Silverstein and Mitchell Akselrad‘s Turn, about George Washington’s spy ring; Richard LaGravenese‘s Philly Lawyer, about a law student; Jake Paltrow & Robbie Kinberg‘s Crystal Pines, about a journalist who signs up for a cloning experiment; Jason Cahill‘s F/V Mean Tide, about a Maine lobster fishing family; and Kerry Williamson‘s Sacred Games, an epic story of crime and punishment in modern Mumbai based on the novel by Vikram Chandra. AMC executives will spend the next few weeks evaluating the six projects. The network could order as many as two pilots out of the group. Last year, none of the six scripts that made it to the presentation stage went to pilot. In previous years, the scripts for The Killing and Hell On Wheels were among the finalists. Both were picked up to pilot and then to series, which have been renewed for a second season. Looking ahead to the next cycle, AMC recently put in development Thief Of Thieves, a new project from The Walking Dead executive producer/writer Robert Kirkman and Chic Eglee based on Kirkman’s new comic of the same name.

Chris Mundy‘s murder mystery series – AMC already has ‘The Killing’.
Jake Paltrow & Robbie Kinberg‘s Crystal Pine, about a journalist who gets cloned – maybe
Kerry Williamson‘s Secret Games, an epic story of crime and punishment in modern Mumbai based on the novel by Vikram Chandra – maybe
Craig Silverstein‘s Turn, about George Washington’s spy ring – maybe
Richard LaGravenese‘s Philly Lawyer, about a law student – nah
Jason Cahill‘s F/V Mean Tide, about a Maine lobster fishing family – nah
I feel the same way! …except the George Washington spy ring series is a “nah” for me rather than a “maybe.” Really hoping Crystal Pines and Secret Games get made, out of the ideas presented above.
“Sacred Games” sound the most ambitious and interesting.
I wonder how David Eick’s UFO drama, Thunderstruck, is coming along.
Anyone know if this means it’s dead? This was the one I was most excited for.
That process sounds brutal but all of the ideas sound like shows I’d like to see.
Turn sounds great.
I still can’t believe Hell On Wheels won the bake off — what a crappy year that must have been.
Actually, its why they shouldn’t have a “bakeoff”
Yeah, Hell on Wheels and The Killing? Ugh. Oh well, maybe third time’s the charm?
“Kerry Williamson‘s Sacret Games”, ‘Jason Cahill‘s F/V Mean Tide” & “Craig Silverstein‘s Turn” are the only ones that kinda interest me.
what about that comic book “Thief of Thieves” or the sci-fi one they had?
They bought THIEF OF THIEVES like 4 days ago. And they bought it pre-emptively before the graphic novel has even been published. It hasn’t shot a pilot yet. It might be in contention this time NEXT year.
“George’s Washington’s spy ring” — absolutely.
“Law Student” — uh, no.
“Lobster fishing family” — “a family of lobsters” might be a better focus for a drama.
the lobster show sounds lame but that you would be interested in seeing the clone show or the mumbai crime show because you loved the movie slumdog millionare
I’m confused why AMC needs any executives at all if it just comes down to this…
Sounds like they could free up some cash, make a few more purchases.
George Washington spy ring?! YES!!!
Meanwhile over at CBS they probably have seven pilots about police officers, five set in New York, one in LA, and one in the Bahamas. NBC is looking at a half-dozen pilots about quirky liberated women who work in an office, and ABC is working on nineteen nighttime soaps about married women who cheat on their husbands, one set in 1963 and the rest in contemporary times.
And at the same time all three networks are wondering why they’re losing viewers to cable.
NBC and ABC are more diverse this year. But you are right on the movie re CBS. And why leave out CW, which has a dozen pilots in contention about a spunky teenager played by a 25 year old actress, caught in the midst of a love triangle. At least one of the three is contractually required to be a werewolf, vampire or lawyer.
No Zombies on this list?
I LOVED Vikram Chandra’s book “Sacred Games” – it was a page turner. That would be a really cool series and pretty exciting.
And “Crystal Pines” sound great, too.
I’d vote for cloning and Mumbai. If I got a vote.
Some of these sound well just plan silly or same old.
Sacret Games, sounds like something really different that we would watch!
They all sound like crap.
“Sacred Games” – epic is right. Could be an awesome show around the world.
“Turn”- maybe
The Indian thing sounds hot. Spicy food and spicy hot chicks. I’d watch that.
So borrrrrrrring. These are the same 4 or 5 guys who get pilots made every year and they’re NEVER GOOD. When is the television creative community gonna learn that the real, fresh new ideas are not from these same 4 or 5 guys, but from 4 or 5 people you’ve never heard of? People who’ve actually been on staff on various shows, and know what it takes to make a great TV series work. How about mixing it up, for God’s sake. And how about a female creator in the bunch? BORRRRING.
What about Kerry Williamson?
“Sacred Games” sounds like it will be amazing. Murder and suspense in Mumbai – that’s awesome!! Something fresh and different compared to what’s on TV now. I hope they win!
Part of the big success of “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” is that w both of these shows, you have terrific supportive female characters – is AMC only going to have shows with male leads?
You forget that “The Killing” has a female lead.
Also, broadcast networks and many cable networks are going after women. It’s very crowded. AMC better stay focus on men. Their only rivals in terms of male-oriented scripted shows are FX, Starz and sometimes HBO.
The Killing has a female lead, so right off, you pose a very dumb question. And you cite Mad Men and Breaking Bad approvingly even though they have male leads and the women are only is supporting roles. You have no way of knowing what the supporting roles on the projects AMC has in the works are like. They could all have fantastic supporting roles for women.
Sacred Games sounds different, exotic and fascinating. Everything else is a take on everything else. YAWN. Bring on Sacred Games. Bring on the Different.
I’d vote for Low Mean Tide and Sacred Games – New Zealand has a wealth of amazing literature that has not made it to North America, as books and certainly not on television yet & Mumbai may well be the most interesting city on the planet right now – it’s old New Orleans meets New York with a pretty good sized splash of Bagdad thrown in..so the chance to bring an epic novel set there to life would be amazing and worth a shot. Turn tempts me as does the cloning piece, but after they cancelled Rubicon ( which was terrific btw) I am not sure they will have the patience for a show like that again.
The Mumbai thing sounds cool. Everything else sounds a bit boring. but India is always a cool backdrop. And timely. Hopefully AMC continues down the path of “interesting” (yep, I’m a big fan of The Killing.) Hearing great things about “Sacred Game” book too, so my vote is for this one.
THIS SACRED GAMES THING SOUND AMAZING!!! DO IT ! DO IT!
Poor bastards. The execs in the room cannot pull the trigger on any of these projects.
Sacred Games sounds like it would be something different, cultural, and fresh. Hope that gets the green light!
Sacred Games by Kerry Williamson is the one to watch here. I’ve read some of Williamsons previous material and it’s fantastic! Great to know we have some great new talent on the block.
