Sparkle looks like it has a lot going for it. It also happens to be the movie Whitney Houston finished before she died. She plays the mother of a trio of singing sisters destined for stardom during the Motown era. Title character is played by Jordin Sparks, and her sisters by Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter. Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Omari Hardwick and Cee-lo Green also star in the project directed by Salim Akil and written by Mara Brock Akil from a story by Nicholas August and Howard Rosenman. The TriStar release is slated to open August 17.

I can’t wait to see this!!!!
Looks great. More Derek Luke please.
Dreadful. What a shame.
But it’ll probably do very well BO and even better later sales.
It looks like a poor man’s Dreamgirls
Or, Dreamgirls is a poor man’s Sparkle.
Neither the original Sparkle nor either the stage or film versions of Dreamgirls were great works, so I’ll say they’re both poor and leave it at that.
The stage version of Dreamgirls is well directed but with a mediocre book and songs, and the film versions is about the same.
The 1976 version of Sparkle has a wonderful song score by Curtis Mayfield (who unfortunately went with Aretha Franklin to record the songs for the soundtrack album when a deal with the film actors fell through – I love Ms. Franklin like everyone, but those songs sound better as simple three-part harmonies, not with all of Ms. Franklin’s riffs and melisma). It also has some great actors and acting (Mary Alice, Lonette McKee), but a poor script, lackluster direction, and cinematography from DP Bruce Sutrees that is so dark (think overdone film noir) as to be useless.
This new version Sparkle (which continues the tradition of Sparkle and Dreamgirls borrowing from each other by cribbing from the art direction of the film version of Dreamgirls) doesn’t look like much of a revelation (I heard the soundtrack, and can confirm that it doesn’t SOUND like one either). However, I know a lot of black women (and some men) who love Sparkle with a passion, so this was made for them.
this is was one of my FAVORITE “ORIGINAL” FILMS. But this trailer looks HORRIBLE. i agree, it looks like a poor mans “dreamgirls”. who is the director that has these actors looking so bad? they clearly didn’t have bill condens vision or budget. this version of sparkle is clearly set in the wrong era and is a insult to the original version that was absolutely AMAZING! THIS LOOKS ABSOLUTELY HORRID! F, FOR FAILURE!
I am just sad at this. You really cannot go home again. Not like this. /And you should never put Derek Luke in the same film with a guy like Omari Hardwick it only makes Luke look bad.
Does resemble “Dreamgirls” but do your homework, this is a remake of a movie done before “Dreamgirls” even hit broadway. The original was amazing. I recommend seeing that one though I will see this for Whitney Houston which will make this an instant hit.
Movie looks just okay, but I’m betting it connect with African American audiences. Possibly more than Mr. Perry’s last few films, which seem to indicate he’s on the wane with his audience. Nice to see Tika Sumpter making moves, used to work with her and Becki Newton in NYC. They were so obviously stars in the making.
’76 Original – with Irene Cara – is a much darker, more realistic movie. This looks all glossy and superficial. My guess is that this movie will follow the typical african-american targeted movie and have big first week or two and then fall off a cliff.
As others have said, go rent the original, it’s a little gem.
For all the people hating on Sparkle. Please get the facts straight Sparkle came out way before (broadway and the movie) Dreamgirls. If not for? Sparkle there would be no Dreamgirls. Give the remake a chance how can you judge when the movie has not even come out yet. Come on.Plus the writer of the? 1976 Sparkle
(Howard Rosenman) is a producer of the new Sparkle? he said he saw a rough cut of the new film and? loved it. Now if the creator of the original film loves the new movie how can people hate?
THIS MOVIE WILL BE GREAT DON’T HATE! : )
