Tablet computer devices like Apple’s iPad, Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble’s Nook have replaced laptop and desktop computers as the preferred second-screen alternate to television for watching full-length TV, according to the results of a study commissioned by Viacom. Titled “Tapping Into Tabletomics” and surveying 2,500 avid tablet users in Los Angeles and New York between the ages of 8-54, the study aimed to determine what the arrival of tablets would mean for users’ behavior and feelings about the dual-screen TV experience. In just the few years that tablets have been in wide use, they have had a profound impact on television viewing, with use of desktop computers and smartphones showing the most pronounced decline. Digging deeper into the data, the survey found that comedy and music programming was especially popular on computers, including tablets, while reality, dramas, sci-fi and sports remain most popular on traditional TVs. But the survey also showed that tablets aren’t about to dislodge TVs as the preferred way to watch programming. TV won every time when when participants were asked about everything from sound/picture quality to watching current episodes to ease-of-use.

Of course a survey that only questions “avid tablet users” (and only 2500) is likely to indicate that tablet use is on the rise. I don’t think you can extrapolate those numbers and that usage to the widespread population yet — I’m guessing more people will have laptops and desktops than tablets for years to come.
I think this study is getting a little over-excited. I highly doubt more people are watching TV on tablets than desktops or laptops.
I have both a 10″ tablet and a 17″ laptop. I like the tablet for the portability, but prefer the laptop, due to its larger screen, and the fact that on a laptop, you can resize the picture multiple times to find the perfect size.
They’re both great, IMO.
This is a joke. The survey was commissioned by a media cartel who would prefer people to be using more passive tablets (spoon-fed streaming) over more active PCs (ability to download, share & choose form of format & venue). They got the results they paid for, even though they’re meaningless.
I think that tablet use is going to keep going up while computer use is going to decrease. Many people like computers more than tablets, but as time goes on, more and more are accepting that tablets have what they are looking for. Plus, I don’t see why I’m going to carry around my laptop to take notes in class and watch movies, when I can take my iPad which is way lighter and does almost the same thing. I mean just the other day a few co-workers and I watched a few TV shows while we were on lunch on my iPad, then I took it to class. So I definitely think change is coming!
