Movie-ticketing service Fandango released results of its “Most Anticipated Summer Movie Survey” today, and the top pick among survey participants should be a relief for the folks at Walt Disney Studios: The Avengers. This echoes previous pre-release surveys that anticipate an opening in the neighborhood of $125 million for the tentpole movie that features an array of superheroes from the Marvel stable. Disney, still smarting from the failure of John Carter to connect with a wide audience, will be especially gratified that the Marvel Comics mash-up was a top choice of both men and women. In a survey of “thousands” of Fandango users (the company didn’t provide speicific metrics), 31% of men picked The Avengers, followed by The Dark Knight Rises (23%), The Bourne Legacy (14%), Men In Black III (8%) and Prometheus (7%). Women weren’t quite as excited about The Avengers, ranking it second with 16% behind the year’s second Snow White film, Snow White And The Huntsman (22%). The list of most anticipated films for women rounds out with Men In Black III (13%), The Dark Knight Rises (10%) and Dark Shadows (8%). Notably, actor Chris Hemsworth turns up in two films on the list: The Avengers, where he plays Thor, and Huntsman.

I’m more excited about SWATH than the Avengers simply because of Rupert Sanders, but both films look exciting.
Have to say, I’m pretty psyched for DARK SHADOWS. Every new commercial I see looks better than the last.
But my top pick for the summer is PROMETHEUS. I really hope it’s good.
Can’t wait. The Avengers looks amazing.
I am so excited for SWATH. Rupert Sander’s previous commercial work are amazing and I am loving the 3 leads. I cannot wait for this movie and it will be my first midnight premiere ever. I hope they will have midnight releases.
This is the best summer lineup for years.
I call bullshit. No way Snow White is anywhere near Prometheus.
Outside of Hollywood, there’s some confusion about what THE AVENGERS is. I know several women who were very excited about it, mistakenly thinking it was the old Diana Rigg TV series.
Did they read about it in their Sunday paper?
Tell your friends to rent the dvd of that Avengers it was made 15 years ago with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman and Sean Connery.
Do you mean your tiny village in the UK?
The movie was re-titled AVENGERS ASSEMBLE in England you know.
Avengers looks silly… Where’s the cool?
so basically you telling hemsworth is making bank since he is in both lol
Notably, both men and women chose a film that stars Charlize Theron.
The Avengers wins for me. I expect The Dark Knight Returns to be “better” in quality, but The Avengers is the type of movie that has never really been done before. Going for the sheer spectacle of it all.
SWATH is going to be awesome!!!!
I’m gonna see Avengers but I doubt I’ll feel good about myself for having done so. There’s such a thing a dork overload. Huntsman looks incredible and Rupert Sanders is the man.
Prometheus is only 7%?!? What kind of Fandangery is this?!! Yes, I’m calling bullshit on this number too. Every blog I frequent has people salivating for this movie.
Of course, without knowing how the poll was administered, it’s hard to extrapolate any true meaning out of it. I think every movie listed is going to make good money, but this ranking isn’t going to be an indication of earning order at the end of the summer season. If all of these movies were being released on the same day & date, then there would be reason for serious concern for some studios, but they’re not, sooo……
The thing about this poll that really strikes me is the fact that Spiderman is no where to be found. Sony’s got to be reeling from this.
Wait! There’s a Superman movie coming out as well!?!?!? I thought that was next year. Off to check the HSX calendar…
Oh…. Spidey. Iffy whether or not I’m going to see that one (and I saw the first 4 times in theaters…).
Thor & Barnabas all the way!! ^_^
SWATH looks epic and visual. Its number 1 on my list. The Avengers 2nd. There rest… I’ll watch them as they release them.
