EXCLUSIVE: Seth MacFarlane is human! The A-list showrunner, who is juggling four series, a movie and a music career, has reached a mutual agreement with Fox, 20th Century Fox TV and Warner Bros. TV to put the high-profile reboot of The Flintstones on hold as his insane workload has not allowed him to give the project the needed attention. Reps for MacFarlane, the network and the studio confirmed the decision, declining further comment.
After two years of complex dealmaking between 20th TV, where MacFarlane is based, and WBTV, which has the rights to the classic Hanna-Barbera series, the new Flintstones was announced at Fox’s upfront presentation last May with a straight-to-series order to launch in 2013. MacFarlane
had been the driver behind the project as for him it was a childhood dream-come-true — by his own admission, the very first cartoon character he drew at age 2 was Fred Flintstone. MacFarlane was to co-write The Flintstones reboot, a co-production between 20th TV and WBTV, with Dan Palladino (Gilmore Girls) and executive produce it with him and Kara Vallow (Family Guy). To meet the 2013 target premiere date, The Flintsones was supposed to start production last fall, something that proved impossible as MacFarlane had been hard at work on his feature directorial debut Ted, his three Fox animated shows and another series for the network, an updated version of Carl Sagan’s classic Cosmos. MacFarlane is still busy doing post-production on Ted, a live-action/CGI comedy, which he also co-wrote and is voicing the title character for. The Universal-distributed film, starring Mark Wahlberg, opens July 13. On the TV side, MacFarlane has Fox’s Family Guy, American Dan and The Cleveland Show, all of which have been renewed for next season. (In addition to serving as executive producer on all three, MacFarlane also voices characters on two, Family Guy and American Dad.) Additionally, MacFarlane is shepherding another long-time passion project, the new 13-part docu-series Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey, which is slated for a 2013 premiere.
And then there is MacFarlane’s music career. His debut studio album as a singer, Music is Better Than Words, was released last September and went on to earn Grammy nomination in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category alongside such music heavyweights as Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and Harry Connick Jr. and Susan Boyle.

Yeah, it’d be a shame if he isn’t home when the truckload of money arrives.
Um…Seth voices Tim the Bear on the Cleveland Show as well…
Um, no he doesn’t. He hasn’t for some time now.
Actually, he does.
only because of his schedule and not because this is an awful, awful idea?
You said it. Yabba Dabba Don’t!
Yup. Classy, turning his failure into a plug for his other crap.
Just cancel the Cleveland Show. Or Family Guy.
Can you confirm that all of the animated shows have been picked up? I work closely with American Dad and they are hanging on a thin thread. No pick up has been announced at all.
Anything American Dad fans can do to save it?
Man, I hope that isn’t true. American Dad is the only one of the three that I still really enjoy.
Why don’t they get rid of that crappy “Bob’s Burgers” and “Napoleon Dynamite” – they’re HORRIBLE!
It’s nice that a whole crew of people just fired because he decided he didn’t want to work on it anymore. There’s no mention of all the writers who were hired or the production staff. All of whom are now out of a job that would have lasted two years.
I mean it’s nice no horses died, but canceling a show that’s already in production screws a lot of people.
I don’t think anyone cares about his album.
And how about all the jobs that he HAS provided through his four series, his film, and his album? Jesus, get off your fucking high horse.
He didn’t just “decide not to work on it.” If you read the article, he loves it and really wants to do it. His work schedule just doesn’t allow time for it at the moment. The project isn’t over, it’s just on hold for the moment.
Ha. Like he cares.
Are you sure an entire crew had been hired? I am not so sure, as I have been in contact with them about a position on the series. I do not think any creative positions were filled.
God, whatever will we do without another soulless fucking REBOOT?! Passionless zombie executives.
Do you even realize how ridiculous you sound calling something that hasn’t even been put in production yet “soulless” and “passionless”? How about waiting to see a product before commenting on it? Is that too revolutionary an idea?
Maybe we’ve all learned our lesson about reboots after watching “The Muppets”.
This was a stupid concept to begin with, which was led by an ego-maniac like Seth and had bad idea written all over it. This guy is full of excuses and of it as well. Will success spoil Seth? I guess so.
Sometimes we yell on the outside because we are hurting on the inside :/
As long as Barney Rubble has ‘empty’ circle eyes and not the inferior, later ‘black dot’ rendering, we can wait…
Anyone ever notice how the original Flintstones and the Honeymooners were essentially the same thing? Except one husband was a crane operator and the other a bus operator.
Considering Hanna&Barbara admitted that The Flinstones was based off of the Honeymooners yes.
I to work close to AD. I wish the clowns at Fox would stop treating American DAD, not DAN, like the red headed step child. That’s the best animated show they have. They consistently get high ratings and beat out that god awful Bob’s Burgers and Cleveland Show.
THANK YOU!! I haven’t watched Cleveland Show in ages, it’s just painful, but American Dad is always has the perfect balance of witty and stupid humor. I could watch that show all day, every day. I try to give it ratings on networks other than Fox (as my schedule doesn’t permit watching it when it airs) and On Demand.
God awful Bob’s Burgers? Bob’s Burgers is the best show on FOX, American Dad is second and American Dad has been renewed for a eighth (seventh produced) season. Actually watch more than one episode of Bob’s Burgers. The Cleveland Show is absolute crap though.
Fox’s Sunday night animation block continues its slow drawn out death
Hey Seth, if you are too busy then Hire Me! I have experience in animation. I can help out in the designs and production. Stop using Korean or Indian labor to make your cartoons.
There are hundreds of skilled cartoonists in the US making Seth’s shows. If you had the chops you’d be working on one of his shows already, not making douchey uninformed comments on Deadline.
I’ve read FG is produced in Korea and Ted was worked on in Austrialia…Mr. loud mouth needs to bring home all the work…and help pay taxes.
I’ve come to the sad realization that he’s never going away. Sigh.
Seth doesn’t voice Tim anymore. I saw the trailer for Ted and Seth voicing Ted. It sounded like Peter Griffin as a teddy bear. Save your money. The Cleveland Show should be cancel. Or Family Guy. He can’t keep all 3 shows on the air forever.
… I’ve seen Ted… and you.. are dumb. It’s the funniest movie that’ll come out this summer.
How have you seen the movie?
There is such a thing as test screening.
To the Seth haters who commented on this, if you hate the guy so much why did you even bother to read the artical was it just so you could spout your vile all over this comment board. This man has provided jobs to people, laughter and music to us and if you dont like him dont bother reading anything about him just so you can put him down.
Wow! lots of Seth haters, muppets haters whoa!
Comment sections really do bring out the “best” in people. I am indifferent to Seth Macfarlane, but I have heard his music cd, and I have laughed at a few of his more off the cuff pop culture references on his various outlets. There is no denying he’s got something. Not sure if the cd was grammy worthy, just like I’m really not sure if Family Guy would be Emmy worthy, but I felt compelled to comment at the exuberant number of Seth haters which to be honest, surprised me.
I love FG…it’s one of our favorite shows on TV. last 2 year episodes haven’t been as good. Didn’t like his album. He lacks heart when he sings. Ted looks like it maybe really funny. When seth and FG stay out of politics it’s A OK!!
American Dan? HAHA!
dont reboot fred
Hopefully when this DOES go through, they’ll keep it family-friendly like the original series. I have no problem with MacFarline’s shows, but The Flinstones is supposed to be innocent and funny at the same time, and that’s a part of what gave it’s charm.
I agree, if he’s able to make this a nice clean show I might really like it, I need my humor to be fairly clean to enjoy it.
Disappointed to hear this. I was looking forward to Seth MacFarlane’s Flintstones. I like Family Guy and American Dad!; The Cleveland Show is probably the weakest of the three. All three shows have entered a dark period where they seem to hate their own characters.
BTW, Bob’s Burgers is great. It’s the first project from any Home Movies alumni that has even close to the same warmth and comedic timing. I suspect Loren Bouchard was the missing ingredient in things like Metalocalypse.
Napoleon Dynamite (TAS) was a valiant attempt but just not funny or well-drawn enough. Same for Sit Down, Shut Up. Allen Gregory was just horrible. Bob’s Burgers has been a pleasant surprise.
Bobs burgers is terrible, cancel that shit
I guess its good news or something. The live action movies were terrible. And if you want to wake up at the ungodly hour of 5:30 am and watch reruns on Boomerang, cest la vie!
Stfu u son-of-a-bitch why should he have to cancel any of his shows? Macfarlane will know what to do even with a tight schedule.
