NBC’s The Office went through a major transformation at the beginning of this season, following the departure of original star Steve Carell. But I hear the show, which has not been officially renewed, may undergo an even more dramatic change going into next fall. Word is that The Office executive producer Greg Daniels, who originally developed the American version of the cult British comedy, is mulling a reboot of the series, now in its eighth season. Daniels is expected to meet with NBC brass to lay out his idea for The Office 2.0, which I hear would feature existing characters as well as new ones. As for The Office key original cast members John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and B.J. Novak, whose contracts are up at the end of this season, as well as that of Ed Helms, there hasn’t been a lot of movement in the negotiations over the past few weeks, following an early overture by the network around the time The Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson came together. There are a number of major outstanding questions, including the number of episodes the stars would sign for. Helms has The Hangover threequel and Krasinski is eying a possible January movie shoot, so potential new deals for them will likely accommodate that the way House accommodated Olivia Wilde when her feature career took off. Also unclear is how long The Office would keep going. I hear the main cast may want next season to be last while NBC is leaning towards not closing the door to one additional season. I hear no major decisions will be made until NBC brass review their crop of pilots for next season.

For the first 7 seasons, the good thing about “The Office” is that the writers made you care about the characters, despite each character’s obvious flaw(s). The writers showed you the good qualities of each character, even while mostly spotlighting the bad qualities (which was of course the basis of the humor of the show). This season, they introduced two new characters, played by the great James Spader and Catherine Tate. There is not the least bit of redeeming quality about either character. People could care less about them. You can’t figure out where these two characters are coming from. That sums up the creative difference between Seasons 1-7 and this season. They should continue the show, but get rid of Spader and Tate and create new characters that have a human side in addition to their ridiculous/devious side.
Yes, because rebooting Scrubs worked so well.
They should end the show now. It’s not the same since Steve Carell left. They have a good supporting cast but he was the show. Please NBC don’t have a spinoff on Dwight’s character. Just end the show.
Let this show GO already. I stopped watching it a couple years ago and what little I’ve watched since, hasn’t impressed me. Also, the idea of keeping it on after Steve Carell left was stupid anyway.
Remember when networks used to let hit shows die with dignity after 7 seasons?
I actually think they should reboot it, but it should be a brand new cast in a brand new office/business. They should end the Scranton office by telling them documentary is finally over as the company falls apart and follow what happens to everyone as they break apart and look for new jobs.
Then next season, they should start a new doc about a new group in a new office and try to do something fresh.
It could work with great writing and casting and would also give the current cast a bitter-sweet ending that could make you laugh and feel a little as they all have to re-evaluate their lives. If they can somehow get Michael and Hollie’s wedding into the ending of the Scranton office, even better.
The show’s not dead. The Florida shows were great this season and the episode at Robert’s house was one of my favorites.
That said, rebooting from scratch would be a risky idea but could work. I’d take the chance if I was NBC because the format works with great actors and writing.
I think a show with a title as broad as “The Office” could go on forever, a la “SNL.” People work in offices now and will continue to work in offices through the future, so there will always be an audience that relates to a workplace comedy. But yes, a thorough re-boot seems like a good idea. New employees, new office space? Honestly, as a fan, I just like the style, pace and sense of humor of “The Office” versus other sitcoms or one camera comedies that are out there (“Parks and Recreation” is obviously very similar). Anyway, I’d hate to it end!
I can’t believe they are spinning off Dwight into his own show. In small doses he is funny, when they try to center the show around him he becomes almost unbearable to watch.
That’s what a lot of folks said about Frasier Crane when they spun him off from Cheers….
this is just posturing, trying to get the most you can from a negotiation. actors talk about leaving a franchise, producers talk about replacing actors.
what are you talking about guys? This show is awesome and the best its ever been. Why, I could warch 9 more seasons! Love the show!
People. Many of you whined and complained that a US version of the UK series would be terrible. It far surpassed expectations. Greg Daniels is a genius, I would not put it past him to do something fantastic and resurrect the series.
the office is OVER. The cast is just sleepwalking thru this. Still like Erin and Creed. Tired of hearing John Krasinski is eyeing a movie shoot. He has tried and tried but is never going to be a major film star. That’s why he hangs on to this gig. Same for many others of them. Time to go folks.
Hey-I love that idea, College Student!!! That’s something I’d love 2C!
It’s time to be honest with them. The show is over, and is never going to get better. It’s creative hey day is gone forever. Please NBC, listen to your fans, and end this show before it gets any worse. We don’t care that you are hanging on to this because it still gets somewhat okay raitings. The fans only care that this show ends with dignity. So please, as a favor to us who followed this show from the beginning, end it.
I’m open to a reboot, there are cast members I love that I still don’t see enough of. I think they tried too hard when Steve left and instead of featuring the side characters people love more they brought in horrible guest stars (Spader and Tate). Show more of Daryl, Phyllis, Creed, Angella, Kevin, Oscar, Metedeth and Bob Vance. Think season 3….they are funny and we already love them!
The ratings say it’s time to go. It only got a 2.1 rating last week. Reboot it and it’ll go down even more. NBC should end the parent series and if they want to reboot, do it as an official reboot. BUT, they need to do the right thing and end the series or the fans are unlikely to stick around. I sure won’t. Why would I when the network would only suggest to me that it has learned nothing about its past mistakes and only wants to run things into the ground and cares nothing about QUALITY. The fact is a good show will have a beginning, middle, and end and it’s time for The Office to end. Only an idiot would question it and apparently idiots are.
I have mixed feelings, sure the current Office is not as good as seasons 1-3, but really seasons 4 through the current were all about the same, mostly funny, every once in a while horrible, but mostly worth checking out.
But the adding of Catherine Tate was the jumping of the shark, I just don’t get what the appeal is at all. Even when she showed up in last seasons finale along with Spader and all those others to apply for Michael Scott’s job I couldn’t help but to think what is this unfunny woman doing here. The episode where they humanized Tate’s character a little was very helpful, but they have a ways to go.
Sure they should maybe end this show with dignity, but its all about money, and really that florida episode where dwight goes into everyone’s hotel rooms to wake them up, and Jim is waiting for him was the best and funniest moment from the office in at least the past 3 seasons.
I wonder how many of the people here talking about how horrible The Office is have actually been watching it this season? It went to hell when Charles Miner showed up and was a truly terrible show for half a season, but it picked up right after that and it’s been great ever since.
No Office Reboot? Very Sad.
Would somebody please explain to me what is meant by the term reboot, in TV land? Example perhaps? Thanks.
i think the office season 8 was dumb but i think since ryan and kelly are leaving they can make it like kelly married raji and ryan killed himself. but as i think of it, that would be to much like a soap opera. ps the office has always been better than 30 rock
the only reason uk the office is still good is because the same boss is on there and i think they should get all new people for the us because the show was a lot better with the young pam and jim but they brent getting younger but pam looked real good at the beginning of season 7 episode one. probably the best figure and hair she every had.
