Fox and IMAX announced today that Titanic 3D grossed a record $7 million on 64 IMAX screens in China, an opening-weekend record in the country for the company. The total surpasses the previous record-holder, Paramount’s Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, and bumps IMAX’s worldwide total for the rerelease of the James Cameron film to $15 million on 408 screens. On all screens, Titanic 3D grossed an estimated $74 million in China since opening April 10 there and $210 million globally. Overseas, it grossed $157 million through Sunday, including $98.9 million this past weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Since its 3D rerelease, Titanic also surpassed $2 billion in worldwide gross; the 1997 original made a then-record $1.84 billion. It remains the second-highest-grossing movie in history behind Cameron’s Avatar.

Combined with the 100 million worldwide gross for PHANTOM MENACE, it seems 3D conversions are going to ordered up all over town now. JURASSIC PARK is just the beginning.
Frankly I think it’s brilliant that the $18 million dollar conversion re-release of Titanic is gonna outgross the $250 million Disney folly of John Carter. Of course Titanic is the better film anyway but still…………makes me laugh.
And it will beat the Hunger Games overseas which is also noteworthy.
Jurassic Park is the ONLY 3D conversion I’m actually looking forward to. Ill probably end up watching that film several times in 3D. So many memories with JP.
We all know Steven wants his billion dollar movie ( and possibly another $400 million + domestic performance). If you took all the directors who have made films that have grossed a billion dollars and put them in a room, Steven would not be in there (his buddy George just got in).
It’s too bad the Chinese don’t have better films to watch.
