The updated period drama’s axing comes with an ironic twist that only Downton Abbey‘s Dowager Countess might appreciate. The original Upstairs Downstairs aired on ITV from 1971 to 1975, with the reboot airing on BBC1 and often facing unfavorable comparison to Downton Abbey – which airs on ITV. The first 3-episode series of Upstairs Downstairs, which aired in the U.S. on PBS’ Masterpiece, ran in the UK in late 2010 and scored ratings averages of over 8 million. Its U.S. run produced six Emmy nominations. A second series, comprised of six episodes, has yet to air stateside, but the show took a ratings dive in the UK with its last installment tapping 5.22 million viewers. The series starred Keeley Hawes, Ed Stoppard, Claire Foy, Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins. The latter pair co-created and starred in the original. The latest version was created by Heidi Thomas. In a statement on the BBC website, a spokesperson said: “From Call the Midwife to Bird Song and The Syndicate, 2012 has been a great year for Original British Drama on BBC1 but at this stage there are no plans for Upstairs Downstairs to return.” A Facebook page and a Twitter petition have been set up to save the show.

NOOOO! Any programming that brings Claire Foy to my TV is worth keeping on the air. This incarnation of Upstairs Downstairs is so deliciously dramatic; be a pity to see it go.
PLEASE DO NOT STOP, SEND SEASON 3 FANTASTIC ENTERTAINMENT!!!!!!! BUT WHY SHOULD THE PRODUCTION COMPANY CARE. IT IS OVER, NO MORE UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS, EVER.
We love the show here in Canada, I was just researching when Series 3 would be out, only to see the post’s of it being discontinued. How disheartening. I also follow Downton Abbey and find it just as enjoyable. Hope they change their minds.
I LOVE Upstairs Downstairs, It HAS to be keept going, Please!!!
Upstairs,Downstairs….I love this show!!!! Please keep it going!!
Eileen Atkins quit the show, supposedly because the second series scripts were so horrible. All in all, a very smart move on its part. The show was a pale shadow of the original. Morse helped created both, but she apparently had no idea what made the original such an enduring classic.
The BBC is losing the plot when it comes to drama. Sky is taking over as the premier new drama outlet in the UK.
There were so many strikes against this series from the start, way before it got to the filming stage. It was nothing like the original to start, neither in tone or form. Myriad in problems and awful writing, poor acting–someone should lose their job for letting it get so out of hand.
Not to mention, Downton’s continued success.
Too Bad – they were on the eve of World War 2!
Upstairs/Downstairs is a terrific multifaceted show that compares favorably to Downtown Abbey in my opinion. If there is a continuing story line, by all means it should be produced !!!
You have a great lineup of actors/actresses and great story lines that should be extended and seen through ! Please !!
Please bring this show back. It is one of the more intelligent shows on TV these days. It would be very sad to not continue this stow. What a disappointment.
I couldn’t agree more. I fantastic show! Loved the cast. So crushed it is over. Please bring it back!!
watched upstairs downstairs on Sunday, 11/11/12 and now find out this is the last episode, show has been cancelled. what a disgrace, the networks treat their fans like garbage. I will not ever watch Downton Abbey again. I am truly beside myself.
I am SOOOOO disappointed. I was absolutely addicted to the first Upstairs/Downstairs and was really getting into the second–there is so much potential for an ongoing story! Please don’t stop!
It would be such a pity to end the show. I loved watching it on PBS masterpiece. I hope that they continue with season three of upstairs downstairs.
I love Upstairs Downstairs. I’m sorry the BBC midwife drama does not include the excitement and drama of Upstairs Downstairs. This show had a boring start but season 2 definitely made up for any and all loses in season 1. Upstairs Downstairs season 3 would have been a great filler for those of us waiting for Downton Abbey. Please reconsider.
I am so dissapointed. I BOUGHT SEASON 1 and 2 to have it to rewatch. I just checked to see how long before season 3 and can’t believe it is not being produced….BIG MISTAKE… SO MUCH POTENTIAL….
I truly enjoyed upstairs, downstairs. Quite a bit better than the last season of Downton Abbey. I thought the characters were deftly drawn and I certainly felt engaged. I loved the first season of Downton, but I am cringing at the likely plot development for season 3. oh well, all good things must end – but not all bad things evidently.
So disappointed by the cancellation of Upstairs Downstairs. I am French Canadian and Upstairs Downstairs was one of the few shows that I watch on PBS, besides Hercule Poirot and the New Year’s Concert in Vienna. Upstairs Downstairs was always an exploration of the British, London society, from its beginning in 1895 up to 1935, and the new series has continued to explore the differences with today’s North America.
As I view it, the series should be continued with a good story line. Hollywood has plenty of good, unemployed, scriptwriters. Two seasons should focus on the war years, two seasons should deal with the reconstruction years, 1945-1950, and a final season should extend up to the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953.
PBS and a major Hollywood film studio should finance and oversee the completion of the series up to 1953. We would all benefit from this series which attempts to answer the question of why was it that the UK came to rule half of the world and how did the UK adapt to the war and to a changing world in the post-war years. The British class system is fascinating from the point of view of a North American.
Hopefully, a fan of Mr. Hudson and Mrs. Bridges, a fan of Lady Agnes and Casper Landry will not be disappointed. Hollywood, you have the cash and your problem is to find a good story. Upstairs Downstairs is a great story to be told. Keep the cast that played in the second series. They were all great in their role.
I do not understand why BBC/PBS begins a series and as
the story unfolds..they choose to cancel. What a black
eye this gives both networks. You have lost a patron
and PBS supporter
I am terribly disappointed that Upstairs, Downstairs was cancelled by the BBC. I loved the thread of history running throughout — got wrapped up in the characters and their fate. Now I’ll have to finish it in my own imagination!
So disappointed a Season 3 is not to be. Love IT and I’m also a great fan of Downton Abbey. Bring Up/Down back with same actors as in Season 2 and pick up where it left off….
Are you kidding? Dustbowl? I was all set to see Upstairs Downstairs. Not as good as Downton Abbey, but it was entertaining!
How horrendous to cancel a show that was not only entertaining, but educational! My 8 and 13 year old would stay up waaaay past their bedtimes on Saturday nights as they cuddled beside me and watched glued to the set. It would prompt questions about that era, about fashion, about etiquette, about language, but most importantly about history. My 8 year old was eager to learn about World War II. My 13 year old wondered about “conscientious objectors”. Both wanted to know who “HRH” was – which brother? They were interested in sandbagging, in the bombing of London, and desperately wante to know if the family survived.
It even caught my husband’s attention as we debated the readiness for war of the Brits versus the utter disbelief and unpreparedness of the Poles in preparation for the same war. It was a fascinating performance by the cast that drew you in. Not to mention the disappointment I felt when I finally found a series that was exilleratingly clever and more true to life than any silly “reality” show out there. It also put Desperate Housewives to shame!
Downton Abbey was and remains completely different in comparison. Both shows are wonderful and show today’s society what life was like “back then”. It allows one to relive many of the memories that were expressed to me by my Granmother, Granfather, and Grand-Uncles and Aunts, all of whom live through it.
I am shocked and befuddled as to why BBC and PBS would cancel something that brought so much enjoyment, and actually had an entire family in one room eagerly anticipating each episode.
Shame on you!(PBS and BBC)

Cancellation of “Upstairs Downstairs” causes commentator to have momentary lapse of judgement!
In complete shock that the series has been cancelled, it appears that much like Mr. Prichard, I took momentary leave of my senses and made many spelling errors.
See what the shock did!
Needed to add this second comment in order to attempt to uphold the fact that I am not entirely unintelligent, pleading for understanding that intelligent people DO (well, DID) watch Upstairs Downstairs – in spite of its very few flaws.
Bring it back; include same cast; allow me to regain my sense of spelling.

I really enjoyed the series and can’t believe it won’t continue on to another season. It is as good as Downton Abbey which I also like very much.
Please bring it back
I, too, am extremely disappointed in the cancellation of Upstairs/
Downstairs. I found it very interesting and the cast was excellent. How callous of the BBC/PBS to encourage an audience to watch and then decide to cancel in the midst of the drama. This
action has caused me to rethink my support of PBS. I am thoroughly
disgusted with their actions regarding this program.
Please reconcider your decision!
Upstairs downstairs is a fantastic series, yes its similar to Downton Abbey but Downton is about a huge estate and far grander than upstairs downstairs. It was something I looked foward to seeing every week and couldnt wait for the new season to start. Why dont networks take polls to see if people care if the series is cancelled before they cancel it, you may be surprised how well received a program is doing and the numbers your going by could be wrong. I hope the season will be back
O just finished Season 2 and decided to search for when Season 3 would be shown and am so disappointed to learn that this wonderful show has been cancelled! I love Downton Abbey, which led me to watch this series and while not the same, it is excellent and now that the war has broken out, the story would have been so rich in history if you continued it! Please re-consider! There are so few excellent shows on TV.
Please reconsider. Upstairs, Downstairs is so much better than most other television shows. We should have more options. There are very few intelligent choices out there.
a complete disgrace and I will never again support PBS. After viewing this incredible series every Sunday night, I could not believe hearing that Season 3 was cancelled. To watch every episode and then turn on the TV to find this superb show gone forever made my evening utterly miserable. Shame on BBC and PBS!!
We enjoyed the original Upstairs/Downstairs all those years ago and found the second go-round fascinating though we were very disappointed in the Sir Hallam/Lady Percy affair. Other than that bit of bad writing, the series gave us a sense of what Europe experienced pre WWII. Both my father-in-law and my father served in Europe during WWII and U/D helped us put some life to their stories. It is also lovely to see all the beautiful homes and clothes of that time. Please reconsider bringing Upstairs/Downstairs back so those of us in North America can see more of this wonderful series!
The war changed so much in Britain and the world, it would be a wonderful opportunity for upstairs downstairs fans to experience this seismic shift in consciousness and culture through the lens of the Hallam family and their staff.
