The updated period drama’s axing comes with an ironic twist that only Downton Abbey‘s Dowager Countess might appreciate. The original Upstairs Downstairs aired on ITV from 1971 to 1975, with the reboot airing on BBC1 and often facing unfavorable comparison to Downton Abbey – which airs on ITV. The first 3-episode series of Upstairs Downstairs, which aired in the U.S. on PBS’ Masterpiece, ran in the UK in late 2010 and scored ratings averages of over 8 million. Its U.S. run produced six Emmy nominations. A second series, comprised of six episodes, has yet to air stateside, but the show took a ratings dive in the UK with its last installment tapping 5.22 million viewers. The series starred Keeley Hawes, Ed Stoppard, Claire Foy, Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins. The latter pair co-created and starred in the original. The latest version was created by Heidi Thomas. In a statement on the BBC website, a spokesperson said: “From Call the Midwife to Bird Song and The Syndicate, 2012 has been a great year for Original British Drama on BBC1 but at this stage there are no plans for Upstairs Downstairs to return.” A Facebook page and a Twitter petition have been set up to save the show.

I totally agree with Victoria…it would be ingrossing to see how the family and staff survived and how things would have turned out after the War…Maybe they turned the place into a posh B & B to keep their jobs!!
I just finished watching seasons 1&2. I LOVE the program and was utterly devastated to learn that there will not be a season3. I watch Downton as well, but feel that this program is in all ways it’s equal. please bring it back .
I agree. I am going to miss all of the characters, especially Mrs. Thackery and John Proud.
Ok ~ grew up with the original Upstairs Downstairs; got used to this new one and was loving it; a little too much t&a for me BUT, I got through it. I loved the dedication the actors have to their characters and I love how they brought their story lines across. I think it was a series packed with a great deal of excitment and twists and introducing people to a world in incredible flux. Ok, maybe some folks didn’t like their scripts but they should not have axed it. What a terrible shame. I love Downton Abbey, I love Call the Midwife…and I will really really miss Upstairs Downstairs `smack someone upside their jolly head and get it BACK into production and maybe, just maybe listen to your actors about scripts….they do have some good sense, y’know. If it weren’t for them, those characters would be flat 2 dimenional things in a pile of paper… kinda sad Mauds in a jar…loved her…they set up so many wonderful plots — things could have gone on for a good while.
I have enjoyed this series and would hate not to have it continue. There are so many possibilities for story lines.
PLEASE!! make a season 3 PLEASE!!!!!!!!
I love Upstairs Downstairs and I also love Downton Abby
I love upstairs downstairs. I’m so disappointed that it’s been cancelled there’s so much more to be done…
Best series I have watched in a long long while. I, like other on this board are shocked that it was cancelled. What were the executives in charge thinking???? I would have watched 10 seasons of this show, and I don’t even watch much tv. So sad.
What a simply awful choice, to cancel such an entertaining and intelligent series such as: Upstairs Downstairs. I looked forward to it every week that it aired. I only found out of its cancellation upon looking for the 2013 schedule for PBS. I found it to as delightful as Downton. The acting, writing and production were first rate. Once again an awful choice by the ITV! I am thoroughly disappointed!

I LOVE THIS SERIES! I cannot believe we cannot get more. I need to know what is going to happen to everyone. COME ON! At least one final series
Please bring this wonderful series to a better conclusion. We need another season, at least one more!! It was getting better and better.
Wonderful series. On the brink of WWII and with a delightful cast. Thoroughly entertaining. Sad to see it go, it will be missed.
I agree. One final season to wrap it up and not leave us wondering!!
I absolutely LOVE Upstairs Downstairs. I can’t believe it won’t continue. It was one of the best shows ever made.
After a slow start, it excelled itself in the second season. How I would have loved to see it through WW2 and beyond. What a shame- it was better than Downton Abbey IMO.
I loved Upstairs Downstairs and am sorry the decision has been made not to do a third season. The original Upstairs Downstairs went for years, so why can’t this one do the same, the storyline was good and the acting was superb, so come on, get to work and give the viewers a season 3.
I’m as surprised as most people seem to be here, that Upstairs, Downstairs is not going to run to at least a third series. I found the first two seasons thoroughly entertaining. Please create at least one more series to finalise the storyline.
PLEASE!! make a season 3 PLEASE!!!!!!!!
We just now got into this on DVD and find out it’s already over. Change your minds and get to work producing, please!
How come there wouldn’t be a third season??? I am utterly disappointed…
We love the new series – way more than downton abbey! We’re so looking forward to watching the show move into ww2. They just can’t stop now!
Please bring back Upstairs Downstairs. I very much enjoyed watching this program. I’m very sad that it was canceled.
The original Upstairs/Downstairs is one of the best television series made. The new series got off to a slow start, but I was enthralled with the second season. I really enjoyed the characters and the WWII setting. I would have loved to see what might have happened to the characters as the war progressed. Would Spargo & Beryl make it to the US?
I admit I am hooked on Downton, but it is such a copy of the original Up/Down except in a rural setting. I can almost predict what will happen next.
Please, BBC, consider continuing “Upstairs Downstairs” with season 3; (doesn’t Ms. Marsh want to continue with it?) I agree with another commenter, it would seem an injustice to the creators and the fans to abandon the show with the last episode at the beginning of World War II!
AT LEAST CONSIDER, IF NOT MAKING AN ENTIRE SEASON 3, MAKING ONE LAST 2 OR 3 HOUR EPISODE/FEATURE TO BRING SOME SORT OF CLOSURE TO THE STORY.
THIS REALLY IS LIKE PUBLISHING AN UNFINISHED BOOK!
SHAME!
My family loves upstairs downstairs. We have been looking forward to season 3…..Please reconsider!
