Warner Bros is tweaking its 2012 movie release schedule. The Ben Affleck-directed Argo moves back to Oct 12. (It had been slated for Sept 14.) Oct 12 had been reserved for The Gangster Squad, which will get a release date shortly. This is the second time the Ruben Fleischer-directed cops-and-mb crime drama set in 1940s-’50s LA has been moved. It was originally scheduled for Oct. 19. The film stars Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Nick Nolte.
Affleck’s Argo is, like Gangster Squad, a fact-based project. This project focuses on a covert operation to rescue a group of Americans during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. Six of the 52 Americans taken hostage during Iran’s revolution managed to find refuge at the home of the Canadian ambassador. Affleck stars in the film as well. Alan Arkin, Bryan Cranston and John Goodman are also featured in the cast.

Hmm, I wonder if they are trying to move ARGO a bit closer to award season and not release it too early like THE TOWN. It will be interesting to see if GANGSTER SQUAD lands in December though or in January/February.
@Ryan Probably December. If Gangster Squad lands in January/February, then it is out of Oscar Contention.
Warner Brothers wants ARGO to go up against THE MASTER? What a dumb move. Release it later or earlier, not on the same day.
I have a horrible feeling Gangster Squad is going to be a stinker.
Wasn’t Nolte already in this movie when it was called Mulholand Falls?
The Gangster Squad script was great, but in a “box office” movie sorta way. I think it could be a big hit and crowd pleaser if Fleischer made it right and they give it a good release date. Any Oscar talk for it depends on perfect execution and being a big hit. The Academy can’t resist nominating money makers.
Gangster Squad must be a dud… Everyone involved with the film has been saying what a disaster it was- through the shoot… Changing dates every month or so simply means that it is probably looking more like “30 Minutes or Less, Part 2″ in the edit scraps.
Gangster Squad is apparently unwatchable. Early cuts are always awful- but this one is truly special. What is interesting is the comparison to “Mullholland Falls” as it is EXACTLY the same setup that stalled the (now dead) career of promising young tranny film director Lee Tamahori…
