EXCLUSIVE: Brad Peyton, who helmed the global hit Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, has just been set by Warner Bros to rewrite and direct Lobo, the live-action film based on the DC Comics franchise. Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are producing.
Lobo is an alien that works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. Introduced as a hardened, rarely used hard-boiled villain in the 1980s, the character remained in limbo until his revival as an anti-hero biker in the early 1990s, when he became on of the most popular characters in the DC Comics stable. Peyton is repped by Verve and Piekoff Law.

Love it! Another Boba Fett rip off… Lobo Fett!
Always loved that part of Lobo’s backstory was that his childhood science project killed everyone on his home planet. Hope this works out, but it’s such a bizarre character that it’s hard to see how they’ll find a relatable way in.
There you have it, ladies and gentlemen. Warner Bros’ response to “The Avengers.”
Hey EDT, I think Warner Bros response to The Avengers is their little Batman movie that’s coming out this summer. They also have another character, known as “Superman” scheduled for next year.
Ha ha, I meant “nemo” not EDT!
I’ll pass. Anyone remember their first pass at a screenplay for Lobo? He came to earth to hunt alien fugitives and for good measure they threw in a little girl sidekick to be his “conscious”.
WTF are they thinking at WB? That’s about the worst pairing of filmmaker and material since they gave Jonah Hex to the dude who made “Horton Hears a Who”.
I have zero confidence in Peyton. Not only are his movies, bad, Lobo should never be for children. The film should reflect the comic: an R-rated bloodbath with a sense of humor.
I loved the Sheriff Lobo TV series. They never should have cancelled that show.
Ye Gods…I hope this isnt the same script thats been floating around for a few years i.e. Lobo comes to Earth and learns all about friendship and caring with the help of a lonely little Earth girl-rated PG-13 for rude bodily humor! Thats….not Lobo. Lobo needs to be all about fragging and killing and sex with hot alien babes and beating up alien bastiches…check out the student film LOBO’S PARAMILITARY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL on YouTube to see the character done right.
Lobo is cool as hell. He’s DC’s version of wolverine, but with a comedic twist. As lo.g as they keep the humor it could be good. Since they wont use the him beating Superman storyline, they should go with his epic battle against the forces of heaven. But, like with all comic book films, im sure they’ll ruin it.
Yeah… the success or failure of this really does depend on how violent it can be. That was always one of the keys to the comics – violence so over-the-top that it becomes comical. Lobo cutting his teacher’s legs off so she can’t run away is funny, but what puts it over the top is seeing there with her grumpy face and her little stumpy half-legs.
My tastes are very mainstream and I have literally never heard of this character until now. These kind of projects are pretty much always a disaster – what’s the last fringe comic book movie to come out and actually be a hit? I’d guess you have to go all the way back to Hellboy, and that was far from a smash.
ATTN. BRAD PEYTON,
Make this movie a space epic – aliens, planets, space. Don’t let him crash on Earth and meet a cute 5 year-old kid that shows him how to be human. Make it the next Star Wars (like the Green Lantern film should have been).
Akiva Goldsman and Joel Silver. It will be over blown, over complicated and a bomb like Jonah Hex,
NO NO NO NO NO
Won’t work. Look at Watchmen, Elektra and Constantine.
1) If they stay true to the source material – which in this case is some pretty ultraviolent stuff — it’s going to be Rated-R and won’t attract the kinds of numbers that will be necessary for box office success. (Watchmen)
2) If they water it down for PG-13, the whole thing is pointless. (Elektra, Constantine)
I will pass. Anyone wanting to experience the REAL Lobo, pick up one of his 10,000 or so mini series DC put out between 1991-1996.
Always hated Lobo. Part of that whole post-Wolverine wave of obnoxious asshole “heroes” that included Guy Gardner (the prick Green Lantern). I smell another Jonah Hex. DC needs to give us a big budget Wonder Woman already.
Oh, for the love of…
Isn’t Diane Nelson supposed to oversee DC’s comic to screen projects? If so, she’s failed miserably. (And no, she doesn’t get credit for Batman & Superman, Nolan and Goyer do.)How?
Jonah Hex should have been a gritty western in the style of Unforgiven or True Grit. Not Wild, Wild West.
Green Lantern should have been Star Wars in Space. This series could have easily produced 6 to 7 movies. I am just slack-jawed at what was produced.
Now Lobo, the most violent, over the top character ever created
is going to be dumbed down to a PG-13 buddy film…with a KID no less.
Some free advice here, if you’re going to do Lobo, then use Robocop as your template. And it doesn’t have to take place on Earth either.
Hey Greg Silverman, I want Diane Nelson’s job.
I’ve also got ideas for the Justice League, Wonder Woman, Zatanna, The Teen Titans and the Batman re-boot just to name a few.
Shoot me an email. We can make some good movies together.
I hope Lobo won’t be another disappointment like the Green Lantern and Jonah Hex films.
Agreed. I’m all for seeing this as an animated series on HBO ala Todd McFarlane’s fantastic “Spawn” series from a decade ago.
WB’s response to The Avengers? You Marvel fans need to grow up. Justice League is coming out in 2015. DC has a different approach to superhero movies. They don’t have to copy everything Marvel does. Besides, this is a Lobo movie. What does that have to do with The Avengers? Nothing.
I was so disappointed when I heard about this script a few years back but I kept my fingers crossed DC would come to their conscious…and well…they failed. If they want a block buster, REMAKE Green Lantern and hire legendary action film people NOT CHILDREN movie makers…I love kids movies as I have 2 kids, 8 and 10, and Lobo should not be a movie they should be able to see…. Make a Wonder Woman movie… What was the key to the Dark Knight success was the grit and dirtiness of it..right? As good as that was it would have been better as an R Rating but KIDS won’t want to be Lobo, this is fringe hero, please…I beg you…do not ruin this characters legacy….p l e a s e!
WOW This is going to be a giant flop from the sound of it. If they keep the script that they were planning then there WILL be a blood bath. Not from Lobo, but from the fans. And the fact that they’re planning on making it pg-13 is idiocy. LOBO IS A CHARACTER FOR ADULTS. NOT CHILDREN. As much as I love the Main Man I am not looking forward to watching him be disgraced.
Dude I totally agree, Lobo is such a violent character, and given the film to the director who made journey is an epic fail…I mean robert rodriguez and quentin tarantino could have been a better pair, because they sure know how to blend humour with gore… Lobo is one bad ass dude, they should really do justice to his character..He just epitomizes Bad ass and Nothing less!!!
