The financing is in place and Anthony Hopkins and Annette Bening are on board for Andy Garcia in Hemingway & Fuentes. Hopkins will play the Nobel Prize-winning author. Bening will portray Hemingway’s third wife, Mary Walsh Hemingway. Garcia will direct the film and play Gregorio Fuentes, the longtime first mate on Hemingway’s boat. The novelist’s niece Hilary Hemingway and Garcia wrote the screenplay. Shooting is scheduled to start in January 2013. Garcia’s CineSon production company and Edward Walson’s Sunrider Productions will produce. Sundrider provided the financing. The Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group, who arranged financing, will handle the film’s domestic distribution. Cargo Entertainment will handle foreign sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
Hemingway & Fuentes details the writer’s time in Cuba in the early 1950s and his inspiration for The Old Man And The Sea. The 1952 book was the last new work published by the writer before his death in 1961. It was a best seller, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and was mentioned by the Nobel Committee in 1954 as one reason Hemingway was given the prize. Fuentes, who died in 2002 at 104 years old, was one of the novelist’s closest friends during the last decades of his life.
Hopkins, who will soon be seen playing Alfred Hitchcock in Sacha Gervasi’s film about the director and the making of Psycho, is repped by UTA. Bening is repped by CAA. Garcia is repped by Paradigm.

I believe Mary Walsh was actually Hemingway’s fourth wife.
Time machine needed to travel back to January 2012 to start this film then.
Wishing Andy all the best. The material is right up his alley with a terrific cast. BTW – Ever since Anthony Hopkins stated he was ‘slowing down’, he has been even busier… which works for me.
Andy Garcia is an incredible talent, a true pro and a really wonderful guy. Can’t wait to see this!
What happened to Mark Amin’s involvement in this project? It was at Sobini Films for years.
Ken you are correct, Mary Welsh Hemingway was his 4rth (and last) wife. As to casting and as an avowed Hemingway buff, Andy Garcia will be terrific….Annette Bening will work if she gives her usual high quality performance. Unfortunately Anthony Hopkins is too old to portray Hemingway. He will be 75 when principle photography starts….Hemingway was in his early 50′s (even though with is white beard he looked older). Hemingway’s trip with Mary to Africa in 1953~54 resulted in 2 serious small plane crashes (with world-wide newspaper reports that they had both died)resulting in a series of injuries and concussions from which his health deteriorated. He was in such bad shape that he could not travel to Sweden to collect his Nobel prize in October 1954. Hopkins is an incredible actor, so it will be interesting to see how this storyline plays out.
Hope this film does well – The cast and Garcia are A list so it should do well…I heard through the years Hemingway did a lot of womanizing and fathered a few illegitimate children in Bridgeport CT before “The Old Man and the Sea” was published…So the stories go he was very political and was often seen at parties with young models during the late forties to early 50′s.
I’m very excited to see this film! I have been following it’s production since I heard it was in the works. Three great talents that will surely offer a stellar performance.
Bravo!
What will be a superb movie and w/Andy Garcia directing and the most talented as the charming and witty Annette Bening and none other than Sir Anthong Hopkins, all cannot wait to see such a wonderful story and movie portrayed….
Superb!
