After eight seasons on ABC, Desperate Housewives ended last night on a ratings swell. The soap series’ two-hour finale (3.2/8) was up 19% from last week, making it the show’s best rating in over a year and the most watched-show overall among viewers on TV last night. The ladies of Wisteria Lane weren’t the only finales on the block: Once Upon A Time (3.2/10), the 8 PM lead-in to Housewives, ended its maiden season up 7% from last week. The two ABC shows were tied as Sunday’s top show in adults 18-49. ABC won the night in adults 18-49 and was the most-watched network.
On CBS, Survivor (2.8/8) garnered a harsh vote from viewers with its lowest rating ever. The two-hour finale was down 30% from last spring’s season ender. The one-hour Reunion (2.4/6) was down 29% from last year to make it the reality show’s lowest-rated reunion ever. Fox’s American Dad (2.0/5) also ended its season Sunday, down 13% from last week. NBC’s now-cancelled Harry’s Law (1.0/3) was up 25% over last week.
In the 7 PM slot, Fox’s Simpsons (0.9/4) was a repeat, but a new Deadline (0.8/3) on NBC was up 14% from last week while 60 Minutes (1.2/5) fell 25% for a season low and ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.6/6) was down 20%. Fox’s animated Sunday saw most of its shows, with the exception of Bob’s Burgers, down. The Cleveland Show (1.3/5) was down 7%. At 8 PM, the new Simpsons (1.9/6) dropped 14% and Family Guy (2.3/6) was down 15% from last week. Bob’s Burgers (1.8/5) was flat with last week . NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice (1.8/5) dipped 5% as the Donald Trump series whittled its contestants down to two heading into next week’s finale.

I love that Harrys Law was up 25%. I hope this cancellation is something that will sting NBC just A little next fall. They should have renewed and gave it a 13 ep season 3 and tried it out on Fridays.
Couldn’t agree more.
I’m 48, have considerable disposable income, 4 kids (from 16 to 5) and I am most certainly not brand loyal. I was a pretty faithful viewer of Harry’s Law. NBC’s new comedies look pathetic – when they start to crash and burn in October, I bet Greenblatt will wish he had a utility player like Kathy Bates & Co. to go to. NBC’s lost me probably for good.
come on. really? i love david e kelley but the show was not nearly as good as the first season and this is a tv business site… those demo numbers were just gonna go down. there has to be a point where you say no more. it was getting below a 1 demo. that’s insane
That’s still a small rating for what was once such an enormous show. I would have expected something like a 5.0 for a series that was once the #1 show in the world. That first season it got got 8, 9 and 10 ratings. The second season opener did an 11.0. Of course, times have changed, and it’s incredibly rare for shows to do that kind of number now. But I would have thought more people would have come back. Something along the way must have pissed off those viewers…
i disagree. you’re thinking in terms of a sitcom… not a soap… sitcoms typically build it’s audience off network in syndication so when it comes time for the finale… if the show is still decently popular… there’s a big jump… and a dramatic show would be better off too… but a comedic soap is different…
Your manic depressive rant on Desperate Housewives is without a doubt one of the most bizarre comments I’ve seen posted in a long while. First you “expect” an 8 year series that has not had a demo rating over a 3.0 in months to post a 5.0 demo rating. Then you compare and contrast the ratings of season one and two to your expectations. That’s followed by an acknowledgement that “times have changed and it’s incredibly rare for a show to do that kind of number now.” Yet somehow you come to the conclusion that you thought ” more people would come back.” They make meds to treat hysteria. It’ll be okay. A 3.2 and 11 million viewers are more viewers than Desperate Housewives has had in a long time and more viewers than any other show last night.
IMHO, those numbers aren’t good for DH. For a show that used to easily get 20m viewers it shouldn’t have had trouble breaking a 4.0. Maybe with DVR numbers…
Losing a 1.0 isn’t going to sting them in the slightest when repeats of some of their shows could probably get that and be aired for free.
how many watched DH the last half hour? i’m guessing it was fairly consistent throughout. was a nice mostly safe finale. good final season.
but no nicolette… shame marc cherry
when you add up dvr for the week it probably will tack on a few million more… and whomever watches beyond the week we will never know… and online viewing (which is apparently a secret) and downloading and dvd… i bet the actual finale number is much closer to the the first season avg. which didn’t benefit at the time from dvr and online streaming
Sting? Look at the ratings. It was “up” 25% but it BARELY had a better ratings demo than a repeat of the Simpsons.
Fridays or Sundays the show just doesn’t pull in enough viewers. If it was winning Emmy’s then maybe I could see keeping it but it doesn’t even have a vocal fan base like ‘Chuck’.
NBC made the right call. They’re better off finding a show that might be a hit rather than keeping one they know is not a hit. If only they were smart enough to do the same with Parenthood and Rock Center.
Why didn’t CBS or another network snap up “Harry’s Law” ???
I hope NBC crashes on their comedies. They haven’t had a great comedy since friends. Thank CBS for great comedies like big bang theory and how I net your mother.
Well done series, well done finale.
IMO, this was by far the worst Survivor cast in the history of the show. ALL of the contestants were not very likeable, dumb, superficial and just really boring to watch. I stopped paying attention after the 4th episode. I guess the rest of America agreed.
Thank goodness DH is finally gone but CBS needs to rethink their actions about Survivor as they’re just simply over-exposing the show right now and the people are finally saying enough already.
I was never a loyal fan but housewives made me cry at the end.
Dear Marc Cherry: you had a year to write the final season of DH and that’s what you came up with? Very disappointing – it was unoriginal and poorly written. May I suggest you watch the final episode of “Six Feet Under” if you want to write that kind of an ending.
Signed, a very very very desperate former fan
