Fox closed out a record eighth consecutive broadcast season as the No.1 network among adults 18-49 but the race was more competitive than recent years, with Fox’s juggernaut American Idol shedding a third of its ratings from last season and Fox only overtaking CBS at the top spot in the final stretch of the season. Fox was helped by 40 hours of The X Factor, which, while not a breakout, was very consistent, and newcomer New Girl.
With help from the Super Bowl and Sunday Night Football, which dethroned American Idol as the highest-rated series this season, NBC squeaked past ABC to rank No.3 outright among adults 18-49 for the first time in eight years. NBC and CBS were the only English-language broadcast networks to post year-to-year growth both in 18-49 and total viewers. Of those in negative territory, the bleeding was worst for the CW, down 22% in 18-49, 20% in its target 18-34 demographic and 15% in total viewers as the network’s audience continues to migrate to digital platforms. Some of Fox’s declines were due to the fact that the network carried the Super Bowl last season. ABC’s ratings were slightly down despite the network introducing several promising freshmen, including the highest-rated new drama this season, Once Upon A Time, because of a significant ratings erosion for its veteran series, led by Dancing With The Stars.

NBC 3rd? wut?
is this real life?
Keep in mind, they had a Big, Honkin’ Football game played this year. If that wasn’t a factor, they would probably still be 4th. Still though, I’m sure the Peacock will call this a Triumph regardless.
It’s kind of amazing that one really, really, really big night (aka, the Super Bowl) can boost the average so high. If we’re grading on a curve, NBC does a lot worse.
Only cause NBC had Sunday Football…without it they would be the bottom by far
Is the CW going off air??
With FOX’s “Big numbers” shows being “Reality/Sports” how exactly is that qualified?
Yes, I know, “Ratings are what drives the business.”
It seems though (as far as “Original Programming” goes) CBS is still leading the way.
Thoughts?
WE SUCK LESS! WE SUCK LESS!!!
Enough 18-49 nonsense! It’s already been determined that older folks have more disposable income. A huge audience that’s getting huger, that will, believe or not, change toothpastes if there’s a better one out there.
How exactly do they know the real age of the audience anyway ? Are they filling out forms ahead of time? I don’t believe it. Its corporate BS to make advertisers feel better
You all can be mad and recite the obvious all you want. NBC is third place whether you like it or not. Get used to it.
NBC, look at that, I stepped in and you guys moved up in ratings….good boy!
777 ( lucky )….:) congratulations NBC, keep moving up to first place:)
so is the nbc rise based on the voice, america’s got talent and smash? wish there was a post somewhere that would dig into the change in the numbers, and more importantly, the “demo” numbers…..just want to see….i did see an article that a show that got good ratings for nbc, harry’s law, was cancelled because it had lower “demo” numbers….cbs seems to be the one that keeps a good “total viewer” number, but it’s dramas skew older…..
NBC’s biggest problem is that they allow their political agenda to influence their programming in both the News and entertainment divisions. They could be number one consistently if they tossed their one-sided politics out the window.
When they cancelled ‘Law & Order’ I cancelled them by deleting the channel from my cable line up. I treated them like any other company whose practices I don’t like by refusing to do business with them.
