Last season there wasn’t a broadcast drama series with a black lead until Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal launched in the spring with Kerry Washington as the star. That series is coming back next season, joined by several new ones toplined by black actors. It’s a rarity on broadcast television, which has seen only a handful of dramas with black actors as the leads in the past decade. The list of newcomers includes ABC’s Last Resort starring Andre Braugher; Infamous, whose lead is played by Meagan Good; and the CW’s Cult starring Jessica Lucas. Additionally, Fox in keeping in midseason contention its legal drama pilot Guilty toplined by Cuba Gooding Jr. Surprisingly, among comedies, which have been far more welcoming to black actors than dramas with such long-running sitcoms as Cosby and My Wife And Kids, there is only one that features a black actor in a lead role: NBC’s Guys With Kids, where Anthony Anderson plays one of the three leads. (There is a new comedy series with a minority single lead, Fox’s The Mindy Project, created by and starring Indian American Mindy Kaling.)
It is another strong season for non-American actors, who will play the leads in a slew of new drama series. The iconic U.S. comic book character Green Arrow in the CW’s Arrow is being played by Canadian Stephen Amell. Fellow Canadian actress Kristin Kreuk plays the female lead in the CW’s Beauty And The Beast opposite New Zealand-born Jay Ryan. Cult star Lucas is from Canada. Australian Jesse Spencer plays the lead in the NBC drama Chicago Fire, fellow Aussie Radha Mitchell plays the lead in ABC drama Red Widow, and Rachael Taylor, also from Down Under, plays the female lead in the ABC drama 666 Park Street. British actress Janet Montgomery is getting a lot of attention for her potentially breakout role as the lead in the CBS drama Baby Big Shot. Another Brit who is virtually unknown in the U.S., Theo James, plays the lead in another new CBS drama series, Golden Boy, and fellow British actor Jonny Lee Miller plays the lead in CBS’ hot Sherlock Holmes drama Elementary. That means that three of the four new CBS dramas have British leads. Additionally, U.K. actor James Purefoy plays the co-lead opposite Kevin Bacon in Fox’s Kevin Williamson drama. On the comedy side, in her U.S. TV debut, Scottish actress Georgia King plays the female lead in NBC’s comedy pilot The New Normal. Ditto for British actor Ed Weeks, who stars opposite Kaling in her Fox comedy series.

It was also a strong casting season for famous offspring. There are two new series season where the leads are played by the children of A-list actors. Meryl Streeep’s daughter Mamie Gummer is the lead in the CW drama series First Cut and Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson’s daughter Dakota Johnson is the female lead in the Fox comedy series Ben & Kate.

On behalf of the ever-complaining Ella, I will applaud now.
Don’t worry Ella. The writing staffs are as lily-white as ever.
The hispanic demo is growing, baby. Expect more brown faces in the upfronts next year.
As long as their shows aren’t all idiotic cliches about gangbangers and noble folks holding the line against gangbangers.
Hey Syfy, bring back that Blood & Chrome spinoff of BSG, but this time, cast an actual Hispanic actor as young Bill Adama! Maybe then the show won’t suck so badly you have to relegate it to a “web series.”
I am happy to see so much color on Television but hoping that the cafe con leche color shows up as well. Networks are so busy spinning off with Univision and Telemundo that they are forgetting that most hispanics are watching primetime TV. Where are we in the mix? Hispanic Television contracts, even in commercials pay less than network TV… Absurd considering the fact that they reach more people globally! Let’s write the wrongs and I do mean write! Write specific stories with Universal themes. Write new contracts for Spanish Television.
Doesnt make a difference? 75% of these shows will be cancelled anyways so there is no point learning the names of more actors.
Is it just me or are there more actors now than ever before?
Can’t wait to see Colin Salmon on The Arrow isn’t he one of the cast regulars?
Don’t forget about Person of Interest’s black female lead in Taraji P Henson.
I will applaud when we finally see NO white male leads on prime time television.
What???? No White Boys on TV!!!???? Get rid of television ’cause it won’t be worth watching! I seriously mean that!
Also Susan Sarandon’s daughter, Eva Amurri, is in “Guilty”.
If you flip the meaning of this headline: Bad year for Caucasians, Americans and struggling no-name actors.
Theo James is virtually unknown in the UK as well .
Wow. The networks are REALLY diversifying. 4 black actors out of like 40 shows???? You’ve gotta be friggin kidding me????? And where are the Latina? Hey! Deadline can you find out how many minorities CREATED new shows for the networks? That would be None….its stil 1950 in Hollywood!
It was also a strong casting season for famous offspring.
It’s not like the market has ever been weak for them. Nepotism is strong in Hollywood.
I have to add though that it’s nice to see minorities headling some series. Let’s hope atleast a few of them survive their freshman run.
Please Deadline I beg of you don’t say “STRONG” year for black actors when you’ve only named four!!!!!!!!….It’s another pathetic season for black talent and you’re making the executives really believe that they’ve made progress…when the truth remains….Hollywood is NOT diverse. The execs read your site please BE HONEST … BRUTALLY HONEST as you usually are. It’s a VERY WEAK season for black actors!!!!!!…please do the math!
Why would this be considered a stronge year for black actors on Networks? I can still count on one hand the amount working.
I had a dream that I turned on network television and saw Latino faces in primetime shows. We were so close this year to this dream becoming a reality – Marc Cherry was making TV history with four Latinas in lead roles, a white guy was going home with his Latina housekeeper, John Leguizamo was about to bring his amazing comedy to the schedule, and Rob was figuring out his place in a Latino family. Then, it all disappeared! What happened? I’m thrilled for my Black brothers and sisters, but to not have One Latino in a Lead or even Co-Starring Role on Network television this season is an insult to the Latino community and the mainstream audience. I am sick of network shows that exist in a world where only white people live. I don’t think I’m alone. I won’t be watching ANY show that doesn’t have portrayals of people of color.
Ella would be so proud about now, if she weren’t starring in the new hit Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection as the flight attendant on Madea’s flight.
I wouldn’t consider six all that strong. The fact that SIX is considered strong is very telling about the continued state of the industry.
You forgot to add Katie Cassidy under Famous Offspring. Her father is David Cassidy.
She will star in Arrow on The CW.
Katie Cassidy, daughter of David Cassidy.
Excuse me but anyone who’s seen Downton Abbey knows exactly who Theo James is.
No it’s not. I’m not black, but have we forgotten about Girls?
#barf
Tracy Spiridakos, starring on NBC’s Revolution, is from Winnipeg Canada.
Oh that’s the girl who can’t act from the previews. Send her back to acting school in Winnipeg!
Speaking of Revolution, why not give some credit to Giancarlo Esposito, the amazingly scene-stealing black actor who is playing the main villain and no doubt will be the guy who single-handedly saves the show from all the strikes it’s got against it: tedious JJ Abrams mystery storyline that strings the audience along, to ever-mounting frustration; family-friendly mawkishness; and the wretched acting of Winnipeg Tracy.
There should be a special Emmy for actors like him who are capable of salvaging shows on their own. If Terra Nova hadn’t been so incredibly bad, Stephen Lang might have been able to do it.
FYI, I don’t think Giancarlo Esposito considers himself a Black man. Just saying.
The numbers of pilots with non-white leads is nice but I don’t see anything “high concept.” It’s all generic.
Will they be given the same amount of time as the white-led series to “find” an audience?
If their numbers drop will they get the axe just because? Or will let them stay on until their numbers nearly wreck the network –like so many of NBC’s shows have done? Will they be allowed to get godawful ratings like “Fringe” but stay on because of a “fanbase” or because of some arcane claim that it’s low-rated but appeals to a “certain demo?”
You know regardless of how well they do I can see them getting the axe for reason or other, and I also see some marketing psychobabble excuses for it in the not-so-distant future.
Jessica Lucas is the nominal lead of Cult, but she’ll be muscled out of all the scenes by her competition: scruffy-drunk Matt Davis and scary-psycho Robert Knepper. Not nice of the CW to throw the kid into the deep end of the pool like that, with two very vivid character actors with cult followings of their own.
I also expect Vanessa Williams to become the defacto female lead of 666 Park Ave. She’s either Satan or the wife of Satan – try competing with that, blondie!
I wouldn’t say it was a good year for blacks on CBS, with Martin Lawrence getting shut out.
I think all the comments are pretty much on target. I just hope we all try to stay positive. We all know there is no such thing as fairness especially in Hollywood, but hey, things are trying to change; not as fast as we would like but we have to support the shows with minorities in them or else, they will snatch them off without a thought. I for one am tired of seeing white men and women for that matter all over telelvision. The producers are white and they just keep it in the family. Stop watching the crap they put out there and maybe they will step up the game. I think it’s just our society. Next, we need to work on encouraging them to cast actors who look healthy. It’s sad that women have to look like sticks to get a gig in Hollywood.
