ABC‘s two bubble midseason drama series are heading in opposite directions. Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal, which just inched up in the ratings last night, is being renewed for a second season, while GCB is being canceled. ABC’s two other midseason dramas The River and Missing, had no chance of returning and are indeed officially dead. Ditto for the long-forgotten Pan Am.
Veteran Private Practice also is expected to get a renewal for what will likely be the series’ final season though that is not official yet. (UPDATE: Private Practice has been renewed.) I hear complicating the negotiations is the fact that Mark Gordon, who produces the series, is also behind the drama pilot Americana, which is at the center of heated talks after word got out that ABC was passing on it. Yesterday, NBC renewed the Dick Wolf-produced veteran crime drama Law & Order: SVU along with a series pickup of the producer’s pilot Chicago Fire.

Why did this take so long….clearly the best drama to debut last year. I just hope we won’t have to wait too long for it to come back!
Way to go ABC!!!
I’m sorry for GCb!it’is easy,but funny…and i love David James Elliott!
BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, especially that GCB has been given the ax. Love that move!
Wondering what’s gonna happen with ABC’s Sunday lineup..
I was just thinking the same thing – perhaps ABC will go in a totally different direction now. I was thinking ABC would either go the ‘fantasy’ route and place pilot Beauty and the Beast at 9pm as a companion piece to OUAT at 8pm, and then something like Gilded Lillys at 10pm.
The other option was to continue with the Desperate Housewives/soap theme and schedule Devious Maids at 9pm, and keep GCB at 10pm or replace with Americana at 10pm. But from Nellie’s update [btw- great job Nellie on these updates - I know a very busy week for you but greatly appreciated!] on this posting, maybe both options now are DOA.
Now I’m thinking maybe ABC keeps Dana’s Body of Proof and places it at 10pm on Sunday, and brings in Nashville for 9pm Sunday. A whole new look. Nashville (I think) is ABC’s strongest pilot. I was assuming Nashville would be placed at 10pm on Tuesday, following DWTS. But maybe ABC is willing to roll the dice on Nashville on Sunday.
Gilded Lilys is DEAD.
Love this! Kerry Washington is AMAZING!
SCANDAL is awesome longer season next time I have no idea what to do with my Thursday nights now. The only show I will stay up pass 10 to watch!
Scandal… when’s that on…?
I like GCB…
GCB was one of the BEST shows EVER!
Scandal is one of the best shows ever tune in on thursday at 10 after Grey’s Anatomy!!!!
So, is “The River” officially canceled, then?
GCB’s ads were despicable. They tried so hard to be “the new Desperate Housewives” that they forgot to be any good.
GCB was light and airy ~ Funny
Too many people now days take Politics and Religion so seriously ~
that nobody has laughter ~ this show brought this to light ~ and it’s a shame that too many people complained about ~ it just goes to show how many “boring” people there are in this world ~
such a shame ~ that everyone takes life so seriosuly now days ~
Thank you ABC! Last night’s episode was epic. I was not a Shonda Rhimes fan, but she has certainly won me over with this show.
Neither was I…nor a Kerry Washington fan. But now that’s changed. I was always under the impression that ‘Shonda shows’ only appealed to women. But she’s come up with the perfect balance with Scandal…and Kerry Washington is not only beautiful, but an amazing actress.
And the supporting cast is just as good….I’m hooked.
Couldn’t have said it better myself
ABC is passing on GILDED LILYS.
I’m so-o-o disappointed that GCB was cancelled. It was the only show that I watched this spring.
I also am disappointed that GCB was cancelled. However, I never watched anything on ABC before GCB, so I guess I won’t be watching ABC. GCB was the only show I watched other than NCIS on CBS. Maybe CBS or one of our cable networks such as USA, TNT or TBS or FOX will pick up GCB. That would be a good move. We need fun shows to watch! We need more laughter in our lives!
A lot of people I know are very upset GCB was canceled!!! It made sunday tv watching entertaining again!!! Very disappointed!!!
SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i hate gcb is cancelled i actually liked it n ima give up on watching shows bc everytime i find one i like bam its gone
idc about missing or panam lol
My comment got deleted. I am not happy that GCB got canceled.
I LOVE the pilot script of Americana. LOVE IT.
I hear the finished pilot is fantastic.
What gives?
Say it ain’t so Joe.
Any word on when Americana might be on TV? They used my 69 charger for the movie where Anthony Lapaglia is supposed to “own” my car. Id love to see it on TV.
Scandal has been surprisingly good, better than I figured from the promos. Shame about GCB though – I really thought it could make a nice segue away from Desperate Housewives, with a dash more gay and a lot more sass. It wasn’t perfect, but I figured the writing would tighten up. And then, too… I bet it was a little expensive, with the large cast and all. I wish someone else would swoop in to save it, but I guess that’s unlikely. At least the Bitch in Apt 23 is surviving.
And Private Practice should really just be put out of our misery.
GCB deserved to be renewed. It was very underrated.
I watched a few episodes of GCB
I really wanted to like it, but I felt like it was stifled with being on ABC because of how they handled the material. I mean they neutered it from jump with the name change. I think this show would have done much better on cable, perhaps Showtime. It was a hour long dramedy, but it often played like a 30 minute sitcom.
I love Scandal & am excited to see it’ll be back. The end of last night’s episode was fantastic. I don’t understand why Season 1 is only 7 episodes.
Because its a spring season show which means it ends around the same time as all the fall show finales. Hopefully they want a 22 episode order instead of 13.
WHAT! GCB Canceled! I need to know what happens between Amanda and Pastor Tutor after that steamy kiss in Juarez!! I thought this was a hilarious show! And Eric Winter – HOT!!
Maybe Disney Inc. caved in to all their conservative shareholders.
Or maybe insulting 140 million Americans with your title wasn’t the brightest move. All of America doesn’t live in West Hollywood, and share the views of said place.
Bravo!!
I highly doubt 140 million people are “insulted” by the show GCB — just a few pathetic ones who can’t take a joke or understand satire. Lighten up
Typical insulated West Hollywood response. Always with the “lighten up” and wanting everyone to conform to your principles when you should be doing your job as a professional within the entertainment industry and creating entertainment for all demographics, not just ones that fit your “cause.”
I personally am a Christian who lives no where near West Hollywood and did not find the show insulting. And I would think that if anyone was insulted then it was either they never actually watched the show and listened to someone who said they should be. Or they are one of those people who is the type of Christian who is only a Christian one day a week and out for number one the rest of the time.
But hey what do I know it’s not like God gave me free will to think that right? (<— That's Sarcasm for those of you who couldn't figure that out)
Seriously! Why cant people just watch and laugh. Im a christian and i thought it was hillarious. i think those people that were ofeended were probably offended because they felt conviction
I live in Dallas and I am a christian and I love GCB! I am not in any way offended by the title, (which is based on a book) @thomas, your comment is so ignorant I almost feel bad for you, lighten up
I suspect that the Christan Right put the pressure on that caused GCB’s downfall. I can only hope that cable will pick it up and continue as it was truly one of the best of the new shows.
No news on The River? At all?
GCB was fun and light – it didn’t have the staying power of Desperate Housewives (which stayed three years too long at the fair as it was) – but it should have been renewed. It was one of the “hot” shows coming out of last year’s pilot season. I think ABC blew it with this one – or perhaps bowed to right-wing pressure (which was renewed earlier this week against this “anti-Christian” show).
Scandal is great, glad it got renewed.
With GCB’s cancellation, Berg & Harberts are now 0 for everything. Anyone notice that?
Mean. Nasty comment. Unnecessary.
I’m done with network tv! No GCB No ABC for this household. F*ck everyone at ABC. I hope all their shows fail!!!!
Well, if ABC relies on viewers like myself, all of their show will fail. I loved GCB, the characters and actors involved. I will not watch anything ABC has to offer!
Americana needs to go ahead. if it was an amazing pilot why don’t they give it a go i dont understand.
I am the first to admit that I was only moderately interested in Scandal; however after watching episodes 1 & 2, I was hooked. It really is a good show – I hope season 2 continues on the same path
!
I know it’s part of business, but really the outcome of one show should not effect what happens to another. *sigh*
Scandal is the best show on TV!!! Thanks, ABC!!
Spot on decision making by ABC on both accounts. I’m shocked they actually figured out the common sense thing to do. Somewhere down the line they are going to muck it up. I look for them to totally screw up their schedule again next fall instead of designing a winning lineup. So just hold out for that one. Score one for ABC decision making today but trust that they will muck it up real good when they release their schedule.
