At A&E Television Networks‘ upfront presentation in New York, which is going on right now, the company’s president and CEO Abbe Raven spiced up her speech to advertisers with some snipes at competing networks, including TBS, Discovery Channel, TLC and TruTV. In her remarks, Raven made the point that “if you look at just original programming on cable, A+E Networks is the most-watched versus any other cable group.” Without that asterisk, A&E TV Networks, which includes channels A&E, History and Lifetime, is running behind the Turner networks. “We are almost at 100% percent original programming in primetime across most of our core brands. We are not following the Big Bang strategy where 75% percent of the schedule is off broadcast programming,” Raven said, a reference to TBS’ recent ratings success with reruns of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory.
Raven next called out the cable networks who have launched reality shows with concepts closely resembling such as A&E and History hits as Storage Wars, Pawn Stars and Hoarders: TruTV’s Hardcore Pawn and Storage Hunters, Discovery Channel’s Auction Kings and TLC’s Hoarding: Buried Alive. “Our integrity and respect for the creative community does not allow us to even think of copying other networks’ shows,” she said. “We have too much reverence for our brands to become a clone of other networks. We do not want the 25th generation of the Pawn and Storage shows like TLC, Tru or Discovery. We want to stick to what we do best – creating the original.”

What happened to A&E? It used to air things like Sherlock Holmes and the movie The Hand. I remember a British mini series that A&E aired called “Green Man” with Albert Finney. In those days, A&E focused on great programming.
They still do, except now Sherlock Holmes investigates the contents of abandoned storage lockers.
Good one, Max!
I remember A&E actually having high-quality arts-related programming on Sunday mornings. Sigh.
A&E got endless marathon of Storage Wars on almost every freaking nights! I use to watch A&E for both original programming and off networks shows but now I watch something else. Way too much of those Storage Wars marathon, this killed my love for the show.
One of my favorite A&E series was Nero Wolfe. I don’t think I’ve watched one show on that network since.
But PBS and BBC America have taken over airing British imports, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to return to that. I’ve heard they are developing O.C.T. with Rosario Dawson, a supernatural cop show. Not exactly the most original concept, but it beats more pawn shop shows.
When she’s not taking wild shots at every other network that doesn’t produce nothing but reality show crap, she’s conducting massive lay-offs!
In those days, A&E didn’t have an audience/ratings. Television is driven by ad sales there, Jack. No audience —> no ratings —> no add sales dollars —> no money for programming.
Funny she bashes TBS for airing Big Bang reruns, as it seems like everytime I click past A&E it’s nothing but reruns of Dangerous Minds. But hey, let’s brag about Storage Wars, because nothing says “quality entertainment” like a bunch of jerks arguing over other peoples’ junk.
Breakout Kings is the only thing A&E has going for it, and even that only got ten episodes this season.
These comments are laughable and clearly Abbe Raven is speaking to an audience of advertisers so why not say what she said. But if you really think any of these relaity shows have anything to do with network branding at this level of sub-broadcaster (A&E, TNT, USA), you are crazy. They just got lucky and their shows could be on any number of other networks. Scripted programming continues to be the one expression a network can point to for its identity. If The Glades is that one show for them, then they are worse off creatively than not. Touting realtiy shows as DNA building for a channel is ridiculous. There is noting immersive about reality, it’s often ephemera and subject to day and date upside as opposed to any real value in a library. Don’t get me wrong, formats are exceedingly valuable, but there are very few realtiy shows that rate in repeat which is why every channel runsd them a thousand times in order to create a cume that is defensible. It’s all so opaque and this kind of a speech is better rendered at a high school graduation ceremony.
A&E needs to get out of their boring box and try something new
Hoarders is so predictable as is the stuff they plant in those storage lockers and lets not even address the faked out on FLIPPED OUT or – ughh who would order that show i ask??????????
get some more fun into this line up
What’s happened to this once-proud network? It seems like nothing airs on here except reality shows and such and it’s just getting tiresome. Maybe Raven needs to explain that to the advertisers.
A&E and History used to be the class of cable. Now the only thing historic on history is the occasional artifact on “Pawn Stars.” Hard to believe this silly twit is proud of her “original” programming. All you need to do to create original programming on History or A&E these days is film a bunch of cretins doing something ridiculous. “Swamp People” anyone?
Who is she kidding with her “we won’t stoop to conquer” posturing? History ripped off even Animal Planet’s catfishing series…
This is laughable
She claims that her nets “create the original” yet Discovery already has a series about families from south Boston, and she ripped off Animal Planets Tanked with her own “fish tank king”
If you are going to profess to take the high road abbe, then make sure you can actually walk the walk
Sales folk are not idiots, but you seem to think we are.
She’s totally full of it. The only reason Pawn Stars came out before Hardcore Pawn is because both networks realized they were working on similar shows and A&E rushed Pawn Stars into a series so it would look like TruTV stole their idea.
It truely disappoints me that A&E is canceling Dog The Bounty Hunter. A&E has allowed myself as well as many more people across America to not only watch Dog and his team to take fugitives off the street and all the while doing everything within his capability to fix them. At the very least, he plants a seed. A&E has allowed myself as well as numerous other people across america get to no the Chapman family who besides trying to fix they fugitives they pick up, they also help others, for example, Moose Heart where for one or another children have wound up because of parental problems. Also the room they built for the familethat needed it. They give pep talks in rehab places to try to allow people there is hope for them. Most importantly they let everyone no that God is real, they pray not only for themselves but for the fugitives as well. It is my opinion that A&E will be making a hugh mistake to cancel the show. Also you are going to replace it with Duck Dynasty, REALLY??? That is a do anything to bunch of uneducated people who have a lot of money that wastes it on junk they don’t do anything to help people, again I say REALLY??? Please. Lastly I read that one of the reasons behind A&E is coming to their decision is because of recent problems between LeLand, Duayne Lee, and Beth, PLEASE! I challenge anyone at A&E to say that at sometime or another you have not had a disagreement in your own family?
I cannot believe that you have wasted an entire Saturday evening with that very stupid show “pawn stars”. what a total and complete waste of time and air space. That show does not have a single redeeming feature. Thanks for NOTHING
