Last week, News Corp COO Chase Carey told Wall Street analysts that “our challenge for next year is to put some fresh energy in” Fox’s American Idol after “we probably didn’t do enough this year” in terms of changes. During this morning’s Fox upfronts conference call, Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said the show will undergo “some creative tweaking” heading into next season, declining to elaborate because the reality series is still in production on its current 11th season. He acknowledged that the network didn’t feel it needed to make changes going into this season after a strong previous cycle with new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez and that the show’s ratings “dropped more than anticipated” this cycle as “space got crowded.” Asked whether he is satisfied with the new judges’ performance, Fox entertainment president Peter Rice said they are “terrific and have great chemistry and integrity.” He refused to confirm that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will join Fox’s other music reality series, The X Factor, as new judges, only noting that the new judging panel would be “more entertaining and exiting.”

Reilly also took subtle jabs at NBC, which is putting 13 new comedies on the schedule next season, several of them with shorter orders. “Some of the short orders would be very confusing for the audience,” Reilly said. He later addressed NBC’s music competition The Voice and its signature spinning chairs element. “It’s a twist that turned out to be a gimmick — look at the precipitous decline after that,” he said.

VERY TRUE.
The Voice would work if america was blind folded too. It stills ends up with good looking poeple who can sing well like every other competion. I like the chair thing though since I only watch the audition part.
About time!
The judges are so getting fired.
“terrific and have great chemistry and integrity.”…
They must know the judging panel needs to be retooled. Their 99% praise to all the contestants has made for a bland, boring, toothless show. The total reverse of what it once was when Simon was there.
I’d first try to put Jimmy Iovine on the panel. Dump Tyler and Jackson, who are both worthless. J Lo brings looks and celebrity to the panel — I think she’d be fine in the “Paula role” if she was surrounded by someone, ANYONE, who could at least dole out honest criticism.
If they can’t find one honest person to critique the contestants, they’re done for.
Agree 100% with you. Tyler loves everyone. Jimmy is the only reason i watch. He keeps it real. Even if a judge loves a performance, they owe it to the contestant (and the audience) to give a critique that highlights what the contestant did well and where they might improve. If for some reason the judge thought it was perfect, the judge must still provide the reasons why. This is called a learning moment and is sorely missing from the show.
Maybe part of the problem is that after watching X-Factor all fall people didn’t feel the need to come back for AI in the spring.
I and everyone else thinks that the Idol Judges are just wonderful—Would not be the same without Steven Tyler or Randy Jackson–
They are all very good chemistry and integrity for sure
It would not be IDOL if it were not for these judges!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Simon stinks
Everybody?….you sure take liberties speaking for a lot of people. Personally I think AI judges stink and get going with their personal agendas and don’t like letting America decide when their turn has passed. And I would love to have Simon back….I can’t believe the AI judges wasted our time with that Reed guy while other real talent missed opportunity.
Except that nobody watched “X-Factor”
Fox entertainment president Peter Rice said they (the judges) are “terrific and have great chemistry and integrity.”
What show does he watch? How can he say they have integrity? They tell EVERYONE that they sang great and are awesome!!!
Cable shows seem to be doing well with 13 episode orders.
I thought this season was leaps and bounds better than last year. The only retooling they need is new judges.
I think the voice and the x factor, combined with scotty mccreery winning over many talented singers last year helped bring idol down. I still think that Idol is the best show among the three — it doesn’t rely on tricks, just simple singing. This has been such a great season with the strongest top 7 the show has ever seen. I think if they air this after the Super Bowl like the voice did this past year, it will get some of it’s ratings back. Idol is still the number 1 show — the voice dropped within it’s season to series lows and dropped over 50 percent in demos and audiences because nbc is so stupid to air it opposite dancing with the stars and the cbs comedies when Tuesdays are free and clear.
Idol just needs three things to improve: better (and relevant) judges, a truncated audition period (under a month of episodes and no more fake/bad auditions), and a better voting system. Because let’s face it: if one more “dreamy white guy” wins the season who is either lackluster to awful (Scotty, Lee, Kris…looking at you!), then it’s time to do something drastic. If ever it was more obvious, it was last season, when all the girls were getting voted off quickly…and shouldn’t have been.
It’s also getting to the point where they should change the name of the show to “Caucasian Idol”. This is the first time in several years where there is only one caucasian person in the final three…which is a nice, pleasant surprise after the white-washing this show had been going through. The past few years, there have been less and less ethnic diversity in the Top 13…and the ethnic contestants consistently went home first. This season surprised me (I didn’t watch…I couldn’t stomach it…but I kept up with the vote-offs). Every week, an ethnic or girl contestant was sent home for the first 6 weeks…making me think “There they go again”. But then there was a shift, and it was actually nice to see more girls towards the end this time around. I still predict Phillip Phillips will win…he’s the final “dreamy caucasian boy” left. If he DOESN’T win? I may go back to Idol next year.
Perhaps if they had any decent contestants this year, people would have watched.
They were all “blah” and some could barely sing yet were praised.
Couldn’t do it..
I have watched AI since the beginning. I was glad to see Simon go–he had lost the ability to be helpful to contestants. The three judges now are really quite wonderful–all of them know the music business inside out. but they do need to bring in more objective critique. They are quite critical during auditions, and both last year and this year selected quality talent, so the contestants in the top ten do not have glaring issues. The addition of Jimmy was a stroke of genius. He has perspective from song choice and practice to the performance. My only complaint this season was with some of the song choices. But AI has the right ingredients. I watched the VOICE twice and would not bother again. I say tweak AI but don’t lose Ryan, JLo, Steven, Randy or Jimmy. They are a top notch team.
Scotty McCreery is living out the AI dream. He is a huge success in country music. Anyone who thought he brought AI down does not understand country music or country fans. This is a legit genre and it has strong historical roots and is growing.
Totally agree about McCreery…think he saved AI last yr. The judges were shamelessly promoting Lauren A….and it seemed apparent to me they were willing to overlook any problems the girl had and all her whining and pouting was disgusting. I can’t understand why they pick their favs the way they do. Skylar Laine has twice the talent and character if American wld have considered a country artist this yr…but too many ppl disliked the double country win last yr and it just wasn’t gonna happen this yr. I can understand that other ppl like other artists/genres and AI did have good talent this yr, just not in my genre with exception of Skylar and Holly so after they left it was boring for me, just like it was last yr for non-country. I think they overdid the praise for their favs. Poor Holly, just like Haley last yr. I realyy think the Voice typically has better talent and I like the blind auditions…as far as someone said it still always turns out to be an attractive person…well that’s not the judges, their pics exclude pic by appearance, it’s voters making choices ultimately.
American Idol came up with a terrific idea in the very start but pity they couldn’t live up to the reputation. Would be glad if we do get to see that ‘new energy’.
They really only need Ryan for people to identify it as “Idol” – get rid of the other three and replace them with people who are actually willing to critique the contestants and the show can live on for another two years easily.
Judges aren’t good. Too nice. Randy Jackson honestly lacks credibility. The acts he’s signed since being in American Idol have done nothing. Steven Tyler is too nice and spacey and let’s put it bluntly unforgettable. With the Voice and X-Factor having huge celebrity judges, it makes American Idol look very weak.
Replace Randy with P. Diddy or Kanye West because they know their shit and are a-holes. Randy tries to be mean because I feel like he was told to.
Bring in Mariah Carey or a big country star (the short Dixie Chick – she’s feisty).
Bring in a bad-ass rocker that knows how to spot/critique talent or a really sharky industry exec that has discovered a few famous people. Bono? Elton John? (I know he’s not bad-ass)
Have past American Idol winners come in and mentor. Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson (I know she lost)
Have them sing more contemporary songs that people know for god’s sake. This season had so many old songs.
Regarding Fox’s Kevin Reilly’s comments about “short order sitcoms”, it should be noted that in Britain, most situation coemdy series (whether on the BBC or commercial ITV) do no more than eight episodes a season.
Most British sitcoms produce 6 or 7 episodes a year.
The problem is behind the scenes, not in front of it. Either it’s a forum to find new talent or it isn’t. Either the audience makes the choices or it doesn’t. There’s so much dishonesty in the show – let’s see a season without plants, deals, or rigging.
Joshua should never have been elliminated they need a better judging system because joshua has true talent and he was the best
I think American idol needs a new judging system to where the judges also makes decisions on who win several people were tryin to get through to vote for Joshua The real suppose to be winner and couldn’t get through if u no true talent you no joshua should never have been voted off he an amazing singer the judges knew it so did American and I feel Josh should have won with flying colors I feel its rigged and can no longer watch this mess of s SHOW
I agree with you. I tried MANY MANY times to get through to vote for Joshua, not because of his race, but because he was ABSOLUTELY THE BEST SINGER. I kept getting recordings stating sorry the number cant be reached and then something about Cricket wireless. I don’t have a Cricket wireless phone. I think they need judges who will give constructive criticism. However, it really doesnt matter because if you are not a Caucasian male you wont win anyway. ITS DEFINITELY RIGGED. There is no reason to watch–only white men have a chance…Funny how on the other shows you dont have to be white to win…I definitely will no longer watch Its a total waste of time
I don’t like the judges having a say so on who wins when we get to the TOP 12. Get rid of the SAVE and let America decide. At least one judge must be replaced with an exciting, knowledgable personality!
“AI” first needs to up the age of their contestants. As an adult it really doesn’t interest me to see 15 and 16 year olds sing and then whine how much they have worked all their life for it. 15 and 16 year olds belong in school. They have many years after to achieve their dream. Jimmy Iovine is usually right on the money, His mentor for that week should be a guest judge who would more likely be honest and least likely to develop favoritism. The save must go. Stop making the show about the judges. At times I found them to be unprofessional. Lastly the voting system must change where that you are permitted a vote for the number of contestants remaining in the competition.
You have no idea how many people stopped watching Idol when James Durbin was eliminated last year. Seriously,James is an amazing performer and he is killing it on tour this summer without Idol. I would never watch again without the current judges. We have enough hatefulness in this country right now without someone like Simon. These judges truly mentored these kids and they got better and better. Also they are so much fun to watch. The judges seemed like a family this year. Are we so far gone that nice doesn’t matter anymore?
Season 11 lacked interesting contestants. I mean, look at season 10 – the 13 finalists were young, fresh and all had the it-factor, so you were interested in following the competition. In season 11, however, half of the contestants weren’t born with the shine of a star, therefore it was blah 4 real.
As for the judges, they became so soft this season. It’s not about being mean, it’s about being critical and constructive. I barely saw that in season 11. I grew kinda tired of them because of that. I would replace all of them except for J.LO because she was the reason why I even started watching AI and one “fan-like judge” is ok. But if rumors are true and she indees wants to quit, I think Beyoncé would be the only one who could replace such a big star that J.LO is.
