Los Angeles, CA – May 2, 2012 – IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX; TSX:IMX), Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Studios today announced that the epic Super Hero adventure Marvel’s The Avengers will be released in the immersive IMAX® 3D format in 451 digital theatres worldwide. Domestically, the film will be released in 275 theatres beginning Friday, May 4.
The international debut of Marvel’s The Avengers got off to a record breaking start in IMAX theatres last weekend, significantly outperforming previous IMAX releases of Marvel films. More territories are launching in tandem with the North American release this week, including China. Domestic IMAX pre-sales are also strong and significantly ahead of any previous Marvel releases.
Distributed by The Walt Disney Studios, Marvel’s The Avengers: An IMAX 3D Experience marks the third Marvel Studios film presented in IMAX, following the releases of Iron Man 2: The IMAX Experience in 2010 and Thor: An IMAX 3D Experience in 2011.

Yes, 275 IMAX screens but not one of them film based
Does anyone here enjoy digital IMAX? Let’s take a poll.
I’ll probably watch it in that format even though it doesn’t hold a candle to the original 100 ft screens.
Well down here in the good old South (New Orleans to be exact), there is a AMC IMAX screen that is just a big as the touristy IMAX that shows all the nature IMAX films. And they just build one in another AMC location (haven’t been to that one yet), but I think they just converted their biggest theater into an IMAX.
PS PA2 looked hella good in IMAX. (Only saw it in IMAX because that was the only available showing on the night I went to see it.)
How about you shut up about your poll and watch the movie? Excellent idea, thank you.
Yes imax digital is fine. It’s still better than a regular screen.
Good point. Does IMAX even build true IMAX theaters anymore? Their brand – with all the smaller digital screens and how nearly every other tent like gets a run on it – is getting tired.
I think The Avengers has a decent chance of overtaking Avatar’s domestic record. I can see it remaining in the Top 5 until July. It’s gonna be a behemoth.
Nah. It won’t touch Avatar. It probably won’t even be the highest grosser of the summer. But yes, it will be a behemoth.
steven,
Man talking smack behind a computer screen. Take that away and what are you?
See what I did there?
Also, feel free to never comment on one of my posts ever again.
Sincerely,
Everyone else
One stinking week on IMAX before Tim Burton’s Dork Shadows (yeah that’s spelled right) which is tracking at $39 million and dropping comes in to hold the IMAX screens for 2 weeks.
Fucking bullshit. Not every Burton movie needs the IMAX treatment. Saw the trailer and there’s not a single IMAX worthy shot in this… what the hell is it anyway? A Quirky horror comedy?
At least Dark Knight should be playing several weeks.
One notable exception: Scotiabank Theatre’s IMAX screen in downtown Toronto, close to where IMAX is headquartered. This is due to a deal with Warner Bros. to screen their films in IMAX, including Dark Shadows next week. Instead, Wrath of the Titans will continue to play in the downtown core’s only true (and still operating) IMAX screen. Must have been a pretty sweet deal with Warner Bros.
